For the past five years the impor-
portaiipn of crude mooraohaum and
amber into this country has steadily
increased. In forinur years pipes and
smokers' ' articles comprised the solo
entries of meerschaum and amber at
the Now York custom house. The
government levies a duty of $1.50 per
gross and 75 per cant ad valorem on
tbo manufactured article , while the
raw material is admitted { coo. Yionnit.

industry. Fire years ago a Chamber *
street Him brought over , ea an experi
ment , Austrian artisans to fashion tbo
orado meerschaum blocks into pipes.
The experiment proved a success , nd
now there are five or six now York
factories , employing about 200 work
men , that turn out fcat-c'asa ' meer
schaum work.
The crude meerschaum comes tfrom
KiltBchik and Eik-Sohuhr in A.natu-
biu , in Asia Minor , wioro it is found
loose or embodied in chalky , nuipoa-
tine rocka. la tiza it varioi fraru | , ho
dimensions of a walnut to that of a
man's head. When it is first-mined
it is soft , but it becomes Lapd when
exposed to the air. In its virgin state
it cracks very easily. The buniuoas of
mining and marketing meerschaum is
entirely under tbo control of Arme
nians. They are shrewd traders and
can discount a vendor of wooden
hams and nutmegs at his own trade.
For self-protection buyers have in
sisted on the patting of tin raw
prodnctf into marketable shape , so
BO that some idea of the value of the
goods can bo aacnrtained on sight.
The crude blocks of moers-liaum are
therefore slightly waxed and polished
so that the grain can bo 'readily soon
The market ia at Vienna , where the
Armenian producers have established
ngoncioa , and where the whole world
goes to buy. En marketable shape ,
meerschaum is assorted in four sizes.
The largest sice has about thirty-five
pieces to the case , the second averages
seventy-five pieces , the third about
175 pieces , and the fourth from 300
to 500 pieces. Jfoch size again is
graded in eight or ninoiqualities , A
popular notion ic that meerschaum is
sold by weight. If oiioh were the
case the "light" pounds-would bo in
great demand. Connoisseur * prefer a
block neither too light nor too heavy.
If too > light , the meerschaum is porous
ous and will abiorb too much noco-
tino. If too heavy , it will not color
well. American workmen have not
yet boon found to sucoecefully manip
ulate the raw material. All the work
men employed in the industry have
been brought over from Austria. They
earn big wages , and are ooorotivo with
their handicraft.
The process of manufacturing meer
schaum piped requires both okill and
practice. The blocks are ifirdt rough
ly out into the shape of c pipo. They1
are then dipped into water , and > vhilu
wet are turned on a' latho. tt'N eye is
the only guide to produce evenness
and eymmotry. After thp lather has
completed his work thoipe8 ro rubbed -
found in the

velvety surface , being used M a file.
When all the scratches are removed
and a porfertly smooth surface is pre
sented , rie article is dipped into hot
wac , < oft a few minutes there , and
then polished with u rag. Ili'cht there

chocing a meerschaum article always
aplect ono having a yellow tinge. A
A yellow shade shows that the moer-
eehaiun is suflieiontly porous to absorb
serb WSY , and therefore it will readily
color from nicotine. A white moor-

If thu government imposed a duty
on amber ia its crude at&to , the ecu-
torn houeo receipts would bo consid

the trade agree in assorting that am

may bo found in this country. At
present the deposit of amber is almost

$30 to $40. Amber of greenish hue
is the most valuable , and A block gum ,
supposed to bo amber , comes _ next in
value. The popular supposition that

clear is not supported by fact. Oloudy
amber is stronger , and it obscures
nicotine stains , and is therefore to bo
preferred ; but clear ntnbor is prettier ,
nnd is always in demand , A combi

the greater variance in tastes for pipes

As a general rule n city man pur
chases n pipe from motive ! of
economy. Ho wants n good pipe ,
and doosn't hositnto to purchase n
meerschaum. Sometimes a city man
buys a pipe because it has a novel
shape , but , ns a rule , n desire to ocon.

Other manufacturers said that , not
withstanding the enormous increase
of the manufacture of cigars , the de
mand for pipes is not curtailed. Ono
dealer "said that the demand for pipes
is now 25 per cent greater than five
years ago and ho thought pipes would
always sell , on account of economy
and their Americanized shapes. The
etyles of pipes are legion , but the fa
vorite style in demand with smokers
