Among the multitudes who h TO from time to time exposed the tricks and Impostnrei of so-called ipiritial mediums , there are fen who bare earned to inoch notice or money M th < * "thonght reader , " Stuart Cam- berlaud , whoso recent performance before a small party of well known gentlemen in this city was noticed in The Herald tome days wo. Ills sno cots in "thought roadlng on that oc oaslon was admitted by all present , and he yesterday addroisod himself to looking np vTotlms among the me * dlums. "I went , " ho told a Ilorald ro potter , "to the nouse of the first clairvoyant whoto ndrortlicmcnt I SAW In the morning paper. It proved to bo a Mine. , on Foartoonth street , and on ringing the bell I was at once admitted , together with gentleman who accornptnUd ma. The person who lot us lu looked Ilka a very slovenly housemaid , but on'asking for Mme , , ( ho laid that she thalporaon. "I tola Lor that I wanted to have a seanoe with her , and she at first re fused , saying that she did not BOO gentlemen tlomen excepting In the evening , Uorrcver , shs a&kcd mo to ( [ fold my hands , and when I did so she said she would see ma , as I folded my hands the right way. My companion , how oror , she refused to admit to the seance , aud oven refused to see him afterward. She led the way to au in ner room aud closed all the doors and promptly wont Into what she called a trance. Then she told mo the usual lot of nonsense about a dark woman aud a light woman , and said I would have a great deal of trouble aud would not bo married until late in life. I told her I was married already , and she said , 'Well , I told you you would have trouble , ' and when I said I hadn't any and cared Tor my wlfo she smtled. "Then she said she had of ton soon my face In her trances , and I asked her If she could toll my ntmo. She said no , because all that came to her lu trances parsed from her mind when she came out of the trance state. Then I asked her how she remembered my face , and sh said I was funny and too smart. She waa t'to commonest kind of a cheat and was not oven adroit enough to answer any questions. She wanted $10 and I gave her 75 cants. In company with the same gentle man Mr. Cumberland afterward called on Dr. Slado , but that celebrated medium waa out of town. Later In the day , however , ho mot a foomau worthy of his stool in the person of Mrs. Margaret Fox-Kane , ono of the original Fox sisters who Is said to have married Dr. Kane , the Arctic ox. ploror. M'8. Kno was brought by a friend to the Everett bouse , whore , not being Informed of the fact that she waa to bo "oxpoeod , " eho gave a soanco to sorno thirty persons who were present on Mr. Cumberland's in vitation to vfitncis her discomfiture. This , It is only fair to say , waa not witnessed. TUB HEANCB. Mrs. Kane seated herself at a table ( the marble-topped ono in the parlor being moved away and a wooden ono substituted ) , and the rapping which bos madojher name well-known - for the prst thirty years began. Then fol lowed the niual series of questions from ono and another In the ' 'circle , " and the replies oi the "spirits" came with the same old rat-tat which Is familiar to all who have visited spir itual seancos. Some of those ques tions ware declared to be correct by those who asked them , and mauy more were declared Incorrect. The Ittlng'ao far was In no way different from the ordinary one. The Herald reporter observed In an undertone to a lady who sat next to him ( who began to no frightened ) that there were at leeit two gentlemen In the room who could produce similar raps by trickery. Immediately the medium , who it is almost certain had not heard the remark , began writing with her loft hand. The paper being afterward hold to A mirror was found to have a message on It signed , "J. Wilkoa Booth , " saying that the sounds could not bo produced to sound like those made by the spirits , The re porter asked If the message was for him and the affirmative three raps sounded at once. Mr. Booth's statement proved to bo true ( If the raps from under the me dium dress were produced by spirits ) , for although Mr. Cumberland and the other gentlemen referred to , both produced very audible raps by "crack- In c their joints , " the sound was very different from these under Mrs. Kane's chair. Mr. Cumberland then , still without dlseloting himself to Mrs. Kane SY a professional "ox- poser , " but professing to bo ono who WDH interested in spiritualism , but who understood it , and was n disbo- Mover in it , asked Mrs. Kauo to sub mit to various tests , all o ? which were fair enough , though difficult , assum ing that Mrs. Kane was an impostor , Mrs. Kane , however , refused to un dertake nnohtcBtfi , aatho "conditions" ware not rinht , and , as she stoutly de clared thatiho did not produce the noises hireolf , there seemed to bo no common ground nn which the two could meet. Nearly all those pres ent then joined in a ducussion of tlio matter , which proved as fruitless as noli discussions always prove. Wet a Case.
