Cook has removed his resi dence from North Main street to No. 029 First avenue , in Dr. Lawrence's brick block. block. What What has become of that resolution passed by the city council last summer , ordering the city marshal to close nil gambling houses ? The Noola papers speak highly of the lecture recently given there by Rov. J. 'A. Armstrong , of this city , on "Grit , Grace and Greenbacks. " On Tuesday evening of next week Miss Noally Stevens is to give her piano recital , in response to the request of her many friends and admirers hero. * The Emerson Chronicle says that the three Christmas trees in that place bore ever 82,000 worth of presents , and curt ly inquires , "how is that for soft corn ? " Sheriff Guiltar toft last evening for Port Madison , taking a quartette of the prisoners recently sentenced. They were ivosson , Farnsworth , J. D. Smith and'J. M _ .Smith. At St. Paul's church last evening the Sunday school children sang their Christ mas carols , nnd ( In appropriate | sermon was given by the rector , Rov. T. J. Mac key. "Intentional manslaughter , " is the gentler way in which The Tabor Union terms 'tho charge , against Dr. Cross. "Malicious murder , " is the way the grand jury put it. Sneak thieves entered G. A. Robin- eon's house Saturday night while the 11 * family were at supper , and got away with two overcoats , ono belonging to Robert Porcival the ether to Mr. Fergu son. Deputy Shorifl Olattorbuck Saturday evening , brought in from Crescent City a young man named Finloy , and lodged him in jail , on the charge of malicious mischief in kicking in the door of a sal oon. Yqung Floyd , who was convicted and Bontoncod 'for ' forging Mr. Davidson's name to a chock , says there was an older head which put up the job , and that ho was only the tool. Ho lias not fully made up his mind whether to squeal or not , as it is a little late now to do so. Chailes Cannon , who vras arrested hero Friday , on suspicion of being ono James Fox , wanted in Jersey City for abscond ing with express packages of money , is still being hold hero , awaiting the arrival of ono of Pinkorton's men from Chicago. There seems to bo much doubt as to Cannon being the man wanted , and ho threatens to make it interesting for those who arrested him , after ho is released. ' Mrs. Laura G. Fixon , after giving an address at the , Methodist church in Omaha yesterday morning , came hero nnd spoke in the Congregational church yesterday afternoon , on temperance. She is prominent in the W. 0. T. U. , nnd us a public speaker haa few equals , there being a vein of quaintness ant sparkling freshness in her addresses , which makes them peculiarly enjoyable , W. V. Wirth , proprietor of the Bos ton tea store , was on Saturday evening happily surprised and pleasingly re minded of it being his fortieth birth day. A. M. Wood , in behalf of himsol and his follow employes , 0. H. Coleman 0. J. Morgan and John Mulquocn , stop pcd to the front and with n few miscellaneous neous words presented Mr. Wirth vritl an elegant gold-headed cane. The re . cipicnt responded as well as a man could under such circumstances , ant y ailed all ovor. Prof G , L , Farnham , who lately lof the superintendoncy of the public school hero to accept the principahhip of th Nebraska State Normal school , remora bers THE Bin : with a copy of the las catalogue. It shows that there hav been 330 students in attendance during tho.year , Of these fourteen graduatot from ( ho advancco and iifty from the ele mentary course , Of the number in at tendance during the year 217 are ladie and 122 gentlemen. The many friend hero of Prof. Panuworth will bo gltu to learn that the institution it prosporin in iU ways. Clifford Hough , who was arrested a Crescent City on a charge of stealing hi room mate's clothes from Kate Ilur jort's house , has been committed to jail to await the action of the next grand jury , bonds being fixed at $500. Hough s also suspected of having boon con cerned in the burglary of the postolllco and Swanaon's store at Crescent City , and it is hinted that there are other crooked transactions which ho will bo called on to explain. It is said that ho threatens to squeal on his chum , from whom lie took the clothes , claiming that , hey had boon turning several confidence games hero , and that his partner getting iho most of the plunder , leaving him n little short , ho took the clothoa. Go to llurlburt s fancy steam dyeing and French dry cleaning works at 34 Pearl street. GEUNTS AND GBUMBLES , WluitSnmo oftlio Tnt-1'nyorn Ilnvo to Sny nbout Street Filling. "Why don't you shako up this strcol illing business ? " queried ono of the readers ors of THE BIP. : , with indignation Hash ng from his oyo. " It's a blamodjahamo. That's what it is. Iloro I am just getting my little house paid for , and I have boon laying taxes right along to help pay for illing up and fixing Broadway and Main streets , and other streets whore the rich 'oiks , who can afford to pay , own proper- orty. Now that they have got their places all fixed up they turn around and want mo to do my own. It's no fair deal at all. " Another ono equally irate stopped to the front with his grievance What in thunder do the coun cil want to keep changing grades all the time for ? Hero they go to work and raise up Bluff street , or ono ido of it , and then they went at it and oivercd the grade on Eighth street , icar Alderman James' property , so that 10 wouldn't have to fill up. Why in the vorld don't they lot the grades bo where hey are nnd not keep tinkering with hem till a follow don't know whether to fill or cut down , or hump up in the middle. Then came a suspicious sort of a citi- on , that is , suspicious of others. Ho was "dead sure" there was something vrong. "How is it , " said ho , "that the ity is making property owners pay hirty-two cents for dirt , when it used to > o only twenty-two. When the city > aid out of the general fund the iirt was hauled a tiiird cheaper , but now that the property owners ire taxed with it high prices are paid. Vhy , there are 200 or 300 teams hauling irt and averaging fifteen loads a day 00 teams at littoon loads makes 4,000 oath a day. Do you BOO ? Now , if there s being paid ten cents n load moro than ughl to bo , there is § 1DO n day profit or somebody above what uspd to bo paid , want to know who gets this ? I toll you , omo are making big money out of this , , nd the property owners are being pretty icavily taxed for it. " The complainant was asked why , if lie city council gave the contracts at too ligh a price ho didn't do his own filling. 'Well , I toll you , ono reason is I haven't lie ready cash just now to pay for it , and nether reason is that I don't believe the ity can make mo pay. I am old the thing is illegal and .ho courts will declare it so. If I go head and do my own filling , then it is ono , and it is to late to squeal. So I ot them go ahead , if they want to. " "Say , Mr. BEK man1 ' from the other , 'suppose wo HO ahead and pay for our lling out of our pockets , and then next roar a now council turns around and goes jack on this way of doing , and docs as lioy used to do , pay for filling out of the onoral fund , would't ' that put mo in a uoor fix. After paying my taxes for oars into the general fund , and to payer or filling in front of ether fplks'proporty , nd then paying for my filling out of my ) wn pocket , then I'd have to go on pay- ng taxes again to fill other folks , who cnows but a now council , this year or next year , may change back again. " Still another query was asked by a Third warder : "Say , what has the pres ent council done anyway to show for the nonoy spent ? All the street improve ments about are paid for. or charged up 0 the property owners , so the city hasn't Hid to spend any money that way. The city has bought the Uouldon building md patched it up and built a little brick wilding called a jail. What else is hero to show for it ? Are there any new itcaniors , or now fire horses , or now on- ino houses , or anything else ? Perhaps 1 little money lias been spent on the rook , but what great things have boon [ pno this year by the council ? They ; ivo away Union avenue , with § 40,000 > r so to the Union Pacific , but what have hey got the city in its place ? " A still further puzzle for this aide of ho house came in the form of a query in regard to the prices paid for dirt. There must bo some money made in this filling ip of streets. A neighbor told mo yestor- lay that the man who had the contract , 'or filling in front of his place told him , hat if ho would pay for the work inf stead of fighting it , ho would knock off six cents a yard from contract irico. Now if ho could make money it six cents a yard less , what must ho make when ho gets contract price. 'Tho dirt don't cost anything , and some folks ire so anxious to got their lots cut down that they are willing to pay eoinothing to gut the dirt hauled away. " Such are samples of the mutterings riong the line , and there is much dissat isfaction among many. _ Just what it will result in is not yet evident. It is to bo tiopod that city improvements will not bo stayed , but the methods of getting them ana paying for them seem to need some changing in order to hotter satisfy the people. ' Mrs , M.
