OMAHA MAKK.Sr8.
Wholesale Prloea.
Ornos or TUB OMAHA BBC , 1
Saturday Evening , February 24 , f
Tha wholesale trade of the city for the
past week wai reported aa moderate in
moat lines , being mostly on mail order ao
count , and a more restricted feeling pre
vails than usual at this season. Nothing
new was developed in dry goods , clothing ,
millinery , boots and shoes , etc. Trade re :
mUm quiet , wltb prices nominally steady.
The grocer/ market showed some anlma
Uon ; quite an aotlre demand existed for
such staples as sugar , coffee , riee , fish and
cnt meats , at advanced quotations. Busi
ness in the produce line was fairly active
under the influence of milder weather ,
bringing forward considerable stuff that
o uld not be handled .during the cold
weather. We note the arrival of Bermuda
tomatoes. This Is .the earliest they ever
made their appearance" In this market.
They sold , at $2 00 perjjor. The move
ment in potatoes was quite general , both
on local and shipping account , and prices
obtained were fully up to quotations. In
apples we note a good Inquiry for local
consumption , as the utocks laid In for win
ter are nearly exhausted. No change in
prices only a better demand. The egg
market has been very limited , and 40 cents
was the prevailing price until yesterday ,
when they dropped to 35 cents. Should
open weath * : continue , prices will decline
rapidly. Butter continues very dull , and
lower prices prevail ; no shipping demand ,
and but limited local inquiry , There was
a good trade in fresh fish and oysters , on
account of the Lenten season , still the do *
mand for oysters is on the decline. Re
ceipts of poultry continue light ; there is so
little coming In that H change In quota
tions cannot be made. Orai es and lem-
ona are moving quite briskly , owing to the
very low prices. Of course the demand foi
lemons la not what It will be , but a fall
demand noted for the eeaeon. Game of all
kinds li about of market , aud not quota
ble. There is still a good local demand foi
celery , but must soon cease. The floui
market has taken quite an upward tenden
cy , In sympathy with wheat , especial ) ;
among the leading brands , which are helc
at an advance of 25@50 cenla per 100 Ibs
Bran la scarce at $11 per ton in car lots
The total number of hogs received duriu ;
the week was 75 cars , packers paying 86 4i
for good.
The only ehangai reported in th
market to-day are as follows : Carboi
oil declined Jo | llaaeed oil advanced le
Omaha white lead d ollaed Jo.

Speaking of wlnea nnd dinners , I

matt know , Mr. Editor , that the
indues of the supreme court are the
highest of the hl h in social lifo.
There are only nine of them. They
are In for Ufa , and get 910,000 a year
aplooo. They , of course , are invited
everywhere 'generally In a body a
practice which they hate llko R fam
ine. Yon can.oaslly BOO the reason.
Kaoh has his stock of jokes and
stories , his illnstratious , his history ,
his recollections and his big coses.
Each ono has told those over and over
again , and they Individually have hoard
the same thlnq from tholr brothers of
the bunnh for so many years that the
thing affects them Ilka their thirtieth
quail. But this Is a Madeira story :
I remember healing Mr , Justice Mil
ler reoonnl his experience with tha old
Madeira fiend , lie said that ono of
the first thlogs he noticed in social life
in Washington waa the existence of a
large amount of fine , rich , old Madei
ra in this city. He would go with
his associates to the house of a leadIng -
Ing lawyer. Before the dinner was
over , the host would say tha ho had
some Madeira ho would llko to have
his "gneats taso nothing llko It in
the country only a few bottles loft ,
the present a great occasion and ono
bottle quite enough to go round. Next
he would dine with a cabinet officer
same old story Geutlomon , let me bog
you to try this old Madeira nothing
like It in the world an old Invoice of
my grandmother's never to get a
glass full like it in your life , wonder
ful , goutlemen , wonderful I beg you
to try It. The court goes next to a
senator' * horse , The dinner , gentle
men , has not boon worthy of the occa
sion , but I have something that will
make you feel glad you came. It is a
glass of old Madeira 400,000 years
old. I'll toll yon how I got hold of it.
Some years ago I obtained for a young
man an appointment In the navy ; ho
felt very grateful and wanted to know
what ho could do for mo. I
told him , just as ho was going to sail ,
to get mo some good Maderla. Gen
tlemen , ho was ten years getting me
this wine. He had to pay $200 a hot-
tie for it , and avon at this price was
only able to got a few bottles. You'll
find It worth drinking , gentlemen
This sort of thing lasted for a year or
two. Every hooso into which the
judge wont had some celebrated old
Madoria. I don't know how It was
with the other judges , but Miller , whenever
never pretends to know anything , and
is noted for his level-headed common
sense , and is as great a hater of shams
as I ever saw. became very tlrod of the
old Maderia butlnots , and only waited
for an opportunity to proclaim his
ideas. It came in time.
Andy Johnson was proaldont , and
G. H , Browning , of Illinois , was sec
retary of the Interior. Browning was
a fussy old fellow , with ruflK'd shirts
and dignified manner. He lived very
nicely and very quietly on Georgetown
Heights. Ho asked the judges to
dinner. They came Good dinner.
At the proper time old Browning de
manded the attention of his guests.
lie said th t he did not often comment
on the things he set before his guests.
He thought it vulgar , but he had
something so rare he thought fan
might bo excused , [ Then Miller knew
that Madeira was coming. ] In fact ,
he wanted to call the attention of his
friends to some rare old Madeira he
had smooth as oil , and fit for the
gods. He had obtained It from some
bankrupt king or prince , and there
was nothing like It in the world.
Gentlemen , said ho , lot as taste
it. Aa I have said , nobody
In the world hates a sham more
than Miller , and he could not stand
the Maderla business any longer , so he
aid : "Now , Drowning , look hero
Wo have had too much of this d d
Maderla business. Wo have not been
in a house in Washington for tbo last
throe years that the finest glass of
finest old Madoria in the world haa

Is getting a little tiresome
