A Congressman Telia Some Secrete At > out the Game In Washington. A Washington correspondent writes as follows ; "Senator Tom Bowen , of lolorado , is the best poker player wo lave in town. Why , the second night 10 was hero , Plnmb , of Kansas , and Jones' of Nevada , sat down with him o a llttlo game , and 1 am told ho cooped the party t ? the extent of wenty or thirty thousand In half an lonr , bnt Bowen has loct moro than 10 has won dnrlng the last few /oars. Did Lapham plays occasionally , and so do Halo and Voat : bnt as to the others It would disgrace the game to nay they played at all. These are not : ho times we mod to harro when Grant was president. " "Is Arthur much of a player t" "Well , yea. I ROOBS ho is about as 'cagey' as nny of them. He will sit up all night over a game of poker , when nothing oluo in the world will hold his attention. " CHANDLER IS A BEARP ONE , too , and I undorotand that he and DongroBsman 'Dick' Crowley are about the most export iu that not. " "What Bet ? " "Why , the white h'ouso not. They toll mo thai they play it 'blind , ' in deference to Arthur's wishes , and thia has been the most popular way of running the game here this season. In the 'draw' game there is a little chance for skill , bnt 'blind' poker , in which yon don't draw at all , Is the most outrageous form of gambling but , ot course , you know all about "Who are the best poker players in the house. " "Joe Blackburn can deal the paste boards with as much graoo and celerity as any man I know of , and will back his hand to almost any limit. Young Walker , of Pennsylvania , -commonly known as a daisy cutter , and Springer , of Illinois , swears by the jack of clnbs The western men are by far the best card playors. I thluk Tona Tonntr'of Cincinnati , and ox-governor of Ohio , is about as smart a ono as over sat down to a poker aimo in Washington and the man who can bluff him dnt of a hand has to cot up pretty early in the morning. But the poker playing here just now Is nothing to what it was nt Albany when Botz Tweed ruled the deck. DEAD OR ALIVE ; A Colored Man's Body Keeps Warm for Five Days After Death * Philadelphia Prc < 9 , Feb. 27th. The body of Anthony Lewis , a col ored man , has been lying for six days at his residence , 20 South Forty-sec end street , in a state of apparent sus pended animation. A week ago to-day ho attended an entertainment at Monnt Piagah A. M. E. Church , Locust , above For loth atreet , nna In the midst of it dropped dead. Ho was taken to his residence , where ho lived with his Bister , and the coroner waa summoned. Ho gave the usual ver dict of heart disease and departed , giv ing or < l rn for the bcruU of the body. On Wednesday nn nndottuker was called , bnt hu rofaaoa to have anything to do with the cuao , Haying that the man was not dead , Thia atrango an nouncement lomindod the sister of a strange speech that Lewis had made to her u week before. "In a llttlo while , " said ho ; "I shall die , and yet I ahall not bo dead , I shall como to lifo again , but shall not live long. In a few days after I Bhall really die. " The man really had bnt the appear ance of a man in a peaceful Bleep , The color of his lips remained natural , and In addition to thia , the animal heat remained In the body. This was conclusive evidence that the man had hot departed this Jlfo. Friends of the anpposod dead man tnpt constant watch and tried all man ner of tricks that are commonly sup posed to decide whether the spark of life Is extinct or not. A mirror was held before the lips of the "suspect , " and some of the credulous and excited - cited negroes insisted that moisture really did gather on the glass. Pins were driven Into the man's flesh , but he moved not. Some of the neigh bors suggested that they got some of the doctors at the university to come and apply an electric battery ; bnt the sister became highly excited at the idea. "I don't ' wont any ob dem student follow to practice on my brud- dor , " said she. "Ho said ho would como to life , 'n If ho will , don der ain't no need of 'loctriclty. " So eh o remained firm and allowed no physicians near her sacred dtad , Saturday was finally decided on for the interment , bnt when the day arrived the body was still warm and as natural as lifo. No odor whatever could bo detected. Several officers of the Twenty first district viewed the alleged corpse , and found It still warm. The poor ristor was nearly worn one by the constant watching , as aho had hardly left the side of the body in all thattimo. Whan yoatorday came the body seemed to bo quite cold at last , and It was decided to remove It to the house of the man's wife in Salem , N. J. Bonldos , the other people living In the honso began to object to the corpse being loft so long iu the build ing.So So a co f I'm was procnrcd and the body waa placed therein. A dinner- bell was placed in the Inanimate hand so that In case ho came to life ho might attract attention to his unfortnnato condition. The coffin lid was partly fastened , the body was loaded on a wagon and taken to the Market Street Ferry , where they wore to go by the West Jersey railroad to the homo of the wife. Ono of the bystanders re marked that she gnossod that if any thing would wako him np the jolting of that wagon would. It was the in- entlon of the friends who accompa nied the corpse to Salem to give it a burial unless It showed signs of lifo. Free of Charge.
