A young man was canvassing Saturday
for n sort of musical book , claiming to
enable a person to read music : at sight

representing his interviews with some of
cur music teachers ho tried to induce per

bo used in receiving the statements of
these who thus travel from house to house.
Our regular dealers generally get hold of
everything that is worth anything in their

These who went from this city to DOS
Moincs , to attend itho grand grove of
Druids , have many good words to say of
Mayor P. V. Carey , of that city , not only
for his activity as a mayor , but for his
kindly treatment of the visitors. He
provided carriages for ix drive about the
city , and every way showed such hosni-
tality as to place tbovisiting Druidsunder
many obligations. Not satisfied with that ,
he invited some of them to go with him
in his special ear to Denver to attend the
Grand Army reunion there. Besides being -
ing an enthusiastic Druid he is post com
mander of the Grand Army of the Repub
lic , and is now building , in Des Monies ,
a hall for the use of the post. Ho seems
to show the same kind of enterprise in
what over ho takes hold of.

felt over the way visitors were used , and

SEWING SCHOOL ,
Girls Who Are Trying Not Only to lie
Good , Bnt Good for Something ,
The Worthy Kntri'iirlso ot Kind-
llcnrlod Women.
For about ix year there lias been in
progress hero n monthly untorprinu wlticJi
hns been progresHing quietly , nud with
no llourisli of tritniiet.s ] , and which cer
tainly merit * more jiulilio recognition
than linn yet been given it. It is in fact
a Hewing school , the purpose of which is
to help the young girls < < f the poorer
families of the city , and to help them in
10 truest sense , by helping them to help
lemselves.
The school meets every Saturday after-
( Mm from . ' ! o'clock to 5 o'clock , and on
tit Saturday afternoon the time , instead
f being given to instruction and practice
i sewing , wns allowed for social festivi-
CH. There were thirty-four of these
oung girls who enjoyed the occasion ,
'huro were games and story tolling , plays
.nil . merry-muking , after wliich the cliil-
'roii were served with refreshments.
The occasion proved n bright spot in-
eed in the lives of many of these ehil-
rcn , and will serve to make the asiocia-
IH of the sowing school stronger and
appicr than ever.
These children as they are gathered on
iiiturday afternoon for instruction form
idecd an interesting study , and the en-
'rpriso is proof that there is much prac-
cal Christianity still left in the world ,
he girls are divided into classes , . Those
ist entering the school are placed in the
class. Hero they are taught to over-
and patch work , etc. When they ad-
unco into the I ) class they are given
ght running sowing , rullles for aprons ,
te. The next advancement is into the
V. class , where the work is mostly on
.prong , and there they prepare them-
elves to enter what is known as the gar-
lent department , where they are taught
> make their own dresses and clothing ,
'ho progress made by some of these girls in
stonishmgand the training they getin the
chool supplies in most eases what is
icking in their homo life , and enables
hem to bo much more independent and
elpful. Each girl has her own sowing
ag , upon which is her name , and a
icket which shows what work she has ac-
: omplished. AH far as possible the girls
'urnish ' their own material , but where
lot able to do so it is furnished them ,
nd the results of their labor is in all
IIIBUH their own. Aside from this gra-
nitons training in the practical art of
ising scissors , needle and'thread , at
ention is given to their manners ; their
icrsonal habits and cleanliness , while
heir mental and moral habits are not
verlooked either. There are brief de-
I'otional exercises , swinging , short talks ,
lories read to them , and other means
itod to give healthy interest to the
ichool.
The ladies who have been helping iii
his practical charitable work are ccrtain-
y worthy of remembrance , and the
iiiblie should show its appreciation 1 > j
ustaining the enterprise by giving time ,
noney , material , or whatever is needful ,
.o make it a porm.ment success. To MI-H.
\ F. Ford , perhaps , more than unj
( her one person , is due the success at-
ained , but there have been other willing
lelpers , among them being Airs. A.V. .

' ) berholt/.er , Mrs. 11. M. Stevens , ant
Mrs. Harry .lames. In the entertain' '

Miss Nellie Hatcher was especially help
ful. With such ladies interested , the
rt'ork promises to continue a success , am
its mission is such as to commend itself ti
ill who desire to see homes made hap
pier , and girls made more helpful am

Our Now Loan and Improvement C <
investigation into the matter convince
us that one of the most etpiitablo , reason
able and feasible plans of building house
is that proposed and in operation by th
Mercantile Loan , Trust and Improve

ing in shares in this institution , which i
backed by some of our beat and most re
liable business men , it becomes possib ]
and comparatively easy for man o
moderate means to secure ix comfortabl
homo for himself and family. In takin
