Saturday Evening , March 31. f
Although trade has been rather quiet
during the pait week no one seems to be
surprised or even disappointed as the
weather has been unfavorable. Iletallers ,
if any , areth ) only merchants complain
ing as the jobbers are doing as much as
much as they expect. A good feeling ex
istd throughout and the prospects are all
that could be desired. Commisilon men
are expecting and preparing for a rueh an
soon as the weather open though they have
been holding oil for fome time pist as the
grocers have been willing to buy but light
ly. Fruit and produce are in good demand
and such goods in this line as the market
affords find a ready sale. The prices In
uch commodities are high , and will re
main so until the market is better sup
plied which will be two or three weeks and
probably longer. Dry goods are firm with
a slight upward tendency. Traveling men
just in from the we t report the prospect *
for a good season's trade excellent and say
that country merchants are prosperous and
will buy largely within a month.
The following are the only changes reported -
ported in the market to-day :
Green butchers' bides Jo.

DAVID DAVIS' ANXIETY.
How the Loto Soantor Tried to Avoid
Hldlnfr on Crowded Blovators ,
WAHUINOTON , March 31. The Star
says ox Senator David Davis realizes
that his ponderous weight la an
olomoiit of danger , requiring "eternal
vigilance" to guard againat a possible
crash. He IB as careful about putting
his foot forward win ro the ground la
unknown to an elephant , and la
always exceedingly nervous when
riding in olevatora. He never
wanted anybody else In with him
when golug up or down In the senate ,
but If there wea a crowd ready to
enter the senator would atand back
and wait for the next trip rather than
risk his three hundred and odd pounds
with a number of passengers. Ho
would push Into the car hurriedly and
aay to the conductor : "Now do go
right on ; don't wait for anybody
olao , " If ono of the bells
rang ho would watch the con
doctor by the arm and Ray , Implor
ingly ; ' 'Djn't take anybody else on
It la positively dangerous , yon know. .
The thing might break down. " Thi
aonatoro know of Judge Davis" nor
vouaneas , and aomo of them used to
fallow In a group and crowd In will
htm to enjoy his anxiety and the ex
pression of relief with which ho wonli
stop out of the car at last.
