The board of trade meeting on Monday night was another ntartcr of ilk at Itast , in the proponed enter prise of another bridge between hero and Omnha. Among these present wore W. 0. James , T. J. Evans , J. ) . Morgan , A. 0. Graham , A < B. \IcKuno , J. W. Chapman , J. T , lart.T. W. McCargar , E. U. Odoll , VI. G. Griflin , L. 0. Baldwin , J. rluoller , W. F. Sapp , John Dohany ; nd Marshall Key. Judge .lames presided nnd Score- ary Udell , of the board of trade , tattd the purposj of the Rathorinu. An informal discutsion followed. It ppearod that there wore three iridgo onttrprwcs to bo _ talked vor , ono being embodied [ in rhat in known aa the Saunders bill , vhioh provides simply fof a railroad ridge at some point within twenty niles of tee pieeont Union Pacific jridgo. There nuemed to bo but one oeling in regard to thin , and that bong - ' ng of opposition , it being eyed ith suspicion an a move m the inter- sts of the Union Pncitio , and to pro- out the building of ny otlur bridge. A second cnterprito talked ever , wan onu which ia snid to bo nhuping tself into dolinito form in Omaha , roviding for a combined railway wag- n and foot bridge , and for which it rai stated that § 100OoO had already iuen subtcnbud. Still another is or.o which waa the utcomo of Sunday conferences hold nst rpring , between committees of ho bjurdn of trade in Couucsl Bluffs nd 0innha , and which is embodied n u bill introduced in congress before IB adjournment , providing for a jtidgo for wagons , fit root cars , and oot passengers only. There ocemed to bo qulto a division if Bontimcnt lu to whotnor a combined railway and wagon bridge , or a wagon > ridge only , was needed. Ono or two of thuse present objected o any aortof a bridge , but the othora ixpreased thotnaolvea in favor of some jottoring of communication between ho two cities. Those who favored a wagon bridge mly urged that the matter had been horoughly canvassed last spring , and ho sentiment of the people waaoocer- ainod very carefully nt that time , it ) oing strongly against any railway at- achment. There scorned to bo no reason for retiring from the position then taken. They claimed that there was dungcr in having another railway nidgo , us the various railways would croae the river and have their termini n Omaha. If BO , nothing would bs ; aiuod and much lost. In shipping west the trouble now 'ouud wni that there was great delay , n broken car lots especially , the coeds , if shipped across the Union ? acifio biidgu , beiag delayed a day or , wo , sometimes more , in being trans- "erred to the road going out of Omaha. Jndor present arrangements jner chants wore obliged to cart goods across the river and deliver to local depots in Omiha to SPcuro prompl ihinment , and if another railroad mdge was built there would bo the Bumo delay then in transferring ot ; hp other eido. There was the fear ol railway monopoly also , if the roads lad anything to do with it. The Union Pacific company would fight a ailroad bridge onterpiiso and proba- ) ly defeat it , so that no bridge of any cindoould bo secured. On the other hand , these who advo cated a combined biidgo urged that il was imposaiblo to secure the largo amount of money needed to build a wagon bridge unlean railway help was Boourod. It could not bo raised by axation , as Poctawattatnio county would yoto down any such tax as they did the proposal to build a now jai tore. The money could bo raised by subscription and celling bonds. If r was to bo a railway bridge also , thi companies interested would help builc t. It was urged thut it was useless For Council BIufFa to think it coulc keep all those railways in a prckot They were bound to push wuutwurd ind already ono hnd gene down by tin nouth and crossed the river and another at thonorthand nftor getting ever the ; retaliate on Council Blufla and dis criminate against it. The other would in tiiuo do likewise. Thea roads were reaching west , and thi city must depend largely for it jobbing trade on western territory The city and the railways should pus ! oat together after trado. Thus the pros and cons were dis cussed , and at last , in order to RC some tangible expression , Dr. Me Kuno introdncod a resolution favorinj the building of a wagon bridge , bu opposing any railway bridge , and tha the members in congress bo potitionc < toiupport Uio wagon bridge bill. On motion of Col. Sapp , furtho consideration of the matter was post period ono week and u committee ap pointed , consisting of Messrs. KOUXHERN COMMERCE Tbo Proposed Steamship Line from Now Orleans to Glasgow. To The Editor of Tim BEE. la your issue of the 20th inst. you publish the report of the proposed es tabliohmont of a line of steamers to ply between New Orleans and Qlas jew , under tho.auspices of the Anohoi Line company , now represented in Now York by Henderson Brothers. The establishment of commerce bo- tweou the southern ports and' Europe has been the foromoat ideal of south ern statesmen for many years past , and Oalhoun devoted all the energies of his lifo to that object , and the un derlying thought that impelled the movement to oecctsicn was the hope that in the independence of the south ern states that capital and prosperity would seek their shores. But though repeated efforts to divert commerce from Now York , Boston and Philadel phia have boon made , they have been bat partially successful. I resided for a number of years in the south , and waa led to believe in the theo ries advanced by many ot its able politicians , but in 1850 , while visiting a relative in Now York during the exciting can vass of the first republican campaign 1 learned that the major portion of the importation to this country was from manufacturers or speculators in different portions of Europe who were represented by their own relatives , or by a portion of the Grm , or else aomo trusted friend in New York or Bos ton , and that in many instances the largest banking houses of Europe were represented by proxy , and con sequently the greater portion of the trade found its way to the north. This gentleman was a large ship own er at the time , and be gave it to mo as the result of his experience that when shippers wore in quest of vessels it would bo found that fonr would bo loading for Now York , while ono might bo destined fora southern port , mid that n Now York vessel would bo filled up nnd cleared off long boforn the other was ready to go , Ho told mo prophetically that ho believed they would iind it could not bo done by tlio loaders of the south. Beside this other causes have hindered the move- Many of the Bailing ships from the cast employed black orowa , and to cater to the stevedore population many of the southern ports onforcec an arbitrary law , enacted many year aio , tikitig the crows off and lodging them in jail until ready to doparl. am for this reason many captains did no care to take cargoes there. Again many of the European capitalists who had invested in state bonds and stat banks successively , which had boon backed up by state authorities , had become victims ol inlaplacnd conii deuce , and for many years Entopeai capital has not cared to invest in tha section , Again , there is an Clement ii southern eooiety , not thn best which do not take kind ! to capitalists , aa they thin they cannot have the _ Bam power where industrial pursuits ar thriving , and also capital seeks qui etude and Bound governmental ideas The building of roads from the wcs and from New Orleans to Callforni and Mexico , may BO open up a larg trade on their lines that it may b found profitable to establish line from Now Orleans , but for a few years to come wo rouat look upon I ai an experiment , No ono would b more pleased to BOO this Bucccaafu than I , as then having two outlet * river navigation a well a rail , ther would bo competition , and thus the rallroadu would bo compelled to carry our products at very much reduced rates , or find their bunincss diverted from them.
