Mr. O'Kcofo said that h'o presented the resolution in order to find ont what there was in the report that cur tain mombera of the council know oi matters , which , If true , would ehow that the city waa bettor 'off without the aorvlooa of a detective than with thorn. thorn.Mr. Mr. Baker deprecated iho bringing up of the subject , aa it would renew the old troubles in regard to the police force , which .had been settled with ao much difficulty. . Mr. Behm made the assertion thai aa the thing stands nobody can gel the appointment as doteotlvo , which la made by the mayor , unlosa it waa upon the recommendation of the mar shal , and that meant "some ono who would 'stand in * with the marshal and divide. " Ho. charged the city doteotlvo with having refused to work up evidence in some particular oases and they hat to fall back on the police. Ho also charged that in a certain oaao ho had demanded a big commis sion for the recovery of a suit of stolen clothe * . In this Mr , Bohm evidently referred to the case In which the two youngi men were arrested , indicted for grand larceny bv the last grand jury and on being brought into the district courl were allowed to plead guilty to potll larceny. Trro members of the grand jury were councilman and got onto the matter in this way. , Mr. ' O'Koofo tmid ho had heard of anoh chargea and'referred to a former city detective who wanted toputblooc in a certain man'a clothes In order to convict him cf the murder of Col. Watson B. Smith. Mr. Oorby thought the proper way to proceed would be to auk the mayor to Investigate the character of the man ho appointed city detective. Mr , Leoder favored having another investigation and some more fun. Ho favored giving every man a chance for his life , and the city detective ought to bo given a fair show and an investi gation On the vote being called , Mr. Dun ham explained his vote , saying that the speeches had , some of them , been ridiculous , and denied aorno of the charges. Ho voted no. Mr. Herman voted no because , 'co far as he know , the charges wuro al" based on hearsay. Mr. L'joder voted ho because every thing had been working ao harmonious ly , they ought toi be loft alono. ( [ n the language of Artomua Word , UN. B. Thla ia sarkoam. " ) Mr. Oorby also voted no without any remarks , us ho ia a man of few words. The resolution to dispense with the salary of the doteotlvo waa carried by a vote of aovon to four. TUB OTIIEtt S1DK. The city marshal and city detective do not appear to bo at all oxorolaec over the charges , and the latter aaya in regard to the suit of clothes that the man from whom they were stolen offered him $15 if ho would recover hia property. Ho ( the olty doteotlvo' apent eight dollars ont of hla own pocket in the effort to do ao and the man refused to oven ro-lmburao * him for that. Ho pronouncea the whole charge ridiculous. Tbe Testimony In His Case Ttma far Favorable to Him. The trial of Perry Shot well for the shooting of Henry EberJy , waa bognn in the district court yesterday morn ing , but nothing dorio beyond eropau uelling a jury until afternoon. Last evening tho4 prosecution hac got in all the evidence for the state and it waa deemed co favorable for the defense that hiu counso talked of not introducing any evidence whatever in hia bebuif. I la probable , however , that they wil introduce several witnesses this morn ing , and the caao will bo concluded to-day. The testimony does not vary materially torially f com the account of the shoot- lug published at the time , aud tonda to proving the theory of self-defense advanced by defendant's counsel Among the witnesaou to come to-day la Robert Gregg , sheriff of Dodge nounty , who witnessed the atreet nght from tbo sidewalk , and stood very near the parties when the fatal shot waa fired.
