Mailed tot Uo 1 DECOLLETE DRESSES , Costumes Worn liy New Yort Laflies atEy.enin Gatherings , Where the Ijinc of Decency Should 1)O Drawn , Etc. New York WorM. The extremely docolloto dresses worn by many ladies at the opera , balls , and _ olsowhcro in society circles at evening gatherings this season have attracted Uni versal attention. While last year and the year preceding very dccolloto dresses were worn by some ladies , they were the exception , and not almost the universal rule , as is the case this year. The sub ject has formed a topic of conversation nt the clubs and elsewhere , and many and various have been the reasons assigned for the seemingly all prevalent fashion. The young married ladies are the most conspicuous in this matter of dress , or rather undress , and several who have oc cupied prominent boxes at the Metropol itan opera house during the season just closing , have attracted public.notico from ho unblushing display of natural , but generally concealed beauty. Last year low-nocked dresses used to bo hold in place by shoulder straps , but this year those have boon discarded , and to the observer the arm straps seem entirely in sulllciont and inadequate to hold the cor sngo , and there is a feeling of momentary expectation lest the entire bodice fall down. Several prominent society loaders were luostionod yesterday regarding the roa- Bens for this remarkable and indecent fashion and as to its probable results and tendencies. Owing to the fact that the fashion is BO universal and that their opinions would consequently reflect upon their associates and follows , they _ declined to give their names for publication. A middle-aged society and club man , who is well and widely known , and who is a regular attendant at the Dohnonico balls , said , when questioned on the sub ject : "Pshaw , the majority of dresses worn this year by society women nro not cut any lower than usual. Women _ with pretty necks and chcsta like to display thorn , and some a little moro immodest uncover themselves as much as they dare. My explanation of this whole outcry against docolloto dresses is that the boxes in the now opera house , where the fash ionable women ait , bring them nearer to and render them moro easily soon by that portion of the audience which , while it may understand a Elatbush sociable , ia not faraaliar with the balls and parties of our distinctively fashionable sot in UK metropolis , where those dresses rarely excite < cite any comment even among the mascu line BOX. " "An equally prominent society woman said : "It is a subject I do not much care to discuss , but the whole question roste on whether woman is modest or immod cst. The fashions change in this rospoci every few years , and a year after dressei have boon cut lower in Paris , they begin to cut them lower hero , but as to when a lady shall draw the lines rests with hnr self andhorown ideas andfeollings. Undo1 the directory , when high waiatod drossci were worn , the bosom , except in the casi of young girlswas often entirely exposed and I do not know that this period wat much moro immoral than this. Fo myself , 1 should never care to wear ; dress or allow my daughter to wear on which should excite the slightest suspi cion or thought of immodesty on our par in any observer's mind. Dresses , except , by members of Roman Catholic fumnlios , are cut quito as low in England as hero , and a certain American oooiety girl who married an English lord , and who has . - boon making quite a long visit hero recently - . contly , created quito a sensation by her low-cut drossex when she first returned * , homo last year. She may , to a certain - , extent , have started the fashion. " - - An old club man said : "Tho present fashion of low cut dresses is , I think , carried to an indecent and disgraceful extreme. 1 cannot but consider it de . moralizing to young men and girls to at tend our balls and mingle with and observe - servo women whoso charms are often - wholly uncovered. I know by personal experience when 1 have hoard young men in this club talk the day after a Del- nionico ball that the husbandH and tola- twos of BOIUO of the ladies they discuss could have no possible ground for reRouting - Routing their imputations did they hoar thorn. And yet 1 believe these ladies to bo pure , good women otherwise , and , in the majority of cases , excellent wives and mothers. They do not stop to think how greatly , in yielding to an indulgence in a foolish fashion , thuy aid in lowering the moral tone of the community. It seems to go from bad to worse every year , and 1 do not BOO whore it will atop unless wo boldly adopt the entire cus toms of the French directory. The dow agers are the worst , I think , and tlioro are two or three conspicuous examples who display their charms bedecked with diamonds nt opera , theatre , and ball , who ought , for the sake of public decen cy , to bo Bupprpssod. " A fashionable dressmaker was naked regarding the matter , and said : "Tho fashion is certainly this year for slightly lower cut dresses than usual , but it is larijoly an individual matter , after all. Some of our most ladylike and most do- muro-lookiiiK customers order the lower cut dresses , especially if they have handsome - some nocks , bosoms , and arms. The , general rule is , in the case of a debutante , to BO cut an evening dress as to just sug gest the contour ; for an older society Hi'rl wo allow the bosom to bo well do- lined , and for a matron or chaperone .thero is no particular or decided limit. How are the dresses supported , by moro arm straps ? Well , those are inado to fit BO tightly that the dress cannot slip , for if they should happen to break well , disastrous consequences might follow. The whole matter , after all , is a good teat as to whether a lady ia modest or im modest , but I do not wonder that some . of the dresses this year have raised an outcry. " 4 Iallc ( ! TJ1H GIiASBWAUK CUA'/.K General Appointment of n Vnshlon- rtblo TableOliaiiKoa ot CiiNlom , There never was a time in the history of polite society when cold water waa drank so freely or with such evident rel ish as nt tlio present day , from the sim ple fnct th.it the tumblers , jugs , trays , coolers , and tureens are so lovely that ono drinks for moro pleasure of handling the precious glassware. "Your water-service is so elegant , pro fessor , that the very sight of it scotns to increase my thirst nnd capacity for the harmless neotar , " wan the way in which a charming society belle passed compliment on the thin tumblers and charming little water jugs which a cultured host ot this city had purchased at considerable ox- pcnso in the city of Lyons n year or so ago. Notwithstanding there was n great deal of verbosity about the lady's re marks , the writer fools justified in believ ing that the pleasant things she said were heartfelt , for the crystal was exquisite , and ono might bo tempted lo consume a whole gallon of water for the sajto of enjoying the prismatic effect produced every time the jug was handled. It was a swell dinner , mndo up of a dozen people , but tlio little group represented art , music , philanthropy , literature , law. philosophy , journalism , religion , and society , nnd , ns everybody was doing his prettiest , the glassware could not bo handled any moro than necessity called for. The tumblers were low , engraved with exquisite figures of water nymphs and dolphinettes , nnd the glass was so very thiu ns to bo scarcely perceptible between the lips , while the pressure ol n finger would have crushed it to pieces. It would bo difficult to duplicate them in this country for less thnn § 00 a dozen. No wonder tint Lake Michigan should taste from , r gan good sipped n $ glass. The water bottles were individuate , demijohn in shape , and mounted on cir cular mats of beveled mirror. They were heavy and hand-cut , the design being a star-hobnail , as the people in trade say. It is the choicest pattern used very rare , reflecting nil the colors of the rainbow , nnd , although holding but little moro thnn three glasses of water , they are worth $20 apiece. As there was n bottle for each plato , besides the platters on which they were mounted and the single gloss for the first course , the service couh not have cost less than $324. Who wouldn't bo temperate with such facilities for the proper appreciation of cold water Water poured from n § 20 hand-cut owe : or gulped out of a common tin dipper an entirely two diliorent drinks. This is decidedly n cut-glass Bcasonanc though "rare bits of china , like old win or point lace , are never passe , silverware however costly and sterling , has iiot the ghost of n show on the table or sidoboan of the day. So thorp is nothing to dc but put the big , swinging water pitcher with a goblet and tray , in a flannel bag and relegate it to the dust and cobweb of the darkest corner of the top shelf i : the pantry. The sacrifice is a cruel on to moro than nfonr proud little house wives , but fashion says , "everything , ail vor and all things high , must go , " am her dictates nro invincible , The result i n gorgeous array of plain , cut , carved and engraved crystal , glass-wnro in a the colors of chromatics , unheard of d signs in plain and decorated china , an never to bo seen a dish , vase , cruotbow ! basket , tureen , or standard over cigh inches in height. Everything , from a butter patty to an epergne , is in Hat re lief , though the endless variety in color and design precludes the possibility of monotony. While the general appointment of a fashionable table is said to bo low , ex ception is made to water-bottles , pots , jugs , and jars , but all are BO artistically and gracefully constructed as to make amends for their deviation from the low rulo. rulo.In In the various specimen ! ) of American water-bottles the Russian cutting is the most admired , nnd it goes without say ing that any little jug having the capaci ty of ono quart of water or wino must bo a thing of beauty and a joy forever to command § -0 ! , For § 10 may bp bought n beauty , cut in deep foils , with stars concentric , so heavy nnd durable that it can bo knocked round with impunity. Block-diamond cut designs cost $7 , and strawberry pat terns , in vase shape sell for $9. There are some water-bottles with tall , pitcher- lipped neck , which are made in Con necticut , and are made from § 5 to $8 each , while little broad-chested bottles , decorated with fine border patterns done in etching are exceedingly pretty , mid certainly worth $ ! i. The ulaws , however , is very line , nnd will not endure harsh treatment. Another bottle , Egyptian in shnpo , had n substantial handle , rose lip , slender neck , and a wreath made of graceful clusters of lillies of the valley encircled the body , "Two dollars and twenty-five cents , nnd dirt cheap , " said thn heretofore listless clerk. There are many tall , slender pitchers similar to the earther jugs in which Kng- liah ales are put up. Some nro from ton to fifteen 'inches high , cylindrical in shape , nnd not moro than four inches in diameter. They are elegantly cut and mounted on n tray similar in pattern , or made of French plate glass. A couple era a single glass completes the set. In crackle ware or imported glass of high colors ono can squander a email for tune , and not any moro than furnish a small table with necessary articles. While there is a great demand for bottles tles , ono or two being suOicient for n table , the latest fancy consists in having n small bottle for each cover. It is dilll- cult to buy thorn in crystal , nnd the Bohemian , Hungarian , and French wares nro so very high that many ladies prefer to purchase the vinegar bottles in blue , green , rod , amber , und opal crackle for 76 cents or $1.25 apiece , and simply remove - move the stoppers. t There are , however , many bottles to bo had as low aa 70 cents , which answer every purpose for a family of simple tastes. They are handy , durable , aud strong , and , if crushed ice ia not used in the tumblers , it will bo found a conven ience to freeze a little water about half a pint in the bottom before sending the bottle to tablo. The operation , however , requires judgment , lost the bottle crack with the frost. Experiments should be made Cr t with a pop-bnttlo. A well dressed man could have been loitering about the ollices of the Illinois Loan and Trust company yesterday morn ing about 10 o'clock. He smoked a cigar leisurely , and outwardly waa unmoved , but clotio attention revealed the fact that ho kept a sharp lookout on the action ol the paying teller. Ho , too , had an air of delusive composure about him. Bui beneath hia cloth liu kept a sharp watcl on the m.ui , who in turn was watching the paying teller. This atato of afl'iira existed for about three quarters of an hour. At exactly fifteen minutes before 11 o'clock the pay ing teller returned from the vaults bear ing what appeared to be a huge package of money. 11 o placed it on the counter before him and carelessly turned back to ward the vault ? . Cultivating ilia Orchard , In speaking of the cultivation of the orchard a correspondent in The Practical Farmer saya : "If fruit treca after they have attained a size sufficiently largo foi bearing fruit can bo made to do aa wcl in grass as when cultivated , it ia obvioui that it will bo much less expense to sect to graaa and aavo the coat of cultivation. But that would not bo all the advantage obtained. It is well known that cultivn tion ia likely to injure many of the largo roota of the treea. Thia ia the greates objection to cultivating among large treca. It is desirable that the roota ahouk ppnotrato the soil near the surface in al directions , since the surface soil ia the richest ; but if cultivation ia practiced the roota which approach the surface ara continually torn and injured and kepi from approaching the surface. If tlio soi is cultivated among largo trees , the culti vation ahouiU bo very shallow , so aa to injure the roota aa little aa possible , By fruquent topdreeeing with fertilizers it ia believed that the treca wil' do equally aa well in grass aa whei cultivated. Pasturing sheep or pigi in the orchard ia a good inethoi of disposing of what grava grows and enriching the aoil. Tlio jiiga and sheep will also oat the frui which falls prematurely , and they destroy stroy the larvm of the codling moth con tained in it. If , howavor , the grass ia allowed to grow , it ia boat to cut it tw < or thrco times during the summer , ant let it remain pa the ground to mulch one enrich the aoil. In regard to whether to cultivate an orchard or not , it may bi said that if treea are young , they should bo cultivated to promote their growth hut if the trees are large , they need not bo cultivated , but may be seeded teL L ra a and'top-dressed.
