Borrow that the venerable 1'cter
Cooper , whoso many bjnofactiona in
their bolmlf have endeared him to the
masses of working mon nnd women in
this country , la rapidly fulling in general -
oral strength nnd faculty. In the
ninety-second anniversary of hia birth ,
which was celebrated a few months
ngo with n quiet reception at his real-
donco on Laxington tvvcnao , to which
only a few old friends and relatives
were invited , ho was able lo attend to
his builuoss as usual , nnd had thnt
very day spent a conplo of hours at
his oflico superintending affairs , sign *
ing leases , etc. He remarked with n
smile to an acquaintance who ques
tioned him as to the habits and modes
of lifo thnt had combined to preserve
his physio l constitution and mental
faculties unimpaired comparatively at
such an advanced ago : "I always Gnd

KEBr ME 1IUSY ,
And to bo doing something for the
good of man or to keep the heels in
motion is the best medicine ono can
take. I run up and down stairs hero
almost as easily as I did years ago ,
when I never expected that my term
vould run up into the nineties. I have
ctcaslonnl twinges from the nervous
shook and physical injury sustained
from an explosion that occurred while
I was conducting some experiments
with nitrogen gaa years ago. In other
respects , my days pass as painlessly as
they did when I was n boy carrying n
grocer's basket about the streets. It
is very cutioun , " added the aged phi-
lanthropi&t musingly , "bu1 , somehow ,
though I have none of the pains and
troubled that old men talk about , I
have not the some luxury of lifo the
same relish in the mere ret of living
that I had them. Ago is like baby
hood como back again , in n certain
way. Even the memories of baby-lifo
30H1O back the tricks , the pranks , the
boyish dreams ; and things that 1 did
not remember nt all when I was forty
or fifty years old I recollect vividly
now. But a boy of ninety nnd a boy
of nine are very different things , none
the loss. I never felt bettor in my
lifo , except for twin pea occasioned by
my nitrogen experiment , " > aid the old
man , as ho took the friend's hand at
parting. "But still I hear a voice
calling to mo , as my mother often did
when I was a boy , 'Peter. Peter , it is
about bedtime , " and I have an old
man's presentiment that
I HHAtL 1JE TAKEN SOON. "
If there had boon a second sightin
the old man's words , ho could scarcely
have epokon 'more prophetically ; for ,
although extended over several months
and marked by no visible symbols of
disease , almost from that day the de
cline of senility commenced , and day
by day a veil has stolen over his once
alert senses. His memory of events
has grown misty ; ai he expressed it
with graphic brevity the other day ,
he seems to see things in a fog that
happened years ngo , and to notice
things going on around Mm as if ho
was dreaming. At times his sight ap
pears to bo almost completely ex
hausted , and ho peers into the familiar
faces of old friends , with the sad
apology , "You must excuse me , but I
can't see you. " Hts hearing is equally
impaired , but a strange phenomenon
due probably to irritation of the ex
piring auditory nerve occasionally
develops itself. Ho hears sounds a
great way cff and complains of the
rumbling of vehicles and the confu
sion of voices on Union square. But
this
KXTIUOUDINAKY SENHITIVKNEBH
only troubles him occaoionally - gen
erally nt night , after ho lays hia head
upon his pillow ; thus evincing a fact
often noticed by physicians having the
care cf nervous invalids , namely , the
extent to which the vibrations of
sound are transmitted by the upper
stratum of the ground , and particu
larly by rocky or paved surfanes.
BAVE TI1K ONE KAULINa IDEA
the last philanthropic project of his
lifo that of adding a completely
equipped workshop to existing educa
tional appliances of Cooper institute
Mr. Cooper hns parted with all in
terest in human affaira , nnd han ceased
active participation in the manage
ment of the vaat and varied interests
over which ho exorcised such a rninuto
supervision only a few months ago
Hia principal pastiulo consists In tosi-
lug rubber balls , u baakot of which
stands in the room fitted up as Ills
study , but hta sight is so feeble that if
ho loses one ho cannot find it again ,
and they are accordingly provided
with little elastic strings of rubber
that -ho holds butwositi his fingers , BO
that the potty little bauble comes back
to him on the rebound. Uo amuses
himself for lioura in this way , stop
ping occasionally to sou a visitor , but
replying to all propositions to enter
upon now projects "I am too old for
anything now and only living out my
few last hours till God calls mo. "

of the senses has como a correspond
ing loss ef faculty a loss that , with a
lucidnesH of perception rare in the ex
perience of the aged , ho fully under
stands and frankly acknowledges as
the precursor ot the final dropping
away. "I am dying , " ho eaid to a
friend ono day. "I may bo so eral
months about it , potslbly cevoralyears ,
merely waking and sleeping , and load
ing a sort of vegetable existence , But
death has already extinguished my in
terest in human affairs , and I am dead
in all that makes a man a living and
energetic reality in the world. " Ho
sayg these things with a strange
dreaminess in tiis ogod eyes , which ,
since the loss of sight sot in , have aa
quired the far-off rousing expression
that ono notices so often in the eyes of
very old persons He walks with an
uncertain , hesitating , sidling move
meut very different from the elasticity
of gait that ho still retained on the
ninety-second anniversary of his birth ;
and his hands have acquired the
habitual semi-closure of the fin
gcrs that always accompanies
the final stages of senility. Uis
voice , on the other hand , retains
ITS 01.0 DISTINCTNESS ,
and its Intonations nro as clear as
ever , lie hopes to live long enough
to see his workshop finished and
opened to pupils who wish to take the
degree of M. K , aa now conferred at
the Stevens foatituto in llobokon , but
nil the arrangements 1m v a been nmdo
for its completion in his absence ,
should increasing feebleness finish its
work before his last project is fully
executed.
THE DKATH Of MIS OLD t'HIKXI )
And family phsinian \ , Dr. Edmund G
Iliwson , which occurred two weeks
Ago , affected the old man visibly , und
he hns seemed since then to fade
more rapidly than before. The two
old men , friends of yean' standing ,
were in the habit of mooting occasion
ally to talk over old tlmoj. Their res
idences on Lexington avenue facud
each other , and when tno symbolic
crape appeared on Dr. Rawson's door
his old friend stood at the window
Raizing wistfully acron the street and
fancying that ho taw It. Possibly , by
some strange freak of expiring vision ,
ho may have distinguished tha sable
streamers. It was Rawspn who at
tended Mrs. Cooper during her last
long illness she died of consumption
and the tidings of his demise np-
ponrod to remind the oven older man
of the open pravo at his feet , The
funeral also left an impression , appar
ently ; nnd when speaking of his own
extreme ago since then , * it is usually
with some reference to his old frlond
llawson. Hopes are entertained , as
there is no specific discnso to contend
against , that as the impression thus
created upon the old nvm s mind fades
away , ho may recover his usual spirits
and take a stronger hold on lifo. But
with the presentiment ot agu , ho
shakos his head when such hopes ixre
uttered nnd gazes steadfastly across
the river.
The Modern Ked Riding Hood ,
Cindmmtl Saturday Night.
The subject of this sketch was a
clover little girl , who derivml her odd
name from wearing on her ho.id the
sleeve of her father's old red tUnntil
shirt. She was nn independent little
piece , and when asked why her mother
didn't buy her n now bonnet , eaid she
would ' 'juat sleeve were what nha had
on. " When ono of the neighbors'
children sneorlngly naidi "Your pa
goto drunk , " Little Red Hiding Hood
responded : "Your pa would , too ,
but ho can't afford it ; " and when the
next-door boy ill-naturedly paid :
"Your mother takes in washing , " Lit
tle Rod Riding Hood answered ,
"She don't take m much when your
mother gota the first whack ut the
lino. "
It will be soon from thcso incidents
in her life that though little road , she
was well posted , and the confidence
with which her mother dispatched her
to carry codfish balls down into Steers
township to her eick graudmothcr is
easily understood.
Holding the lead dime , which her
mother hud given her for her car faro ,
tightly in her hand , Little Red Rid ing
Hood started for n ntrcct car , and
having a few minutes to wait , im
proved the opportunity by setting up
< \ howl that attracted the attention of a
benevolent old gentleman , to whom
she explained her cause for griof. She
was going , she said , to her poor , sick
randmothor , and had been put off n
car because her dime was n counter
feit. The gentleman gave her a quar
ter and put her on the next car. The
conductor in duo time called on Little
Red Riding Hood for a faro , when oho
produced her lead dime. "This is
counterfeit , " said the conductor ;
whereat Riding Hood fell to sobbing
as if her heart would break , the con
ductor panood her , and an old lady
: > ave her a dime and a boy shared
lomo gingerbread with hor. Arrived
at her grandmother's house , Little
Rod Riding Hood sat down and ate
the codfish balls ; then she bought
some milk from n drunken mllkmnv ,
upon whom she passed the counterfeit
dime , receiving from him 1C cents in
change , after which she prccoodod to
her grandmother's and staid with her
for thrco weeks.
In contrasting thin story with the
original Little Rod Riding Hood , the
reader should boar in mind the disad
vantage our hoioino labored under in
being her own wolf , a role whicii she
sustained with signal ability. Thcro
docs 'not appear to bo anything more
to add except that the town is ( full of
our kind of Little lied Riding Hooda.
