THE PRINTER'S STRIKE. A SnMen M Ill-Ailyiscd Moyc iiy Omaba Newspaper Compositors , Wliluh Cannot Meet With From Other Working Men. How It Cnmc About. At 0 o'clock p. in. Thursday , a committee of the Omalm TyjK rafical Union , waited upon the proprietors of the Hr.iiAU > with a printed scale of rules and prices which they demanded should go into effect at once. This would have required n raise of about ten pur cent , the present scale being 32 cents and the demand being for 35 cents per thousands ems. The now scale also imputed rigid regulations thai would increase the expenses of n morning daily from $25 to 50 n w eek. Mr. Richardson wo arc told , declined to con sider the scale , but offered an advance from < * < 2 to 33 cents. A similar peremp tory notice had been served on Manager Yost of the RKi't'mJOAK with the same result. A general strike was at once ordered in nil the daily offices and at seven o'clock the men everywhere threw down their sticks and emit work. Atjjtho BKK oflice in the absence of Mr. Rosewater - water , who happened to be across the river , the following letter was left early in the evening : OMAHA JU.VK 28 th. Mr K Itwewatfr. Sin You are heieby notified that until you agree to pay the scale of prices adopt ed on Sunday last , the members of all Typographical Unions are prohibited from working on your paper. By order of the Union. D. C. SHKLLV , President. Wit. SfTTLK , Rec. Secy. At half past eight when Mr Rosowatcr returned and found this note ho express ed great surprise. No demand had boon made upon him to raise wages , ho had noon no scale of prices and the rates paid to compositors in the BEE was tho' same as that demanded from the other offices. This certainly seemed A very uncalled for and illadvificd strike so far as the BEE oftico was concerned. In order that the public may understand the exact situation wo will give u brief outline of the facts ; A year ago last March , when the labor troubles occurred in Omaha , there was some complaint among our printers about the high price of living and small earnings with our typo and measure. The BEE was then paying 28 cents per thousand for day composition and 32 for night composition. Although no demand - mand was made for a raise , the proprietors otors of the BKK voluntarily raised the wages of their compositors to 30 cents per thousand for day men and 35 cents for night work. The other papers mean- tiino continncd nt 32 cents a thousand , and so remained up to the strike , 'in other words , for sixteen months the BKK has boon paying ten per cent , moro for exactly the same labor than WOH paid by the other dailies. Our men wore paid regularly in cash every week. The regu lation of the oflice was entirely in their own hands , and the best of feeling ex isted. This spring a change f'n the width in our columns was proposed , and an under standing was arrived nt with the com positors of this oftico that in the event ol such change the BEE should pay no mor for its composition than the other papers , which was nothing but reasonable. The compositors thought that the rate on other papos would be raised to the prices in the BEE ollico , but they promised that if they did not succeed in securing the .advance , the BKE should bo placed on the same level , The change in width of column was nmdo by the BKK on the 10th of Juno , but up to date we have still been paying the ton per cent , moro than the other papers , On Wednesday Mr Fitzmorris , night ( oroman won requested to notify the night men that the price of night composition in this oflico would bo 33 cents per thous and after the 1st of July. No change in rule was to.bo . made on day men. This was still one cent per thousand or throe per cent moro than was being jtoid by the , Herald and Republican , It was no re duction in wages because the change in width made up for the diflbranco and the earnings would remain the samo. It only affected seven among the entire force ol printers. They were further notified thai if the other dailies raised their price wi should pay as high as the highest. Thii was the situation when the strike was ordered dored w ithout n moments warning ant without n chance for consultation or com promise. ' So far us our otlico is concerned , tin striking printers have certainly actet . very ungratefully , considering the treatment mont they have received at nil times and the Union , which had met with m obstacle from this quarter , has assailoi 51- 51ho the only paper that has given the cuus id of labor support in this auction and so ng the example of good wages and libcm rules. in- Tlio outcome cannot fail to bo disaa liy trous to the striking printers , and , n ITS usual , the hardship will fall on the hardworking iey BO , working , orderly , married men , wh am cannot leave the town , while the tranij ou who go from town to town getting u his the strikes expect to live on other men earnings nud have n jolly time loafin ns around the street comers. Noteworthy Performance at the Opera House , Orclu-Htrii mid ChornH DoliiK Full Justice In cho Occasion , wlillc the Klfcl TIlCIllNClVCH. Tlio first Thomas concert won given last evening- The linimo wax nearly filled and the audience wai as dressy and styl ish a one as ha ever assembled at tlio opcni hotiHo. TUB UKE is tumble to de vote to the concert , in this issue , as much space as it desires to give ; but in what it says it takes pleasure in commending Mr. Thomas' orchestra as well as the inciden tal part borne by the singers of Omaha in the concert. Tim Thomas orchcstta numbering some sixty pieces needs no words of praise. Very many of thoread- UIH of the IKK ! have long been familiar with Mr. Thomas' services , and it goes without saying that his orchestra is com posed of men thototighly well prepared for all they have to do. _ It is true that tlio most they did lost night was with piecen thltr- oughly familiar to concert goers such as Weber's "Invitation to the D.mcu , " tSchuman's "Traiimeroi , " and the over ture to William Tell ; hut these were ren dered with a mingled abandon , grace and care which quite made them new again , oven to cars of musical progress. The Beethoven andante (2nd ( symphony ) and the Lis/t Jt/iapHOtly , no less famil iar than those above mentioned , were given with a feeling and expression which made them almost now. The concerto , in three movements , by Mme Ilivo King , was well calculated for the display of tcchnifnio without deep feel ing ; the second movement , however. called forth a display of some feeling. M'mo King plays with a correctness al most above criticism. The Lohengrin Vorgpicf was wonder fully well played , and gave a nracticable idea of the peculiar characteristics and difficulties of Wagner's music. The scenes given from the first act , inhich our Omaha chorus bore a part , were suf ficient to give an idea of the individuality of the great composer , The Omaha cho rus did itn part of the work with spirit and correctness. The BEE hopes to bo able togive a more adequate notice of Mr. Thomas' concerts of this afternoon and evening , and at the same time to fill out the outlines winch it has merely hinted at of last evenings very superior instrumental performance , Ncckivear.
