The stock market was devoid of any
special fcaturifl thin foicnoju , except
greater firmness than might htve been ex *
pooled in view of the continued uncertain *
ty about the prospects of the nottlement of
the railroad war. la the afternoon the
market was rather quiet and with only
fractional changes , though there were a
great variety of rumors about the pro * *
pools of the settlement of the railroad war ,
until the market wan middcnly depressed
by a reported dispatch in regard to sup
posed catting on Gould roods. Mr. Gould
is reported to have said late this afternoon
that there was no truth in the report that
'the dispatch referred to had beau received
from General Manager Olds , nnd that
there was no cutting and would be no cut
ting of rates on hi ) roads. It tieeuin ,
therefore , that the whole thing was con *
coctod tu break the market.
