"How did it happen that you be

"Well , about twonty-fivo years ago

to provo tlmt a man can own nnd drive
last horses without making a gambler
of himself. Mr. Beechor said to me
once : 'Mr. Bonner , aa long no you
don't bet , your position is as firm an
the everlasting hills.1"
By thia time the valley of the Saw
mill river had been passed , nnd the
while buildings and green fields of
Mr. Bonnor'a farm were in sight ,
crowning a steep hill to the north
ward. The bright green of the fields
on the farm was in marked co"trnst
with the brown of the surrounding
ones. This Mr. Bonnor ascribes to
the liberal use of ashes and other fer
tilizers. ' 'I raise very little except
hay on my farm , " said ho , "and am
able , by the liberal use of fertilizers ,
to got nearly threp times as much to
the aero as my neighbors do. "
There was an exhilaration in that
ride amid the glories of the autumn , in
the crisp , clear air of the morning , behind -
hind thoae two fleet horace , and the
reporter was sorry when the farm gate
was reached. The farm , as stated
above , is on the crest of a hill. It is
about three miles east of Tarrytown ,
and commands a fine view of all that
region from Sleepy Hollow , in which
the apirit of Irving yet lingers , to
where , away to the southeast , a break
In the hills shows the blue waters of
the sound. The summit of the emi
nence is a small plateau , and hero Mr.
Bonnor has his track , threo-quartors
of a mile iu length. The farm is on a
"divide , " and the water that falls on
the back part of the track Hews
Into the sound , and that
which falls on the homestretch
finds its way to the Hudson. The
drainage of the course is excellent ,
and it is always kept iu good condi
tion for trials of speed. A neat little
'arm-house etanda by the gate , nnd
near it is the carringo house. Beyond ,
toward the course , ho two largo build
ings shaped like the letter L. These
ire the stables where the trottura are
kept. On the left of the driveway ,
leading up to the track , is n largo barn.
Aa Mr , Bonnor nnd the reporter were
whirled around the course Mr. Bon
ncr pointed outaomu of his horses
that wcro roaming about the fields.
"There , " enid he , pointing to
dejected looking horao which
stood with drooflog head iu
the leo of the barn , "that

A tour of the stables waanowmndo.
All along the front of thu buildings

2:22 : , him never been outside the farm
gate. Startfo is the first trotter that
turned ilootwood conns o a mile in 2:10. :
Ho haa trotted half a milo iu 1:01 : A.
In spouking of the development of
speed in trotting horses , Mr. Bonnor
said : "I have now in my stable throe
times as many horsoa that can boat
2:30 : as there were in the country
twenty-five yonra ago. "
In regard io the driving of trottinu
horses ovtr country roads ho said : "I
frequently have driven up from Now
York with my best horees and have al
ways found that they trotted fully cs
wall the next day. I think a long
dtivo is rather beneficial than other
wise. It ia thu pace that hurts a
hurco , not the length of the drivo.
Whenever Dexter has beou from the
city to the farm he has been driven up
and back. " In Mr. Bonner'a stable
in this city ia the veteran Dexter , now
in his twenty-fourth year. A Tribune
reporter visited the stable recently ,
and found the celebrated animal
comfortably housed in a largo box
stall. Ho does uot look as young as
he did when hin record of 2:17A : as
tonished the world , and his four white
foot set at naught the rhyming rulo'of
horao dealers : ' 'One white foot , buy
him ; two white feet , try him ; three
white feet , look well about him ; four
white foot , go on without him. " Still
there iu life in old Dexter yet , and
under the kind and careful treatment
which ho receives ho will probably
last for eomo years.

the blood , the disease , in any form or

great vegetable blood purifier , S. S. 3.
It clctanaoB the blood of all scrofulous
taint so thoroughly that the disease
never returns.
I had scrofula for seven months , the
ulcer covering the entire uuifaco of
both lefts. After having tried the
uau'il remedies with no relief , i re
sorted to S. S. S.and am glad to say
that six bottles has olloctunlly cured

Atlanta , Ga.
I suffered from scrofula 17 years.
My shin bones were covered with ul
cers and ono mass of rotten flesh , and
the odor was almost unbearable. All
remedies and treatments failed until I
began taking 8. 8. S. Previous to
taking It I ut times could scarcely
walk. Now I can walk all day , and I
have to thank S. 8. 8. and it only for
my ouio. TJIOS. M < ; FAULANI > ,

Some thirty years ngo there lived
iu Montgomery , Ala. , u young man
who "was terribly nlllictod with Scrof
ula. " After being treated for a long
time by the medical profession of thia
town with no benefit , ho commenced
taking 8. 8. 8 , After persistently
taking it two months ho was cured.
Being acquainted with him for 20
years thereafter , I can testify that the
disease never returned.
