The fire waa firat discovered by

Ho took refuge iu the ntroot and cried
"firo" in a sonorous voico. The cry
was taken up by others and pasted

the whole family
MADE GOOD T1IEIK KSOAl'K.
The lUmoa burned fiercely and great
columns cf black amoko poured
through the windows and rolled away
to the northwest. The bright moon
light made the whole eoono distinctly
visible , and It looked as If there was
small chances for naving the drug
stock. The basement story cf Mo-
Mahon & Abort's place was filled
with paints and oils , the
first floor with patent medicines ,
essential oil * , etc. On the second
floor wns n compartment in the rear
with tbo liquors and the front and
third floor were stocked with light
and
HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE GOODS.
The firn at firat oooraod to rage on
the firat floor and in the front of the

story of Wirth'a place. The three
hose companies were all on hand and
poured Htoady stream * Into the burn-
inga buildings but fire soon reached
the roar of tbo drug itoro and had to
bo ( ought both from Douglas street
and the alloy. The fitemon were not
numerous enough to handle the hose ,
and many private oltlzabs soon turned
in and aided m&torlally. When the
fire reached the attic , which extends
through the whole block , U made a

actors and ladles of the Academy of

ruled with despotic away on every
floor. About this time the hydrant
at the corner of Thirteenth and Dong-

water supply looked bad.
A CHANOK OK 1IYIWANTH
was made and work returned again ,
but the hose was handled lu several
Instances by tyros and the water
wasted on the walls. A few minutes
later the fire burst through the walls
into Meyer & lloapko'a establishment ,
and although the removal of goods
was begun at once , the deluge ot
water poured in did a vast amount of
damage and the French plato
glass windows went in like tissue pa
per. The wind , which had been from
the oonthoaot , began to rlso and the
rest of the occupants of the weat end

the utmost pride and elation that I
would rlo to ro > pond to that toast if
bnt the feeble tongue could give ex

songs amid the heath-covered hills of
Bonnie Scotland. My own ancestors'

remembrance would know no bounds.
To judge from the character of the
works of Barns it would eoem that ho
possessed two distinct and separate
uatnroa , aa it were , as different from
each other aa though they existed in
distinct and separata Individuals. Tbo
one strongly oharactomad by gloom
and melancholy , the other by cheer
- and hilarity.
, The spirit of the former , however ,
waa largely prcdoinlneut , and If , in
deed , ho ever grow mirthful , aa ho In
dulged in the gravities of the aocUl
hour , it was only to bo again beset by
those feelings of gloom and despair aa
ho seemingly contemplated the bar-
, rasslng problems of his lowly destioy.
And , indeed , many times hia mirth
and gaiety were only feigned. For
ho says himself , when after an occa
sion at which he had evinced a spirit
. of gaiety :
"You think I'm glad ; oh , I pay wool
For a' the joys I borrow
In solitude there , then I feel
I canna to-nigbt conceal
My deeply rankln' "sorrow. "
So lot these who may to-night toast
- him for his mirth and humor ; aa for
mo , in ray hnmblo tribute to hia mem
ory , I love to dwell rather upon those
monrnful phases of his lifo during the
dark hour of which ho penned the
warmest ( ffoalona of the heart that
made himself at once the world'o great
friend and Sootland'a beloved pet.
Hubert Burno , as 1 well known , did
not poaecss many of the advantages of
, learned art , but unacquainted with the
menna of producing poetry by rnlo ho
, nang the sontimonta nnd manners as
he airr them in himself and hia rustic
compiniona around him. The loves ,
the crlefa , the hopes , the fears , thu
jiys , the torrowo of hia nntlvo land
must f jrth in aong , and poetic geniua
alnno inspired the artless notca.
"Ths simple bard , unbroken to rules of
art ,
Ho pours the wild effusions of the heart ,
Anil if lusplrod 'tis nature's powers Inspire ; ,
Hen nil the melting thrill and hera tbe
kindling fire. "
And a distinguishing feature of hia >
pooma ia that wherever ho saw and
Lit the extent of errors and evils of
ofal
the day , cither in religious , political >
or aociul world , ho employed his ready
. ninae to give expression to his ridi
n cule , hiu Bympnthy or hia wrath.
In the religious world ho aiw the
hypocrisy of that claes of people who ,
clothed in the robes of righteousness ,
themselvoj ian nothing but faults and
follioa in their neighbor' * acts , and
: after stripping from tlioiu the mark
of Pharoahsalcal jiioly ho announced
lu the following advice , which ia cal
culated to cngravo itself on cvcij
heart the s irit cf tiuo Christian
charity.
1 Then gently acan your brother man ,
Still gentler slater woman ;
Though they may Rang a kenntn wrong ,
To itep aside it human. "
In the social world he saw the
tioAt
haughty nobleman and lord tcorn nl
honcat poverty , and ho boldly dlsciitn-
Inatod on the side of right between
titled fimo and sterling worth aa ho
sang his aoug :
"A man's a man for a * that :
1'hc rank Is but tbe guinea's stamp ,
The man's tbe gowd for a' that.
He took a view of the picture of
hntnnn life at > ho behold It exemplified
before him , and ho saw the rich and
powerful on every hand oppress the
poor and weak ; ho BOW fat a few
seemed favorites of fate , whllo thons1
anda labored to support their pride ;
ho saw the ill'iiutchecl pilr of
Ago and Want go down life's
* eary road together ; in short , ho saw
"Man's Inhumanity to man
Make countless thouiands mourn , "
find In the dignity of hia manhood ho
aroao and propounded to the social
world a logical problem that ronuitjs
unanswered to-duy , and it la eafo to
aay will remain unanswered to the end
of time , notwithstanding the hard fact
that wo live iu dally contact with it
abnao.
"If I'm dcpigned your landlord' * tilave ,

Again , Robert Burns waa n poet of
the home , the fireside and thu field
And bin "Cotter's Siturday Night , "
which alone la anfiiciont to make hfa

celebrated poem , "Hallowe'en , " have
served to place in overrating remembrance

What shall wo any of those countless
goma of love and tenderness that fill
the volume of his aona ?
It is for them the poet claims a
modest tribute to hia worth , and it is
for them , to-night , wo Bound hia high-

land's ' tears bedew hia silent grave ,
and it is for them all nation's pay
