The neat and tasty structure which
has been reared so apeodily on upper
Farnam street by the Christian church
people was formally dedicated ycatcr-
day. The building is a model of good
sense and good taste , plain bnt cosy
and commodious , and docs credit to
the pastor , Rov. Mr. Ingram , and
these of the brethren who aided him
in planning and carrying out the pro
ject. The society is not a wealthy
ono , and deserves great credit forthoir
energy and porsnveranso in providing
themselves with BO comfortable and
pleasant n pluco of worship.
Without attempting n description of
the edifice in detail , it may bo said
that it is of wood , rather inclining to
the gothic order , its outward appear
ance as well aa its inside finish having
ati air of plain comfort and good socso
rather than an attempt at elegance or
Catholicism.
The auditorium is of ample size , tha
acaustio properties all that could bo
doaired , and the appointments well
chosen and In good taste.

from the royal palace that those glod
tidings wore sout forth , not from the
throat cities , not from the celebrated
Echools of learning , not from the
Sanhedrim , not from Rome , the Boat
of power or Greece , the land of cul
ture and letters , but from the secluded
plaoo over which worldly prosperity
nnd philosophy had placed a cloud. But
from the ehadow of this cloud comes
Ono with the words of glad tidings in
His mouth.
2. Because of its proclalmers ho
miqht ha'vo been ashamed of the gos
pel of Christ. Not with the sword
do the armies go forth to preach the
gospel of 'Christ and force mun to
accept it. It was customary , for that
which was tor the nation'ti good , to bo
forced upon the subjects if they would
not otherwise ccccp : of it ; but hero
God uses the foulest things of the
world to confound the things that are
miijhty.
3. Itn character may have caused
him to bo ashamed of the gospel. War
was thou considered noble in defend
iiig a people or a cauec , but by the
gospel nothing could be obtained bat
peace , and under its wings it uhadow <
ed many faithful subjects. The sub1
tie distinctions of the philosophers in
their theories while searching for that
which they could never obtain in this
manner , caused their many followers
and admirers to almost deify them ;
while in the gospel there is so much
which might easily bo understood by
the peasant. '
4. Because of its hero. It was a
time of hero-worship ; when on the
wings of popular opinion the person
of admiration would be carried to the
terrestrial skies , bnt not so with the
preacher of the gospel. "Tho foxes
have holes and the birds of the air
have nests , but the Son of Man hast
not where to lay bts head. "
5. The results may have caused him
to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ ;
for by it banishment from the syna
gogue was but the least of the trials
through which the votaries of Christ
were compelled to pass. Among the
Jews those who followed Christ were
opposed to the sacrifice of the temple
and the employment of many who
held tenaciously to their oDico , and
wore therefore hated by the Jews as a
body , while the Gentiles hated any-
thine the origin of which could bo
traced to the Jews. Tbo amphithea
ter wns the place of enjoyment for the
world , but a place of torment to the
true Christian. The stake and fagots
caused the halo of glory that sur
rounded tunny others , and on account
of everything being thrown in its
pathway to impede its progress , ho
may have been nshamnd of its results.
Yet having this adversary , with his
many arguments the apostle says , "I
am not ashamed of the gospel of
Christ , for It is the power of God , "
and to sustain this statement fact
stands against theory.
But of the gospel , in all its glorious
character , ho is truly not ashamed.
And why should ho not bo ashamed
of it ? Because of its simplicity , while
thn word is so grand the moat talented
are compelled to nik themselves in
wordt , I cannot understand II ; yet
any of the children of mon can comprehend -
prohond the inipired words , "Belluvo

there were ton persecutions of the
Christians during the first 250 years ,

their places to testify to thu power of
the goapel of Chriat , and when n hun

4. Because of its completeness , the
aspiration of man cannot ba realized
in any ether way than in the gospel
when wo ahall know even as wo nro
known. The moat distinguished
sciential finally conies to the door nt
which ho is compelled to knock , and

and in the glory beyond wo shall realize -

bo , "but wo know when Ho shall ap
pear wo shall bo like Him. " A man
of i ho world will do anything to ob
tain ono month or day to remain on
the earth at the time ho expects to die ,
A queen ouco said she would give
half her kingdom for an hour , but for
the true followers of Christ to depart
and bo with Christ is far better.
5. The undcstruetibility of the gos
pel. The attack on the bible changes ,
but it is always continued with con
centrated forco. Tom Paine pre
dicted that the bible would bo ox-
oiled , but instead the increased num-
E er that has boon published has sur
passed the most eanquino expectation.
The priests have hurled at it their an
athemas , bnt it stands as Gibraltar ,
against which the mad sea casts her
angry waves. And when the stars shall
drop from their orbit on account of the
powers of attraction being withheld ,
then shall the gospjl continue in its
parity.
6. Because of the joy caused by the
gospel. It binds the followers of
Christ as a family in which each mem
ber enjoys the pleasures of homo.
7. Because of the hopes of the Chris
tian. The arrow of sorrow strikoi our
heart when death snatches one of our
family from us , but when wo know of
the glorious reunion wo can rest in
hope. This world is but a cradle in
which God is rocking his children to
sleep.
This is bnt a shade wof the discourse ,
In reference both to length and con
tents , it was so full of thought and
beautifully expressed.
At the cloao of the sermon the pas
tor announced that there was a bal
ance still to bo raised before the society
oty could enjoy their new and baauti-

liberal manner , and a largo amount

AMU SEMEN I'S.
On Saturday lost tho. mint imciit ;
at the Boyd gave us a now and very
pretty drama entitled
Tltn MAID OF AIIHAN.
The piece in a dramatization by Mr.
Louis R Bantn. who , nit hough un
known to fame aa u play wtitor , has
noverUiolous done his work very clev
erly end acquitted himself equally
well In the interpretation cf his hero ,
Hugh Ilolcomb. The first acb of the
play no given here is weak and lacks in
tercut , but wo are informed that a now
version has boon prepared by Mr.
Baura , nnd will bu substituted for the
old ono this week , commencing at
Sioux City to-night. With that ex
ception the piece is a refined and en
joyable drama and pleases the psoplo ,
the intorcat increasing steadily to the
close. The oconic c doc to are excep
tionally fine , und in ono or two nets
brought , out a burnt of applause from
the audience.
Nearly all the characters aru well
taken and the work well done.
Miss Agnes Hillock as Shlola is
peihapa the most conspicuous of the
group , both on account of the promi
nence of the part and her admirable
rendition of the author's idunl. Com
bining an earnest endeavor , natural
gifts of a high order , a clear and melo
dious soprano voice , a ploaei-jg face
und thu happy faculty of capturing
'the affections of her audience , oho de
picla the varying fortunes ot the1 in
nocent Irish maiden in a manner that
proves her to bo an earnest and con
scientious worker in the profession shu
has chosen.
Mre. Gray also does excellent work
in the character of Mrs. Holc.omb ,
and gives evidence of her character
and attainments , which are of a high
order.
Miss Genevieve Rogers does Oona
very cleverly , ulso , though the part
gives her but slight opportunity , and
Miss Aikon aa Grace acquits herself
well. Of the gentlemen Mr. Frank
Aiken is always goo I , and too wall
known to need any word of praiao.
Mr. Nicholson's Phadrig caught the
gallery , and the ether characters were
all well done.
Mr. John Williams , formerly lead
er of the song and dunce team in Bar
low , Wilson & Co.'s minstrels , joined
the party hero and will doubtless
prove a valuublo acquisition. The
company did a largo buaincin here
and gave general catief notion , although
entirely unknown b afore , und wo uro
glad , because they uro a company of
ladies and gentlemen.
The next attraction is the
KKLUKHJ-IIKIUNOLI COXUKUT ,
which , takes plaoo at the opera house
thia evening. It is hardly necessary
to do moro than timply remind thu
musical public of thin entertainment ,
as Miss Kellogg is a favortto in Omaha
nnd with the ot'hcr at lists in the
company can bat drnw a Inrgo
houiti. Urignoll , Adninougki ,
and OloBo were hare last tooiou with
the Olaro Louis * Kellogg company nnd
