tures of the Jay were a decline in West Shore
from 55 to 03 , and an advance. In K.inias it

05@65j , the latter at 83. TrmiactUms In
WestShoro fives raachod the enormous total
of 1,472,000 shares.
Stocks At the opening of the stock mnrket
a uliarp dri\ was made against Union Pacific ,
St. Paul and Lake Shore on the nnnounc-
rnont that Commissioner Kiuk had ordered
the trunk lines to rodttoo rates ton cents per
hundred on the various classes of freight , and
on advices from the west th-vt the Chicago ,
Burlington k Quincy and allied roads had
boon unable to come to terms. St. Paul de
clined 13 to 02J , Union Pacific 1J to 721 , ixnd
Lake Shore 1J to 93J. The weakness was of
abort duration , and before 11 o'clock the mar
ket became strong and remained BO during
the rest of the day , at times being buoyant.
Loading operators were free buyers. After
midday there was quite a boom on reports
from the west that the Chicago , Burlington &
Quincy had decided to pee 1 competitive busi
ness after the 17th inst. This was followed
by a fractional reaction , b ut near the close
the market moved up rapidly. Missouri Pa
cific sold np to 01 , Western Union to 70J ,
Northwestern at 1183 , and Northern Pacific ,
preferred , at 50J. There wore largo purchasers
of stocks throughout the day , and operators
displayed greater confidence than for months
past. AH compared with last night's close
prices are V to 3 per cent , higher , and the ma
jority of stocks show an advance of 1@I J.
