At Seven o'ojock last evening , nil the
compositors employed in the offices of the
Omaha dailies deserted their cases to go
on a general strike for higher wages.
Hating no previous notice of the in
tended strike , wo wore not prepared to
supply tho'vacant places last night. Wo
therefore beg our patrons to bo indulgent
for a few days until our printers force is
recruited , or the strike terminated.
Meanwhile we will endeavor to furnish
our readers a synopsis of the most import
ant local and general news.

Yesterday- morning the exorcises ar
ranged for the eighth annual commence
ment of St. Francis Academy caused n
very largo gathering of parents , relatives
and friends of the participants to gather
at the building , every seat being taken ,
and mauy of the audience being content
to stand oven rather than miss the inter
esting programme. The rooms , thrown
together into ono largo hall for the pur
pose , were very attractively decorated
with festoons of green leaves , with bou
qucts , floral designs , and with mottos of
green upon a background , of white , their
visitors being greeted by such wordings
ns "Religion and Science , " and "Wel
come. " The stage nt ono end of the
room was very attractively arranged nnd
had the appearance of a bower of beauty.
The programme , as given in yesterday's
BKK , was carried out very successfully.
It was opened in n beautiful manner by
an entrance march in which all the girls
appeared clad in white , ornamented with
flowers and bright sashes , and though the
stage gave Jimited room for so many
children , yet the marches , counter
marches and various evolutions , were
performed with wonderful accuracy , Ui
scholars at the close forming n semicircle
cle , facing the audience , and graded ac
cording to height , the little ones
in front. ' In this position they
gave a chorous , "Gloria , " by Mo
zart , ' in 'which their voices made t
grand and sweet harmony As the last
strains of the chorus died away , Miss
Fannie McAttoo stopped out of the cir
cle at the front , and gave n very pleasing
welcome and salutatory , after which the
various numbers of the progammo as an
nounced passed along very smoothly ,
with much variety and merit. The little
folks in their Violet Song , in which they
tossed their little boquots to the nudione
was especially pleasing , and called fortl
enthusiastic applause. A little operetta ,
"Miracle of the Roses" was performed
cliarmingly. In such a lengthy ana var
ied progrgmmo , it is difficult to purlieu
lame with airy justice. All the partial
pants merited praise , and the exorcises
wore so wisely Arranged as to give an excellent
cellent showing of the culture gained a
this' school. The selections of music wore
both of the simple and of the highcs
classical kind , vocal and instrumental
while readings , essays , etc. .brought before
fore the public the equally commendable
showings of the ability of the pupils , and
the excellent instruction of tho.sistors.
The presentation , to ho graduates
was by Miss Annie Lusk , and the response
sponso by Miss Hattie Blaksim , afte :
which the honors wore conferred ; 'gradu
ating medals eta. , and an excellent vale
dictory was given by Miss Belle Hondor
son , who acquitted herself grandly. The
address was ono of the best over 'given
hero upon such nn occasion. Rov. Futh
er Clark of Red Oak made sonio very befitting
fitting remarks , and gave some excelled
advice to the pupils. The exorcises closed
with ono of Schumann's choruses , wel
rendered indeed. )
The Graduating Medal and Highcs
Honors were conferred on Jliss Fanni
McAtee , Miss Maggie Swift , Miss Haiti
Blaksim and Miss Belle Henderson.
