many that the price of fresh meats will
advance to n ich a point that it can no
longer bo generally used by the poor.
A sonio what Botisntional report was
publ'uhcd ' a few weeks ago in ono of
the Now York paport to the effect that
the maximum production of meal had
been reached in naver l countries iu
Europe , and that the limit ot moat
production had almost boon reached
in this country. The author affirmed
that several ot the states did not now
produce moat enough to supply their
own people , and that soon other states
would bo compelled to obtain moat
from a distance. It was represented
that farmers generally throughout the
country kept all the moat-produolnir
animals their lands could carry , and
that the great plains of the west and
onth were becoming cerored with
flocks and herds. Iu the opinion ot
the writer the population ot the coun
try would soon bo doubled , whllo the
number of cattle , cheep and pigs would
not be largely Increased. The predic
tion was made that wo should soon be
obliged to stop the exportation of
moat , and that wo should Had it ex
tremely difficult to produce enough for
the supply of our own people , In
other words , a moat famine was pre
dicted for the country that had al
ways had moat in abundance. The
famine predicted is of a remarkable
kind. It Is not to bo the result cf a
failure of forage nnd grain crops or of
sickness among flocks and herds. It
is totako place in consequence of the
inability to produce moat enough to
supply a frsi Increasing population
oven under favorable citcjmstancea of
ooasocfl and health. It is to endure
not for a limited period , but for nil
time.
It is evident that the author of the
article referred to has not considered
the subject an carefully as ho should ,
and has not obtained all the informa
tion ho might have procured. It is
not true that all the moat-producing
animals are now kept on farms in the
states longest eottlod that might be
supported , Up to the proient time
animals In this country have boon kept
almost entirely on grass and ccrn. It
requires n largo amount of land to
raise onongh of thcso to support a
given number of animals. In t near
future more attention will bo given to
tbo production of root crops , of which
* larger amount of food can bo pro
duced from the same amount of land.
More cottott-soed and flax-seed meal
will be employ nd In feeding stock. By
the judicious use of ensilage it Is likely -
ly that the cattle population of the en
tire states can and will bo doubled.
Neither is it true that the great plains
are now covered with flocks and herds.
It Is likely that the number of cattle
and sheep on them will increase four
fold within a short time. They will
receive much better care and attention
than they now do , and will have in ad
dition some shelter from the atorms
and some harvested food. The ani
mals will not bo scrubs or "natives. "
They will , be full-bloods or at least
high grades. . They will eat no more
food than inferior animals , but will

classes ) of meat producing animals.
Three-year-old beeves weigh as much
as 5 year-old beeves did a few yoara

of feeding is also baing practiced.
The old settled countries have but

partially settled. More has bcon
accomplished during the laat five
years in the employment of other an-
lijoptics than salt for preserving moat ,
in the use of n cold temperature and
the vacuum for preventing decomposi
tion , and In devising moans for rupid
transportation than during all the
