A Litter RecciYGu liy the Governor of Missouri in 1859 , Gl\liiK IiiRirnmtlon of the Where- nljouts and Doings or .John Sr. t/ouli ncputillcin. The following is a copy of an original loiter from lown in March , 1859dircctod to the governor of Missouri , notifying "his honor" of the exact whoronbouU of the famous frco soiIorCapt. John Brown. It was Bunposcd by the writer that tharc was n dcMro on the part of the author ! . tic of Missouri and Kansas to capture and bring to justice ) the disturber of the pcaco on the border of the two stntcif at that titno. The letter was directed tc the governor ( Stewart ) under cover to the St. Louis postmaster ( John llogan ] to "ovadp suspicion" as to who gave the information. To understand the importance tanco of the information convoyed by the letter it must bo recollected that Vrown'i last performance in Kansaa occurred or December 19 , 1858. An escaped n'avc reported to Brown that his family hac been sold and uroro across the border ir Missouri on the way to Texas. Browr immediately started with twenty men divided into two parties , crossed ovoi into Missouri nnd liberated the slaves whom , with six other negroes , nmkitif eleven in all , ho convoyed into Kansas In this enterprise one of the owners o the slaves was killed and great excitement mont followed. A large reward was of fcrcd for Brown's arrnst. The moro moderate orate frco statesmen disavowed all sym pathy for the net , and Brown started will his negroes and family for Iowa. Ho wa pursued by forty-two man. Ho made i stand , after providing for the safety o his family in a log house. The pursuer lied with the exception of four men , win wore taken prisoner by Brown. It is this party which is referred to ii the letter. As the event turned out , 'thi writer of the letter should have notifioc Oov Wise , of Virginia , as , in about tci months afterward , Brown's body "wa mouldering in the gravo" at _ Ohailoston in that state Brown , while in Jpwn wan preparing for his raid into Virginia In the previous May ho hold a convention tion at Chatham , Canada , the proceed ings of which wore kept secret , A provisional constitution was adopted under which Brown jms chosen com mandor-in-chief ; J. H."agy ( nlludod ti in the letter ) was named secretary o war ; Owen Brown , his son , treasurer and Richard Rcalf , the popt , who died ; f ow years ago in San Francisco , was mad secretary of ntato , The presidency o this now republic v < as temporarily con forced on Elder Monroe , a colored clor gyman. Brown's purpose , it is now be Moved , won nothing loss than to attac ] slavery inits [ oldest scats , and by aid of th liberated slaves to overturn slaver ; throughout the union. The letter , o which the above is but introductory roads as follows : * IOWA , March 4 , 1859. l'o Your Excellency , Goicrnor of Missouri : I take the liberty of addressing you t inform you of the whoroabouta of the nc toripiu John Brown , who has boon mm daring and plundering in ono'of the boi dor counties of your state. I consido it my duty aa a citizen of law und ordo to inform you of any facts relating t the case which has como under my ol sorvation , having just learned through man in whom I have the most implici confidence that the said Brown has o the 20th of February , 1859 , arrived an taken up his quarters in Cedar count } Iowa , in the part of Cedar county lyin duo east of Iowa City fifteen miles , an twonty-two miles northwest of Musci tine , and oijjht miles duo north of Lil orty , which is on the Davenport & low City railroad , Said Brown has with him five or six < his men. One of them is the Knnui correspondent of The Now York Tribune His name is Kagy. Ho is about fiv foot ton inches high , dark hair , vor heavy board and does not ahavo. H : countenance denotes guilt. They hav also eleven negroes , of which a part ai females ; also mules , horses and wagoni all of which their friends where the now are say they have stolen from tli man they murdorud , of which they boat publicly. This is { ho third winter tin they have made this point their hoai quarters and drilling their mou for bus iioas in which they have boon employe in Missouri and Kansas. Their quartei ' hero is in a quaker settlement , and froi the best information that I can got the are not so friendly now towards Brown conduct as formerly. They don't objo < to stealing negroes and running them ol but when it comes to stealing any othc property and taking men's lives , the object. This is the view of a portion < thorn , while the other porrion of thoi endorsed anything and everything tin Brown thinks best to do in a slave stati Brown and hii mou expect to remai hero until the weather becomes 11101 settled , and sell their property , whic they wish to soil , for cislu They see to feel nuito secure where they are , an will probably remain there until they ai well rested. There is property in tin neighborhood that said Brown sold la winter or spring. I could send you dp ; ositions of responsible men confirm ! ! the account I'vo ' given you , but I thin it best not to make it public , as voi nearly all our friends are republicans , o properly speaking , abolitionists. I wil if desired , give by letter , or in porso any information I can with propnotyai will spare no pains to learn ovcrytliii in regard to their movements , of will io 1 expect to bo postod. " "When did the fur renting business bo1 gin ? " "Well , it is difficult to say. You sot businosi of all kinds has boon undergoing a demoralizing change for sotno yean past. Merchants stoop to thiiifp nov that they would not think of doing tor years ago. Everything is conducted or the sham principle. For instance , r clothing merchant invites you into hit store and , after selling you a now suit perhaps at a small profit , ho puts a stem winding watch in your vest pocket ant charges you nothing for it. Then then are ether merchants \rho otTer the publit as an inducement to deal with them neat ly bouhd volumes of poetry or fiction Others give chinawarc ; others articles o : kitchen furniture , and I wouldn't bo sur prised if the time should como when thi average merchant will throw in Unitoc States 4 per cents or quarter spctiom of .improved farm lands with t pound of tea or 10 yards of calico. Sham why this is by all odds , the shannost ago if I may coin the word , that the work ever passed through. Go to a rocoptiot and half the dresses and jewelry worn bj the ladies is rented fur the occasion Some of our loading tailors do a big bus ! ness in the renting of full dress-suits t ( gentlemen at rates running all the wa ] from $5 to $15 a night. " "Do you over lose thorn I "Yes ; but not often. Sometimes w lose track of them for awhile , but the usually turn up all right. " "Isn't it cheaper'in the long run t rent than to buy ? " "Yes , really it is. Ladies are apt t become tired of a sealskin sacquo aftc two seasons. They have only oxpondo $100 or so , whereas if they had bough tlio sacquo in the first place they woul have boon compelled to pay out froi $200 to § 500 , and porlmpa have gen without a sacquo altogether. Annual Convention of the Northwestern Association. The eighteenth annual mooting of the Northwestern Dairymen's association will bo hold in the city of Mankato , Min nesota , commencing Tuesday , February 12th , 1884 , and continuing with three sessions a day ; , closing Friday the ICth. The splendid success of the mooting of last year , which was hold at Mankato , induced the executive committee to select the same locality for the mooting of 1884 Every indication warrants the conclusion that the coming convention will provo the grandest success in the history of the association. A full array of the best dairy talent of the entire northwest will bo present. The meetings of the association have always been characterized by a largo and frco discussion of topics calculated to in struct and profit the individual dairyman and it is is especially desired that as many of this class us possible make an effort tc bo present at this mooting. Mankato is easily reached by three im portant railroads , the Chicago & North western , the Chicago , Minneapolis A Omaha , and the Chicago , Milwaukee A St. Paul. Reduced rates of faro will be accorded to all members of the association who attend the convention. Manufacturers and dealers in dairy and stock implements , are invited to bo pre sent and exhibit the same , for which purpose a convenient room will bo pro vided. Dairymen are invited to bring samples of their butter and cheese fet exhibition. The purpose is , both in the airango- mont of the programme and in the con duct of the discussions , to make of the coming convention an imstituto for studj and instruction , which no intelligent and progressive farmer can allbrd t < miss. , For further particulars address thi undersigned.W. . Ono is that a woman fours guilty of adultery shall bo stoned I death. Thia barbaric code was actual ! enforced about two yean ago near Pyn mid Lake , Nevada , to the iufmil horror of the whites , who mac Inn ellbrt to secure the minis ! mont of the murderers , but without success. Another tribal LIT partakes more of tlio character of grim homer. A modioino man who loses three iwtfents consecutively thereby gives proof of his incompetence , and must suffer death. This penalty has just been inflicted on M.v8ho-gotho Piuto chief medicine man , at Buffalo Meadows , Nevada , Four or tire bullets wore shot into him , and the curiosity of the whites was met by the that committed snide statement Ma-slio-go de by eating wild parsnip. Thcro is food for reflection in this in duce of barbaric justice which can bo igestcd with profit in the confines of ivilizntion. . Thcro is a lesson conveyed i it that our medical colleges may well onsidcr. If such n rule could bo cstab- shcd and enforced in civilized lifo , with hat care would the expensive prcacrip. .on bo written and compounded.
