The strike of the compositors on the
liroo Omaha newspaper * begun last
Thursday , will soon be like a thrice-told
alo. All the dailyshavo appeared regularly
since the strike , witli some reductions in
lie quantity of matter , but in the main
satisfactory to the proprietors and pub-
islicrs.
The striking printcre have nmdo vain
and.dcsporato efforts to prevent men from
; oing to work , gangs have been posted at
ho depot to intercept men coming in'on
rains , and qtiito a number have been
hus intercepted. Threats of violence
vero made to men who went to work ,
although none have as yet been assaulted.
The striking printers issued amanifcsto
Yiday evening with n garbled statement
of the facts of the case , and an appeal for
aid and sympathy from laboringVunTand
ncrchants , coupled with threats to the
lublishors of the dailies. Saturday eve-
ling they followed this up by scattering
> roadcast a paper called the Daily Union.
In this paper a flaring call was issued for
i mas meeting of working men the same
light and a challenge to Rosewater , Yost
ind Richardson to meet them and state
.heir side of thn case. On Saturday at
i p. m. , Mr. Shelly , President of the
Printer's Union and another leading
iiomber of their body , made a rcqust to
lio'C managers of the three Omaha
dailies , to meet with them witl\ view to
agreeing upon some compromise. In ro-
ponso to this request , Messrs. Yost ,
lichardson and Rosowatcr attended this
conference.
Mr. Shelley expressed himself anxious
that the conflict should cease , and dopro-
cvted the strike , because ho thought it
vos ill-advised. Ho believed that it was
n the interest of the men and the pub-
ishers , to make mutual concessions , and
) reposed _ , as a compromise , that tie ( price
> f night composition bo raised from 32 to
J3J cents per thousand ems. On the
other hand , the Union would rcdodo from
ho rule that requires all advertising to
o by the piece , if the provisions of the
schedule wore accepted , and furthermore
ill men on the strike wore to bo employ
ed.
Messrs. Rosowatcr and Yost said they
iod given permanent places to some men
whom they were bound to to protect.
They finally , however , agreed to accept
; ho compromise proposed by Mr. Shelley.
Mr. Richardson did not like a compro
mise with strikers , but , after further
talk , ho said ho would give his final de
cision after talking with his partner , Dr.
Miller. Wo understand the Herald pro
prietors finally agreed to yield.
At G p. m. the terms of the compro
mise were submitted to a meeting of the
Printers Union and were contemptuous
ly rejected by on overwhelming majority ,
The called mass meeting at Kuony s Hall
was not much of a success so far as num
bers were not over 125 persons nrosonl
and half that number were printers ,
Speeches were made by several printers ,
appealing to other trades unions for ae
two aid in their struggle , and to Boycot
the newspapers and tiioso who patron
izcd them.
About 9 o'clock Mr. Rosewater ap
pcarcd and it was like a bombshol
thrown into camp , as ho was not oxpec
ted. Ho wascallcd for by some of tin
working men present nnd presented hi ,
side of the case in i
very earnest and forcible speech , whicl
was. loudly applauded , notwithstanding
frequent interruptions. Want of spaci
prevents us publishing the points mado.
Ho was followed by several otlici
speakers and the meeting iidjournci
without any action.
The rejection by the Printers' Unioi
of the compromise proposed by thoii
own president and adopted by the publishers
lishors renders all further parley useless
The publishers now propose to continue
hiring men and guaranteeing them perm
anent places.

THE WARREN CASE.
A Defendant Y/ho / lias Been Standing
Trials for Several Months ,
III * Acquittal In Eaoli and Ever )
CIIKC.
Ono of the most interesting cases \ \ hie !
liavo occupied the time of our courts of late ,
is that of W. W. Warren , who wa
arrested in San Diego , Cal. , on tluj 22nd
of Oct. , last , over xcvcn months age
on the charge of defrauding the bank ol
Caldwell , Hamilton A : Co. out of a con <
sidorahlu amount of money by clicckt
iven him by the Union Pacific and B. &
M , roads for money not duo him. The
railroads were in reality working up the
ease and instigated the arrest.
On appearing in the police court War
ren was at once discharged , as it waf
[ ilain that the bank proprietors wcro nol
th ones to complain , iw the checks pre
sented were bona fide checks given bj
the companies , who iilonLif anyone
could prosecute , must do so.
The two companies , upon this filed coin-
plaints _ against the defendant , charging
liiin with obtaining money , which tlu
checks represented , on false pretenses.
Ho was indicted nn both these com.
plaints , and aequjttsd on both. In the
B. ifc M. case the jury returned a verdicf
of "not guilty without leaving their neat * .
_ Still determined to convict their vic
tim , who hud already been in confine-
incut for nearly two-thirds of n year , the
prosecution wont back to the old Caldwell -
well and Hamilton case , on which ho was
lirst discharged by the police judge and
liad him indicted by the recent Grand
Jury. This case eamo up this week
before Judges Neville and Wakoloj
on a motion to dismiss. II
appears that the last legislature
passed a now law in respect to such cases
repealing all former laws , without anj
saving clause providing for prosecutions
under the old law. The ground main
tained by Hon. J. C. Cowin , who argued
the motion at considerable length , wat
that there is now no law whatever for the
prosecution of this case , as no law can acl
retrospectively. The court concurred
wjth General Cowin's views and again
discharged him and his freedom does
not rest upon this technicality , but as
shown after proving in a long and trying
ordeal to the satisfaction of courts ana
juries his entire innocence.
It was also charged of late that the de
fendant was wanted by the authorities ol
Brownwillo , for some offense committed
there but this was disproved also by r
telegram seen by the reporter , instructing
the officials at this point to release him m
ho was not wanted there.
Mr. Warren , now that ho hao govu
through so much trouble to vindicate hit
good name , proposes to locate in Onmhr
and prove to the public that ho is ai
honest man.

THE THOMAS CONCERT.
A Noteworthy Performance at tlic
Opera Honse ,
-
The' Thomas concerts , which closed on
Saturday evening , were the most olnbo.
rate , brilliant and successful instrumen
tal i > cif ( > nnanccs over given in the city ,
The orchestra numbered sixty pieces ,
every one of which was in trained and
skillful hands. Mr. Theodore Thomas ,
who is the best equipped leader in the
United States , conducted the entiretper.
fornianccs , and nothing whatever was
wanting to the perfection of the whole.
Mr. Thomas' system of leadership reach
es to the bottom , and overlooks nothing
essential to success in every respect. Not
least among its excellencies is the hand *
dling on the instruments , and this is best
seen perhaps in the system of bowing lie
ho him introduced. Every stringed in
strument falls into the system , the bows
of all moving together in the sumo di
rection. This method not only affords
the appearance of perfect unison anioirn
the performers , but also insures absolute
uniformityjjof treatment , and places the
volume of sound , at every moment at the
pm-fect disposal of the leader.
The BEE , in this general reviuwal of
the concerts , will not aim at a systematic
notice , but will content , itself , with a
grouping of the chief character star fea
tures.
And , first , as to what wcro presented ,
hero are the purely orchestral features of
the three programmes. From Beethov
en one piece was given at each concert :
The andante from the second symphony ,
the allegretto from the eighth symphony ,
and the famous Leonore overture , No. 3.
From Mcndclsson two instrumental se
lections wore given : the overture to Jtuy
Jilas and the overture to Midsummer
Night's Dream. Of Weber also two
specimens were given the Invllalion to
the Dance , adapted by Hector Berloi/ ,
and the Jubilee overture. Three charac
teristic pieces of Liszt were givqn the
Hungarian Ithapsodi/ ; fantas ia on
Hungarian airs , with itive-King at the
piano , and the Sf/mphonlo PoemRos
sini's William Tell overture was present
ed ; Schumann's Traumcrci , a largo from
Handel , with violin obligate , and the
Strauss waltz , Jlcauliful Jlluc Danube.
The pieces tic resistance , along with
the pieces from Liszt were the selections
from Wagner the LohengrinVorfplcl
and the Tnnnhamcr March and overture
and the celebrated Bcrloiz composition ,
the Damnation of Faint. This last was
first produced in this country about two
years since by Mr. Thomas. It embraces
three movements ( a ) the Invocation Min
uet of the Will o' the Wisps ; ( b ) Dance
of the Sylphs ; ( e ) the llakoczy March
These wore the purely instrumental num
bers. Then there were the following vo
cal numbers by members of the
company , each with full orchestra accom-
panymont : Sclmbcit's Am. Mccr , by
Frank Hommery ; Hondo , from the Hu-
Kuonots by Mrs. Cole : Scenes from Lo-
ncngrln ; Sound an Alarm , from Han-
dit's Judas ; La Jleinc do & 'aba ( Gou
nod ) by Mrs. Allen ; the Jiigolcito quartette -
totto ; the Evening Star romansa from
Tannhauscr , by llcainn ry ; O. ' Fatimtt
from Weber's Aba Jf < ( ssan , by Mrs.
Cole ; and the Beethoven Trio.
M'mo Hive-King played Saint Saens1
concerto in G minor ; the Liszt fantasia
on Hung on an Ain , and the Chopin con
certo in E minor.
The Omaha chorus sang two choruses
from Wagner's Lohengrin at the first
concert and closed the second concert
with four selections from Hondit's Mes
siah. In this lust , however , the orchestra
pretty nearly drowned the singers out , a
circumstance wholly unnecessry , inas
much ftstho _ chorus was thoroughly1 up in
the music. But for this unfortunate and
needless circumstance the choruses ,
Lift up your Jfcad and Hallelujah
would have boon among the prime at
tractions of the concert. In both of
those elaborate selections the chorus was
fully prepared , and did a work which
only needed to bo hoard to bo fully ap
preciated. There wore about 150 voices
engaged , with the Harmonica Society
and the Omaha Glep Club as n base. The
services of Mr. David Blakoly , who has
had the voices in the immediate training
for two weeks should not bo overlooked ;
while those of Nelson , Mayer and Smith ,
the leaders of the clubs , must
not bo forgotten. The
local singpra had , at best , an ungrateful
task , audit isto bo regretted that through
the inanifest inattention of Mr. Thomas
their efforts should not have been per
mitted to sneak for themselves.
Among tiu orchestral selections , all of
which wore given in a perfectly charac
teristic manner , the most notable were
the Boothoved andante at the first con
cert , a composition in perfect classical '
style ; the music from the 2d symphony' ,
which was very peculiar , and was beauti
fully rendered ; the Invitation ( o the
Dance , which is Gorman to the last de
gree , and embraced , a vast deal of fine
playing , with great rapidity and precision
of movement , and last , but not least , the
damnation of Faitst , in which every re
finement of orchestral playing b required.
To these should , however , bo added the
Hungarian Jthapsody , which is an orig.
inal composition of Liszt's in the Hunga
rian stylo.
Mr. Thomas' singers nil did better in
the concerted pieces than in single selec
tions , and did best of all in the oratorio
pieces ; and they did best of all in the
J/eaita/t selections , particularly Miss
Cole in the latter song , with sustained
and equable power , aim loft an impres
sion which will not soon bo forgotten.
'Mine. Rive-King is , in technique cer
tainly a consummate pianisto. She plays
without the score ; and what seems sur
prising is that ono who is such n master
of the technical peculiarities of the pecul
iarities of her instrument should still bo
so unsympathetic and so cold. Her mas
terpiece was the Saint-Saons concerto in
three parts , the last of which consists of
pure "gymnastics. "
Upon the whole , these concerts have
been of a character now to the Omaha
public ; and if they shall prove the begin
ning of a better understanding and of
accoixl aiming the singers and musicians
of our city , their effect will not depart
with them. Had the weather not boon
do oppressively hot , the attendance would
liavo been much better enough better to
doubtesa have relieved Mr. Boyd from
the necessity of paying out two or three
hundred dollars from his own pocket.
This is to bo greatly regretted ; for , cer
tainly , Omaha has never enjoyed so var
ied and rare a musical treat , and it is to
bo presumed that that the future depends
materially on the uuccess of this experi
ment. In this light , the financial lot sto
Mr. Boyd is sincerely to bo regretted.
