The stock market to-day in general was
dull but strong , and the net result of the
day's busmo'a was an advance of i to Ijj
per cent , viz : Union Pncifio was higher ,
owing to the declaration of tha usual quar
terly dividend of 1J per cent and the report
that Blake Bros , had negotiated 1,500,000
of new collateral trust bonds The ad
vance in St. Louis and San Franosco ! is
due to the reports that the company con
templates paying dividends on preferred
after July. Manitoba was alee an excep
tional feature , being 3j per cent lower in
tbo forenoon than at the close of Tuesday ,
the decline being mainly due to the de
crease in earnings and the probability of a
rate war with the Canadian Pacific for
Winnipeg business.
