MINOE MENTION , Holiday goods at Seaman's. See Joseph Roitcr's fall goods. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnoll's. Christmas cards and toys at Seaman's. J. C. Biiby yesterday ran service pipes for water supply into Marshal Key's sloro on Broadway , and into A. B. Walker's residence. Henry Mudgo's little daughter Sadie , who has boon quito sick with malarial fe ver , is reported as recovering quito rap idly under the care of Dr. Green. The public schools oloso next Friday , and will reopen Wednesday , January 2 , next jcar. There will ho some excrcivcs at the Bloomer fchool building on Friday afternoon , a litt'o ' out of the usual order. The botroth.il of Calvin Martin and Mary Emma Daus , both of Omaha , wai yesterday made a matter of record ; also that of Samuel Levi , of Dedham , Car roll county , and Sarah Rock , of this city. The sensation of the body of an infant being found on the Lank of the crook , has been robbed of its mystery. It proves to have been a premature birth in a respectable family , and the body after being placed in the b&x was entrusted tea a colored man to bury. It appears that he did not do his duty very well. Dr Cross was yesterday arraigned . the district court on the charge of mur der , and made answer that he was in dicted by his true name. This formality having boon gone through , and Decem ber 20th sot ns the day for trial of the case , the doctorjrotired from the court room , the old bail being his surety for appearance when wanted. Cox , of The Acorn , figures up that the town of Oakland spends $ D,000 for drinks , over $2,000 for cigars , § 875 for billiards , 91,000 for the ministry , .31,200 for schools , and $510 for the support of hia newspaper. Thisarray of figures will doubtless cause Oakland to cut down its newjpapcr expenditure. Ucnry Dust , a darkly tinted prisoner , w.i3 before Judge Aylemvorth yesterday on the charge of stealing a sack of Hour from 1'lph. Huntingdon's store. Ho was found guilty , and in view of the holidays coming the judge sentenced him to jail for only four days , so that ho might be out in time to enjoy Christmas. Messrs. A. J. Mandol , L. Hums , D. Friedman and A. Luvy gave a farewell serenade last evening to Miss Doctor and Miss Itiggloman , at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Friedman. After some selec tions by the Bavarian band the par.y were invited in. They remained , and dancing was soon begun , and continued until an early hour this morning. Now that Jcnnio Flomming's stairway has been torn down , because it occupied n part of the street , the rest ought U go , so it would bo a fair shako alt around. There are areas cut into the sidewalk at the telegraph ofiico , at the Union Avenue hotel , an outside stairway at The Nonpa reil office , and in tact ninny trespass on the space assigned for sidewalks. If ono is allowed this privilege all should bo. In running to the fire Monday evening Chief Tomploton foil over a pile of brick standing right in the middle of the side walk on Eighth street. The chief was somewhat bruised by the fall. There should bo no discouragement of improve ments , and yet there seems no possible necessity for n man who is simply putting r. brick foundation under his house , piling brick up in the center of the walk , especially when ho has a largo lot not otherwise occupied. The Council Blud'n Protective associa tion , I. 0. 0. F. , liavo elected the fol lowing oflicora for the ensuing year : Thomas Bowman , president ; .J. W. Berger - ger , vice president ; F. A. Burke , secre tary ; D. 0. Bloomer , treasurer ; J. .M. Matthews , actuary. The directors aio : i'A. . Burke , D. 0. Bloomor.D.O.Boyd , Thomas Bowman , J. W. Berger , G. F. Smith , 0. Vounkorman , M. F. Rohrer , John Dickey , Frank Grass , J. W , Poro- goy , J. M. Matthews. During the past 12 years the association has paid § 102- 793 in do th IOBSOH , and has now in the treasury $4,000. 0ITY COUNCIL , Various Street Improvements Koard of Health The city council mot in regular session last evening. It was ordered that nil of the streets which linvo lately boon filled shall bo curbed and guttered. it was ordered that the lloys between Seventh and Eighth streets , south of Broadway , bo filled up to grudo. Periniaiion was given to properly owners on the avenues south of Broad way , as far as Seventh avenue , to have their curbing eet 14 foot into the street , leaving six fcot for nidowalk and eight foot for trees and gross. Lowii Hammer was notified that la must at once complete his contract foi curbing Main street or the cily wouli . commence action against his bondsmen. The council then went into session us a board of health , Complaint was made that cortaii property owners on the south end rl Bluff street and on Bond street wore filling a lot with manure and a thin cov ering of dirt. The marshal was in etructed to notify them to atop at once , or they would be liable to prosecution The council adjourned to meet iiex Wednesday evening' . On that evening the council will meet for the first time ii the new city building. Mm , A. Tlio case of Uetrroft nyninst tlio cily las crcittcd much interest because of its involving questions which prncticnlly nf rcct all property otvncra hero. Throwing nitdo nil the lcg.il tcchnicnli- ics Judge Heed's decision wni in sub stance thntwhoro the filling of the street ip to grade was preparatory to paving , hat it could ho charged up to propnrty owners , and in the cnao before him thence nco of the papers showed that it was for , hia purpose. The streets in controversy are Kighth and Ninth from Uroadwny to the crook , tnd of course it is genrrally ) oliovcd that the council haa no intention ) f paving these streets , and the words 'preparatory to paving" nro alleged to lave l > eon put in the resolution ordering ho filling , dimply to make the filling .cchnically nn incident to the paving , thus making the owno'rs of abutting prop erty liable instead' of the city. The laporadid not show this claim , however , uul Judge Iloed passed upon the matter as the face of the papers showed. It is now predicted that the papers will jo amended so ns to sot up that the council put in the words "preparatory to laving" for a fraudulent purpose , .hoy not intending to pave , mid lint the case will bo carried ip. The city oflicials declare , however , .hat llioy do intend to pave. Tt in predicted by city ollicials that not > njy will Itroadway mid Main strootn bo laved within the no.xt year , but that the itroots leading from Broadway to thu creek as far west na the Northwcstarn lepot will bo paved , and also the streets cading south from Broadway for ono > lock , they claiming that this will bo iccoasaiy io protect tlio work on I ( road- vay. vay.Tho city has won in this first round , and yet the case is not considered defin- bcly settled , there being the promise of n appeal.
