MINOR MENTION , Addition * ! local-on seventh pago. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnoll'a. The Usscuo'a annual ball Is on the 7th instant. The Baptist ladies give a social this evening at the residence of Mrs. Barnard , 728 Mynstor street. J. M. Matthews will next step into the office of county superintendent of schools and Mr. J. K. Cooper retires. A horse attached to McAteo & Fox's now delivery wagon took a runaway dash i < yesterday and smashed the wagon some , The Mill school house was broken into during vacation by some nnschovious fellows who turned things upside down and scattered them about. Congressman Pusoy writes that the prospect is good for getting the add ! lional $100,000 appropriation for the now government building hero. 8. W. Ferguson & Co. are putting up an oflico next door south of "THE Run office , on Pearl street , and will move from Shug art's block in a few < laye. Sheriff Guittar loft again last evening with a quartette of convicts for Fort Madison. They were Young Lloyd , Pat Murphy , 0. J. Smith and Frodllhlon. It is pro tty evident that some of the sneak thieves who are fooling about are simply anxious to bo caught , so OR to have warm corners in jail until the severe - vero weather lots up. . The how board of county supervisors moot next Monday , at which time the now members , Mr. Graham and Mr. lliflhton , take their seats , and Messrs , Phillips and Clayton take their seats. James Connolly , C. Struts and J. W. Sankoy were chronicled yesterday as among these who didn't swear off. Their Now Year's celebration cost thorn at least § 7.00 each for the police court fund. G. W. Moore , who was arrested for stealing an overcoat from the Oroston house , was yesterday bonnd over to await the action of the grand jury , and in de fault of the needed bond was sent down to jail. Jack Cusick has boon awarded the cap offered to the most popular police officer , and decided by vote at the Catholic fair. Mr. Peter Bochtolo received tlio gold headed cane as the most popular hotel man. Yesterday afternoon Ror. Mr. Thomas T. McClure , of Pierce , Nob. , was mar ricd to Miss Ida A. Tucker , of Martins villo , Ind. , the ceremony being perform ed at the Revere house by Rev. J. G , Lemon. Charles Groonwalt was before Justice Vaughah yesterday on charge of ob taining an overcoat under falao pretenses - tenses , from Mrs. Almy , the second hand dealer , on Broadway. Ho had his case continued. * The Knights of Pythias are preparing for a grand masquerade on the evening of the Oth , and elaborate preparations are being made to rnako the affair a more than ordinary event. It is to bo hold in Bloom & Nixon'shall. There are now thirteen candidates named for the city manhalship , and pea sibly there are some dark horses still in their stalls. The oflico of city marshal must bo looked on as either very lucra tive , or ulso much easier to capture than the others. Tickets for the piano recital of Miss Really Slovens are to bo placed on sale at Bushnoll & Brackott's to-day. The recital is to bo nort Tuesday evening , and tlioao who desire good seats should i make their choice early , as there will bo a largo attendance. The city o ouncil was to have hold u special meeting last night , but the alder men changed their minds and concluded to meet to-night instead. The purpose of the gathering is to got matters in bet- tfit shape for securing the needed logis- .Lition for the issuing of improvement bonds. Captain Hayes , of the police force , who Arrested young Cannon , under the belief that ho was the missing Fox , of Jersey City , went over to Omaha to see some of Cannon's relatives and friends , to whom Uie young man referred him for particu- Ian of his career. Ho was unable to find any such folk * living at the numbers given , and now Hayes thinks the young man waa guying him. At the coming mooting of the board of supervisors some action will probably be taken in regard to submitting the question ' tion of'a new county jail , a long felt need. It is understood that the east end of the county will vote for such a build ing provided the west cud citizens favor the holding of terms of court in Avoca to accommodate the east end. With this sort of a compromise it is probable that a new jail mny be gained hero. The case of Harry Eisenhower , the Danison clerk who got away with a largo amount * of his employers' money , and who aerrod one term in jail hero , lias created much interest here , Since his release ho has been rearrested on a second end count , but has now boon released on a technicality , the court deciding that ho ought to hare been charged with embez zlement instead of larceny. Now ho is to be freshly prosecuted , and it seems the determination of the prosecution , to push him to the wall , or inside the walls. The city building , instead of being provided with a vault largo enough to hold the papers andjbooka needed to be prwrrad , hu two wtfeo , and the vault at the old building contain * what cannot to jtori | time , When the old building is sold , as it will be , then wht 1 A vault will needs bo built nt the nor ? build Ing. The money which has lieun spent [ or the two Bftfcs would have paid for a lf > rgo enough vault to keep the papers and books in , and done nwav with the need of any safe , unless possibly a small one. There is nn excellent litilo oflico in the now city building far the woighmastor , n sot of scales and other needfuls for the office. Capt. Williams , who was elected to that oflico nearly two years ago , how ever , still noglocta filing i' , and retains his position in the postoflico. Ho claims that the city council stripped the oflico of all profit by licensing other scales , and by refusing to provide him with a decent sot of scales , trying to force him to hang his own. The oftico is , there fore , practically abolished for the pres ent , and empty is the room assigned for the captain. Some wonder has boon expressed about some of Vie hydrants being frozen , it being ing supposed that they wcro so construe od that they could not freeze. The hy drants are so constructed Hint no water comes up into them except when being used , and when thny are turned off , the water loft in the hydrant runs off through a am ill hole , thus draining it , so that there is no water left above ground to frooao , In putting in the hydrantahow ever , some dirt got into these holes , so in first using , some of those have stopped up so that the first rush of the water did not clear them entirely. This is ono of the annoyances in Sterling waterworks in extremely coldwoathorbut when clear ed thq trouble will not. return. Mayor Bowman's ' newspaper , in giving a summary of the local events of the old year gives prominence to the fact that in April last "Chief Field issued his proclamation warning suspicious indi viduals to leave the city. " [ lad it stated that Mayor Bowman himself made such a proclamation and that it never was put in force , it would bo near the truth. There are several other interesting little items , such as the allowance of $200 a year to the mayor for oflico rent , etc. , which Uiould have gone into the record. It shows that on May 3 the council or dered the marshal to close the gambling houses , a fact which seems to have boon forgotten by the officials. It gives the date of every democratic caucus , speech , and convention , but omits to note a re publican event , however important. A very impartial showing of the year indeed. Mrs. M. Carroll , fashionable dressmaking making , cutting and fitting a special ty Apprentices wanted. No. 720 First avenue , up stairs. Some of ( ho Other Sldo of tlio Dirt , Filling Quotation. , jTho filling up of streets to grade , and tlio assessment of the cost to abutting property instead of paying for it out of the general fund continues to excite dis cussion. THE Bui : has given pretty fully the opinions of property otvnors and their objections. Ono of the aldermen yester day broke out wiih the information , "Why , you talk about the property owners - ors being assessed for this work , do you know that as it is the city pays for almost a quarter of all the filling out of the gen eral fund ? The city has to pay for the intersections of the streets. Now on a block of 300 foot , the city has to pay for filling the street , which is 00 foot wide , so that makes about n quarter of all , and some of the blocks the other way are only about 200 foot , and the city pays for the filling of the street intersection and the intersection of the alloy way ) " Another ono of the oillcials clariod , "Why now , that the fills are made , and folks BOO what an improvement it is , there is not half the kicking , that there was. It increases the value of tjio property so much too , I think it is safe to say that for every dollar spent in filling , the value of the property is increased $ 'J. 1 had ono man toll mo that while it would cost him about $200 his property was worth $1,000 more than it was boforo. There isn't near the kicking there was , and it will soon bo all right , just as soon as folks got used to this way of doing.1' Ono of the city olliciala insisted. "This is just the way they are doing in Omaha , DCS Moinoa , Kookulc , Burlington and other cities. In all these placoa the abutting property pays for the street filling. The trouble is Council Blulls ho.i never had any regular system of street improvements boforo. Wo have boon dumping a load of dirt hero , and filling a hole there , and not making any headway. The law won't allow of a tax for n general fund largo enough to do this work and pay for it out of that fund. Why , wo can't raise moro than $35,000 for a general fund , and that wouldn't pay the expense of running the city govornmunt , say nothing of improvements. It is the only way it can bo done. " Such is some of the talk given to offset the many complaints made about the present way of carrying on city improve ments. Airs. A. Bryan , dressmaker. Gutting a specialty. fiOl 8. Sonio of the Evil-Doers who Ilnvo Itccti BnthcrltiK Good Tlicro. The Bulletin , of Donison , suma up the criminal doings of the week in that county M follows : Charles Smith , n young man of eigh teen summers , was brought lieforo D. L. Boynton , Esq. , last Friday on n charge of larceny. Smith is a Chicago product , recently brought to this county by Mr. John Nowcom. Ho entered the employ of Mr. George Nowcoin , near Doloit , but n few days since skipped out with n re volver , which ho stele from ft neighbor ; also an old cap , and , it is alleged , four or five dollars incash. Ho was found at Mr. Woolston's , south of town , where ho had drifted in search of work. Smith is an innocent-appearing boy , and his can did confession to Mr. Boynton awakened considerable sympathy. Ho acknowl edged having taken the revolver and cap , but denied stealing the money. The re volver was practically valueless , and the cap worth about half that amount. The parties who caused his arrest failed to appear against him , and ho was dis charged from custody. Harry Eisenhower waa released onja technicality. Mayor _ Wright , before whom the case was tried , held that the prisoner could not. bo convicted of the al leged olfonso under the statute upon which the information was based. Under that statute tho. allegation should have been embezzlement , instead of larceny. Eisenhower has been ro-arrcstcd - on an other charge of larceny , the information being filed before P. J. King , Esq. , of West Side township. Harry is having a good time , and evidently hopes to shako hands with the goddess of liberty as soon as a thick-headed public learn that some mon have a right to steal from their em ployers. Wo learn that there is a base conspiracy on foot , to bo sprung on this man as soon as the prosecutions are end ed. It is rumored that ho is to bo sen tenced for life to edit The Bilks Boomer ang. ang.Andy Bowling was arrested Friday on the charge of obtaining money under falsa pretenses , It is alleged that ha purloined ice bills from Mr. B. F. Leshor and collected them. The charge was brought by Mr. George Bond , from whom a bill had boon collected in this manner. Bowling is suspected of other delin quencies. Ho waived examination and was bound over to the district court by D. L. Boynton , Esq. , bail being fixed at $100. Ton citizens clubbed together and signed his bonds. .Friday a pair of now mittens was taken from Mr. Arnold , the liveryman. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the party taking them , when it' was learned that bo had committed the oll'enso while intoxicated , and not with a view to steal ing. Ho paid the expenses incidental to the recovery of the pioporty , amounting to about § 15.00 , and there the matter ended. The Carson Dramatic company played the "Miser's Daughter" Friday and Sat urday night to crowded houses. The characters were well taken , and nearly all of the company did wonderfully well.
