Saturday Evening , February 24. J
Tha wholesale trade of the city for the
past week wai reported aa moderate in
moat lines , being mostly on mall order ac
count' , and a more restricted feeling pre
vails than usual at this season. Nothing
new waa developed In dry goods , clothing ,
millinery , boots and shoei , etc. Trade re
in dn * quiet , with prices nominally steady.
The grocery market showed some anima
tion ; quite an active demand existed for
such staples M sugar , coffee , rice , fish and
cut meats , at advanced quotations. Busi
ness in the produce line was fairly active
under the Influence of milder weather ,
bringing forward considerable stnfl that
o tuld not. be handled , .during the , cold
weather. We note the arrival of Bermuda
tomatoea. This Is the earliest they ever
made their appearance In this market.
They sold.at.92 00 perjjox. The move
ment in potatoes was quite general , both
on local and shipping account , and pricea
obtained were fnlly up to quotation ) . In
apples we note a good inquiry for local
consumption , a * the stocks laid In for win
ter are nearly exhausted , No change in
prices only a better demand , The egg
market has been very limited , and 40 centa
was the prevailing price until yesterday ,
when they dropped lo 35 cents. Should
open weather continue , prices will decline
rapidly. Butter continues very dull , and
lower prices prevail ; no shipping demand ,
aud but limited local inquiry. There wat
a good trade in fresh fuh and oyster * , ot
account of the Lenten'season , still the demand
mand for oysters is on the decline. Re
celpta of poultry continue light ; there Is sc
little coming In that a change In quota
tions CAunot be made. Oranges and lem
ons are moving quite briskly , owing to thi
very low prices. Of course the demand fo
lemons U not what It will be , but a fat
demand noted for the eeaaon. Game of ol
kinds U about of market , aud not quota
ble. There Is still a good local demand fo
celery , but must soon cease. The flou
market baa taken quite an upward louden
cy , In sympathy with wheat , especial ]
among the leading brands , which are hel
at an advance of 25@50 centa per 100 Ibe
. Bran Is scarce at 814 per ton in car lote
The total number ot bogs received durln
the week was 75 cars , packers paving 80 4
for good.

market to-day are as follows : Carbo

Judge Mlllor on Madnira
Speaking of wines nnd dinners , I
urn reminded of what I shall have to
call the "Old Madeira dodgo. " There
U no roMou Philadelphia should
know anything about It , for there is
no pretense lu Philadelphia , The
Yenorrlngs do not Hvo time. Yon
mast know , Mr. Editor , that the
indues of the supreme court are the
highest of the high la social 11 fo.
There are only nine of them. They
are in for life , and et 910,000 a year
aplooo. They , of course , are Invited
everywhere -generally In a body a
practice which they hate llko a fam
ine. Yon canoaslly see the reason.
Kaoh has his stock ot iokes and
stories , hli illustrations , his history ,
hlc recollections and his big cases.
Each ono has told these over and ovtr
again , and they Individually have heard
tha same thins from'thelr brothers of
the bunnh for so many yean that the
thing affect * them like their thirtieth
quail. But this Is a Madeira story :
L remember heating Mr. Jnitloo Mil
ler recount his experience withthe , old
Madeira fiend. Ho aald that ono of
the first thhga he noticed In social life
in Washington won the existence of a
large amount of fine , rich , old Madei
ra in this olty. He would qo with
his associates to the house of a leadIng -
Ing lawyer. Before the dinner was
over , the host would say tha ho had
some Madeira he would like to have
his "guosta tasu nothing llko It In
the country only a few bottles loft ,
the present a great occasion and ono
bottle cjnlto enough to go round. Next
he would dine with a cabinet officer
same old story Qentlomon , lot me bog
you to try this old Madeira nothing
like It In the world an old Invoice of
my grandmother's never to get a
glass full like it In your life , wonder
ful , gentlemen , wonderful I beg you
to try It. The court goes next to a
senator' * ho7se , The dinner , gentle
men , has not boon worthy of the occa
sion , but I have something that wil
nuke you feel glad you came. It is a
glass of old Madeira 400.000 years
old. I'll toll yon how I got hold of It.
Some years ago I obtained for a young
man an appointment in the navy ; he
felt very grateful and wanted to know
what ho could do for mo. T
told him , just as ho was golug to sail
to got me some good Maderia. Gun
tlcmun , ho was ton years getting me
this wine. Ho bad to pay $200 a bet
tie for it , and sven at this price was
only able to got a few bottlos. Yon'l
find It worth drinking , gentlemen
This sort of thing lasted fur a year o :
two. Every house into which th
judito went had some celebrated olc
Madoria. I don't know how It was
with the other judges , but Mlllor , whenever
never pretends to know anything , ant
is noted for his level-headed common
sense , and is as great a hater of shams
as I ovorsavr , became very tired of th
old Maderia butlnoes , and only waited
for an opportunity to proclaim hi
ideas. It oamo in time.
Andy Johnson was president , and
G. H. Browning , of Illinois , was sec
retary of the Interior. Browning was
a fussy old fellow , with ruQK'd shirt *
and dignified manner. He lived very
nicely and very quietly on Georgetown
Heighti. He asked the judge * to
dinner. They came Good dinner.
At the proper time old Browning de
manded the attention of his gnosti.
lie Bald that he did not often comment
on the things he set before his guest * .
He thought it vulgar , but he had
something BO rare he thought hn
might be excused. [ Then Miller knew
that Madeira was coming. ] In fact ,
he wanted to call the' attention of hU
friends to some rare old Madeira ho
had smooth as oil , and fit for the
gods. He had obtained It from some
bankrupt king or prince , and there
was nothing llko it in the world.
Gentlemen , said ho , lot ns taste
U. Aa I have said , nobody
in the world hates a sham more
than Miller , and he could not stand
the Maderia basinets any longer , so he
nald : "Now , llrownlog , look hero.
Wo have had too much of this d d
Maderia business. Wo have not been
In a house in Washington for the last
throe years that the finest class of
finest old Madoria In the world has
not boon'sot btforo ns , and the thing
Is getting a little tiresome
Now , Browning , you are from
Qalnoy , 111. , and I am from
Keokuk , lovn. Neither of iu
know a d d thlnR about Madeira ,
and both of un had rather have pooz
whisky without comment than the
fluoat of Madeira with ouoh fulsome
commendation. Put your Madeira
utldo. and lot's have a t-Inss of whin-
ky , " That little opoech was nolsot !
abroad , and , strange to say , It vurj
properly stopped hosts from remind
Ing gueata what great attention vrui
being shown them , ospecla'ly ' as t (
Madeira.
