This is especially true of the solid pub- io improvements which aggregate over .hroo quarters of a million , The rapid growth of Omaha is evi denced by the great number of dwelling louses which wcro erected during the year , while the number of now business docks and factories attests the most gratifying commercial prosperity and ndustriftl development. The attomp } f interviewers to obtain any detailed formation from the vari ous magnates roved very unsatisfactory. The mngnntos were as closo-mouthod na oyster. AV all that could bo "olTi- cially" loarnc was that the mooting had boon Tory hrmonioua throughout , nnd that the ncr pool had boon thor oughly orgaij'od aa originally planned ; also that jlio result of the final mooting in Cficago promises to bo satis factory to nllpartics concerned. The Ghirtto , Burlington & Quincy was not ropifeontod in the Omaha moot ing , nnd til inforpnco ia that the ad journment \l \ Chicago is for the purpose of giving thft road ono moro opportunity of coming iwo the pool before the papers are finally /'signed / , scaled and doliv orod. " It H a generally admitted fact , however , tjat the Chicago , Burlington & Quincy ppposos to act independently of the now fool , and fight it out on that line ifit / takes nil winter nnd n part /of / next summer. The "Q. fop claim that they cannot afford to live aovcn-oightha of its Ne braska msiness in exchange for one- eighth of the pool business. They say that BO fir as they nro concerned they can mairtain their rates , or , if necessary , can cut f the pool cuta , but the proba bility iathat the only competition will not bo h much in rates as in the fight for buuness at regular rates. Neither party inn afford to enter into irate war , The Cucago , Burlington & Quincy pre fers Ulnae its portion of the Union Pa cific cmsignmonts rather than give up ita ova trafllc. Tlu now pool can hardly bo called a tripa/tito / , for , in addition to the original partis the Union Pacific , the Chicago & lock Inland , and the Chicago , Mil- waiKoe & St. Paul it now includes- the Chi'ago ' & Northwestern and its con- notions , the Sioux City & Pacific , and iho Chicago , Minneapolis & St. Paul , nlfi the \Vabaah and Missouri Pacific rofls. It is undoubtedly a combination nliin favor of the Union Pacific nnd the C/icago / , Burlington & Quincy having aiirect line from Chicago to Ogdcn , canceling there with the Central Pacific , [ > id thereby having as much a through Ino to San Francisco as any other trans- antinontal road is naturally a > rival of no Union PaciGc , and cannot enter the tool upon the terms offered. The result t that the now combination is all against ho Chicago , Burliugton & Quincy. / Mr , E. P. Vining , the general traflic fnanagor of Union Pacific , has boon igroed upon as the commissioner of' the now pool , which is Io bo called' tlio Western Trunk Line association. His term of oillco is to bo six ycors , and his salary $15,000 n year. Ho will enter upon his duties on January 1st , and Mr. P , P. Shelby , the general freight a"ont of the Union Pacific , will very likely become tho- general traflio manager of that road. The probability is that Ji A' . Munroc , . the assistant general freight agent of th.6 Union Pacific , will be pro moted' ' to general freight agont. No moro capable man could bo selected for the placo. The. change necessarily will promote several wen , who will receive a vorjr acceptable Now Year's gift. Mr. Vining will probably continue to make his headquarters in Omaha. The new deal vfill cause a considerable change in thrJmaanorofhandling'lU8iness. Hortuftor freight will bu billed through from Chicago to Salt Lake , without breaking bull : . Thin will ii'duco the freight handling forcn at the Union la- cifie transfer to-a more handful of men. In fact , this lias already boon done. Within a. few days past the number of ganga have been cut down from fifteen to two > 'I'liia will prove a big oaving to the railroads , but it throws out 06 em- ploymeifl a largo number of men and knocks tlio stuffing out of the contractors who hayo been doing the froiRhthandling. It is claimed that the Weatorn.Trunk Line association has agreed not to make a rate from. Chicago to points- beyond Omaha that will bo less than the rate be tween ChicAgo and Omaha , and ) if this agreement ia observed it will in n groal measure bo a protection to our mor * chants. Theio are various rumors to the oflbol that the oaolorn trains will run , into this city at no distant day , but this is guoes. v.'ork. The probability is thaJ there will bo some changes-in the loco ! ticket o dices. A well-informed cfllcial nays : Burlington will bo a most formidable ponont , and , west of the river , is able to injure the Union Pacific far moro than the combinations east of the rivsr1 a&r hurt the Burlington between Chicago ant Omaha. It is very apparent that the Burlington's welfare lies m remaining in dependent of the alliance. As an inde pendent factor , it will goi all of the Denver vor and Rio Grande business at Denver , which is corUinly preferable to one-fifth of the Union Pacific at Omaha. It will not bo obliged to divide any of its. exten sive traflio m Nebraska and the woat with tlio Hock Island & St. Paul , and the ocal business of the Burlington and Mis souri River division is undoubtedly leavlor than that of the Union Pacific , [ tunning south of the Union Pacific tin : orritory is more- densely populated urn ; > reductive of patronngn. The loss tha ivould result from a pooling of this bus ! ness would bo far greater than oven i reasonably lengthy war would entail , and [ can not see how the Burlington cast : omo into the nlli&nco if such action would compel a pooling of its western juainoas.
