Some Account of the Horooa Who
Sleep Tlioro.
I orrrjxmdcnpo | KanfMCIIy Jouninl.
Last Sunday I did not po to church ,
as usanl ; a gruvo Iroable brooded over
my mind , and 1 concluded to sock
surcoAno from sorrow in the eolitudo
of Evurgrcou comotcrj- ,
LEAUVILLE'S SILENT CITY or THK HEAD
Instead of the pious platitude * ,
preached over and over again , I pro-
f erred , on this beautiful and sunshiny
Sunday [ morning , to commune tot a
brit f moment with naturoj and draw
lessons of instruction , as well as ro
lled on the vanity of life , which it ,
after all , a Hooting oho IT , from the
stories told on the tombs of Load *
villo's illustrious dead.
In this picturesque plot of ground ,
' beautifully located , and covered with
a luxuriant growth of well trimmed
shade trees , ropcmo the remains of
hundreds of distinguished Londvil-
liana , many ot whom went out of this
wicked world by a forced march , time
not oven being allowed to uio the over
handy bootjack.
lioro they lay before mo qnito pro
miscuous like , und undisturbed by
thoughts of "bowios" and "Runs , "
and memories of mntlnoea in which
tnoy tcok a brilll ut nui eneanguinod
part.
part. They evidently slept well , for if they
know that a silly youth WAS around
ready to dcbucrato their hat resting
places with lovlty , and cast caus'.ic
comments on their untimely taking
oils , " their b'unoa would fairly rattle in
their cotlins , and I would doubtlots
soon bo strongly encased in some skel
eton's ghastly grip.
With uncovered head I knelt down
before an uncovered shaft , on which
was inscribed those sad , sad words :
"Our Jimmy li In Heaven. "
I say "aad" because if Jimmy ia in
heaven , and proudly wearing impels
plnmos , I don't ' want to go there when
I die not by a row of apple trees.
Jimmy went out of this wild nnd
wicked world in a blaze of flory , with
rod light accompaniments , nnd the cor
oner aaid the following day , that ho
was only able to find eleven bullet
holes in hla Adonis like frame , which
was duly punctured by our patriotic
citizana who preferred that the saintly
Jimmy should leave this earthly ophoro
his career of cruelty having already
caused him , always , howoyor , in the
painful discharge of n doliunto duty ,
to cut short ( ho lives of seven of Col
orado's chief citizana.
A little beyond I noticed n darling
of a grave surmounted by a small
white stone , on which the inscription
road :
"Gono to Join the Angels. "
Lyintr five foot below this comfort
ing nnggoutiou. rested all that was loft
of Jack Murphy , bettor known in this
bailiwick as Doc .Murphy.
The doctor , although his hands
were stained with the blood of n dozen
men , professed to bo an upright
Christian , and took part in various re
ligious exorcises. .Ho was ouo of
those jovial , well fed And rounded out
gentlemen of the border who live by
iheir wits , and would not hcsituto u
moment to down a man to his death
ic u - - .Iraf' ntrtA > - J v _ > i.1 ,
This alleged desciplo of Esculapius
always preserved a polished and
peaceful exterior. Ho looked for oil
the world like an piled and curled
Assyrian bull , and prided himself on
his Apollo-ltko appearance , but he
drew his little "gun" once too often ,
and the clttzanc at once furniuhed the
undertaker with a job. Ho looked
nice in hia ccflln.
Slowly picking my way throngh a
cluster ot bushes I stumbled on a
plain shaft , which bore the words :
"Ho Sleeps Well. "
Hridontly rcfeiring to the Innocent
gentleman beneath. This was the
bold and lamented Bill Brown , hotter
known as "tho bad man from Koko-
mo , " n village up the mountains.
In the heyday of Leadvillo's pros ,
perity , when the great carbonate dis
coveries m do life a fever of excite
ment , Bill Brown swoopnd down on
us like a wolf on the fold , and began
his work of destruction by swinging a
brace of "navies" right and lett , let
ting them "bark" at appropriate in
tervals , to the immediate discomfort
of Eoveral estimable gentlemen , who
wore not desirous of leaving this tor-
restlal ball without making proper
preparation * , and who , if their uplrits
could speak , would not glvo x very
complimentary opinion of the facetious
gentleman who sent them so suddenly
into another world.
The mad career of this hurricane of
wrath , bettor known us Brown , wan
checked short by n valiant knight of
the star , and the "bad man1' was hot-
tied up and placed under the cold ,
cold ground.
The next tombstone that caught my
urgus eye was the one that contained
a long list of virtues inrerlbed on ite
snowy white form , which were evi
dently pofgotssd by the ono whose
name they followed ,
JACK M'DONALII
hurst upon us like a brillUnt moteoi
fresh fiom the aorollto regions , ant
concluded to dszz'o the public mint
by the brilliancy ot his actions , and
for a day or two , the etherial visiot
ran things with a hiph hand.
At a necktie sociable hold shortlj
aftcrwardu Mr. McDonald was thi
central figure , nnd lent piquancy an <
Hpice to the festive occasion by th
graceful manner in which ho mad
his sad but unwept exit from thi
world of caro.
What is this I see before me } O ,
the surface of the immuculato marbl

lion rampant. The former ovldontl ;

In the palmy days of Lcadville
when human life WBS held cheap , am
we had a freeh corpse for breakfw

not ctcApo his terrible wrath , and the
corptes began to pile up thick and
fast.
Stepping into the Miners' exchange ,
whore Hilly McArdlc , n well-known
Kansas City boy , was butily cng.tged
behind the bar , the defiant desperado
comnuudud htm to sot up the drink ] ,
Atul ottered to settle the bill by asking
Billy to gtr.j up the dark clumbers of
an ugly nnd murderous looking "oun. "
An altercation followed , the bad nun
otortcd to shuot , but a well directed
bullet from McArdto's pistol laid the
rutlinn at rest.
Retracing my way from the first
milestone in Jill's journryjo hades , I
soon cama actots a tomb on which was
carved the classic narno of
"Samuel Soott. "

Temperance
Is not signing a pledge
or taking a solemn oath that
cannot be kept , because of
the non-removal of the cause
liquor. The way to make
a man temperate is to kill
the desire for those dreadful
artificial stimulants that car
ry so many bright intellects
to premature graves , and
desolation , strife and un-
hnppincss into so many
families.
