TRANSIT OF VENUS.
The Observations at Sherman by
a U , P ,
Official Report to Hon. Thomas
L. Ktmball.
It will bo romembflrcd that Mr.
JamcB Bllcker.adetfer , chief engineer
of the Union Pacific railroad , wasiont
to Sherman , Wyoming , to make ob
oervntions of the transit of Venus.
Ho was fully provided with instru
ments for the work , but the day
proved cloudy nnd unfavorable. The
oflisiul report , received at the Union
Pacific headquarters , vrai ns follows :
SIIEKMAK , December 8.
Thomas tKlmball , Ass itant General Manager
Union Pacific hallway , umaha :
The observations of the transit ot
Venus at thlo place yesterday wore
only partially uucctstful. The horns
at the point of sunned was ninety and
u half dogrtos from the zanith , nnd I
expected to BOO the sun rsu with
Venus somewhat znoro than half itn
diameter upon thu southeastern limb
of the sun. In this I was dlsap-
polntod. At sunrise thu oky was al
most entirely overcast with clouds.
There was only n very narrow strip
of comparatively open sky in thu ex
treme edge of the horizon , allowing a
lusro glimpao of the nun at itn rising ,
but the titnioaphero was so unsteady
and wavering that no distinct outline
of the sun's limb could be soon. In
deed I can compare its appear-
auco to nothing but the
waves of the ocean rolling
and tumbling in an uniutermltting
series of deep hollows and high eleva
tors. All my efforts to BCD the planet
were fruitless , and in a few moments
of time elapsing before the suu dis
appeared behind thick clouds I either
Tailed to got thu tulctcopo directed to
the proper point or was unable to dis
tinguish the plannt in the rolling
WHVUO of the sun's ' limbs. After
rising the sun continued obscuru for
Bomo time and when wo cuught the
linitvlorr tho. planet wan more than
its full diauioter'upon the sun. Until
ibout 10 n. m. the nun waa visible at
nterVcila under huge and light clouds ,
DUt nbout that time it became totally
obscured and thick clouds conlinutd
until near noon. I had given up
all hopes of szeing any more
of the r.tnait , and vrai prupiring to
dismount thu iuatrumonto nnd got
A way on the evening train whun I no
ticed the clouds begin to break. I
wont to the toloacopo and utter a time
caught a glimpco of the sun barely
diBtingulsbab'.o behind the clouds with
the planet about its diameter , from
the southwest limb of the sun. As the
time of their contact approached it
was at intervals sufficiently clear to
see the nun , and finally I began to
think I might be able to see the con
tact itself. In this I was successful ,
and wo raadoa satisfactory photograph
of this ono contact , the heavens being
soflhiontly clear to do so success
'
fully. While 'the planet was
passing off the sun It was at
times obscured by clouds , but at in
tervals plainly visible , and I hoped to
see the last external contact , but
failed. A few moments before the
true contact , while there was but the
merest nloho out of the edge of the
sun , it disappeared behind a thick
cloud , and when next seen , about two
minutes later , the planet was entirely
gono. The greatest disappointment
we experienced , next to tbo failure to
observe more than one contact , was
the failure of our clock , which makes
us dependent for time exclusively
upon a Jcrgeusen pocket chronome
ter and time signals from Washington.
The weather for the entire week
we were at Sherman was fearfully
windy , with an almost constantly
overclouded sky , and in nlmost every
way unfavorable for good or satisfac
tory observations. The thermometer
ranged almost or near the freezing
point until the morning of the transit ,
whnn it fell to twelve. I was assisted
by Mr. 0. 0. Van Arsdale , who also
observed the contact with a second
telecoopo , and by Messrs. H. IB. Patton -
ton , E. L. Wore , J. T. Arnold and
Isaac Hull , all of whom rendered val
uable oislstance. I Mio desire here
to thank you for courtesies extended
to inn in thir connection by yourself ,
the Union Pacific Railway company
and ita officers severally.

Special to Till BIB.
LINCOLN , Neb. , Decamber 1.
Owing to the extreme cold weather
the silver wedding of Dr. and Mrs.

not as largely attended as was ex
pected , but the affair was a pleasant
ono as it was , and about seventy-five
persons were present. Among the

and wife , Dr. Mercer cf Omaha , S.
C. Elliott and wife , W. J. Limb ,

The Appollo club , of this city , ren
dered some of ita finest selections ,
and the Capital City band , did its
best to make the affiir a pleasant ono.
An elegant repast was served at about
midnight. About $1,000 worth of
presents , mostly solid silver , were re
ceived by the happy couple. A beau
tiful bronze clock was presented by
the employes of the asylum. Mrs.
Mathewson/ ; ! presented the Dr
with a fine hunting case gold watch
with his monogram neatly engravec
on ono side and her's on the other ,
and the Dr. presented his wife with a
pair of diamond earrings , Had i
not been for the cold weather and the
fact that the asylum is located abou
three miles from town , thu attend
