Stocks weak nnd lower , showing n de
clining tendency nil the forenoon on
moderate volume of business , After 12:00 :
the market waa firmer and prices advanc
ed J@ ' per cent , on the general Hat and
1J per cent , for Omaha preferred. The
Union Pacific waa the principal feature ,
fluctuating over wider range than any
other active stocks. In the las ; hour the
market was stronger , and several stocks
advanced to the higheit prices of the day ,
notably the Louitville & Nashville , Lake
Shore , Central Pacific , Lackawanna , St.
Paul , Union Pacific and Jersey Central.
Closing the market waa irregular aa com
pared to Saturday , The general tone of
thi market at the close , however , was
stronger than Saturday.
The Evening Peat says : "Manipulation
the Union Pacific in the forenoon was
made apparent by the fact that a sale If
100 shares waa reported at Uoo at the same
instant 95 Jo waa bid. The presumed seller
at 05o waa in hopes of bringing out some
slop orders at that price and thus breaking
the market. Under rules of the board
theee tactics for depressing prices of stock
are prohibited , and upon an investigation
by the authorities the sale at 05c was cau-
celled , This incident served to show that
the depreseion in Union Pacific stock waa
artificial and waa caused by the manipula
tion of bears. "
