At tha Stock Exchange the markets
were depressud at the opening by the an
nouncement that Porter , president of the
St. Paul & Omnha rood , had suddenly
terminated negotiations for a ecttlcment
of the railroad war by refuting t > join the
conference , on t ho ground that the Mil
waukee & St. Puul company , through tlio
purchase of the Cbippewa Valley & Su-
peri rroa-1 ( itiuut 75 miles long i.nd ex
tending from W.'thash ] , Minnesota , to the
lumber oantpi in Eau Claire county ) , had
again encroached upon the territorial
rights of the St. Paul & Omaha roal.
Although this suddoa ctiango in the aspect
of affairs made it appear that the war was
a * far from a tettloment us ever , laittrny
offlciila had not abandoned hope , and tliii
feeling spread among operators ai the
morning advanced. Hence tbo umkoJ

which occurred shortly before the first

advanced on the announcement that the
directors had declared a dividend tf G per

the final sales there was a reduction of
i@lj per cent , from the highest point ,
but the under tone of the market was
strong.
Reports current that Porter , president
ef the Omaha road , had B gniBen a willing
ness to join the conference , provided that
the question of territorial rights be con
