Stocks Wall street was alive this morning
long before the usual hour to begin business.
Last night there w.-w talk about another serious
break in the market this morning. Such ru
mors made brokers anxious to bo on the spot
o look after their own ami their customers'
ntere43. Hundred ! of Wall street men away
on vacation were summoned homo by telegraph
last night , and at 10 o'clock this morning the
Stock exchange presented ustratigo appcaianco
for the middle of August. There was appa
rently .1 restoration of c Jiifidoiico to a very
con idcrablo c\tent in the stock market in the
forenoon. The market opened \ to 1 per cent
.higher , and continued alternately strong nnd
.sternly throughout tl.o forenoon , the net result
of trading up to 12:110 : being an advance of \
to I ! ; } per cent on the general lUt of active
blocks over the closing last night , the largest
oxtreu'O advance being Oregon & Transconti
nental per cent , Hiirlinjjton & CJuincy 2 per
cent , \Vabash 1 $ per cent , Illinois Central 1
per cent , Lnckawanna and Northern & Omaha ,
cach 13 per cent , at one timo. A bout the open
ing Western Union was weak , and declined 1J
per cent from last night's closing price to 72.J ,
lint afterwards advanced to 7-H. The weak-
liens of the Western Union was attributed to
the operator's strike , and consequently less
busine-M , together with proapecti\ competition
in the work of telegraphy. The total sales up
to 12oO : were about 250,000 shares. After 120 : ! !
the market was at first very strong , and was
further advanced . } to 2 per cent , but after 1
o'clock on the annottncemont of the failure of
K. C. Stedman & Co. , there was a reaction of
| to lg per cent. In the la t hour the market
\vn generally lower , the decline being | to 13
per cent , the latter being Western Union to
72J , with fractional declines on the remainder.
In the final dealings the market was strong ,
4vnd there was a general advance , moro than
recovering the decline and making the highest
prices of the day. The result of to-day's business
was n general advance over closing prices of
last night , ranging from \ to H ? per cent.
London was a free buyer in our market to
day , and St. Paul , Lake Shore , New Y rk
Central , Denver , Ivrio and Wabash preferred
were taken for that account.
