EXCITING SCENE IN MID-OCEAN.
Mon Oyorboarcl In a Monsoon. With
Sliartts About.
Massachusetts Courier.
A correspondent who \raa a pasaon
gorby the steamship Dacca , which
loft Madras for London on the 1st ult.
aouda an interesting account of an ex
citing Bcono which ho witnessed dur
ing a storm in the Indian oceun. The
votisol encountered the monsoon a few
days atter leaving Oolumbo , and had a
rough time of it until the 17ult. , when
the gale became BO violent that can
vas had to bo taken in , awning furled
and things made as snug as posaiblo ,
The correspondent writea what fol
lowed :
"I came on deck at G a. m. ; . it was
blowing fiercely , and the spray coming
over the shooto. There were three o
ua on deck when the boll struck a
Bliss , a Mr. and myself. Wo were
holding on to our chaira , which were
firmly laahod to the inner cabin sky
lights , under the Ice of the ladies
saloou. Part of the crew were work
ing hard to got the starboard lifoboa
in board , when a bigger roll to tin
windward warned us of what wai
coming. 'Hold on ! ' oomo ono shouted
Wo hold on. The duck stood upright
In came the sea gunvralo , over the
talT rail , up to our waists , lifted the
lifeboat out of its shackles , carried i
overboard , emashing away stanchions
and davits and out to sea. Then
the horrid of 'Man
came cry over
board ! '
"The helm was put down , the en
gine reversed , and back wo wont on c
search all the more so as sharks had
been seen round the ship earlier in the
morning. The boat was presently
soon aomo 200 yards off , keel upper1
most. Soon after the two men were
observed clinging on to it. Then came
an exciting two hours during ) which
wo steamed after the boat , which was
drifting rapidly toward the east. But
turning a chip like , the Dacca is a very
olow business , and M she hung In the
wind's eye a jib was hoisted to bring
her round , by the time this was done
the boat , with its pitiful looking crow ,
was away two milus and more to lao-
ward , and wo were rolling heavily
and unmanageable. At l ot the cap
tain doeidod to lot'or B boat , and tbo
order was given 'Stand by the boat , '
and BOOU after 'lowerVhd jl go
ing in her ? " wo ahoutod.
'Tho flrat oflloar , Mr. Ingram ,
sprang over the aide , caught hold of
tbo davit ropes and slipped down , but
jast ai ho got near her a great roll of
the ship llttod him clear of the boat ,
twenty fcot ia the air. As ho came
down again the boat had drifted for
ward , and ho was plunged down in
the boiling sea for five or six seconds. a
Up ho came again aa the ship heeled
over , still hanging on , and iniasod by
an ace having hia skull smashed
against the small boat's sida. It was
really a , terrible sight , and wo shud
dered aa wo looked on , the boat all
ho while being dashed np and down
> y the violence of the waves. But at
ast his opportunity came , and
10 dropped into the stern. At once
10 waa followed br the boatswain , in
, wo firemen , and two European sail-
ira , the native crew hanging aharno-
ully back. One of the paeaongom a
? OUDK English oflicor , Lieutenant
Wolff , of the Seventeenth Fuaileera ,
i son of Sir Drummond Wolff , volun-
oerod at once. But the oflicor in
churgo would not accept a paasenger'a
lorvices while men of the crow could
) o got. At last , the boat shoved oil' ,
and the oars were got out , and in a
terrible sea they sut out for the mis
sing boat. Directed by the motions
of a man aloft , they got alongside her ,
and took thu men aboard. They be
an a hard row back.
"Wo lost sight of her again and
again , wondering how she could live in
such a aca. But still she held on and
; ot at laut under our loo. By the help
if a cuta of oil ncutteml over the
waves they were comparatively stilled ,
i ladder was let down , and when the I
net man nteppod on board , such H
cheer greeted him as told him what
we thought of hid pluck and that of the
; allant fellows with him , Captain
iiurkitt was perfectly cool the whole
line , and managed his ship with
; reat skill. When the first oflicor got
i change of clothes , and came down to
ho cabin , ho received all kinds of
congratulations ) and hia health waa
drunk in bumpers of champagne. On
Sunday morning we got under the lee
of Oape Guardafui , and so elded our
iruah with the southwest monsoon , "

the evening ho woke up. his brain ntill
beclouded with liquor ho had drank.
Uo was Blaring at the surroundidga in
bewilderment and surprise when a

"Where am I ? " ho gaaped.

"Did I did ? No I ; what was it ? "

"Did. I , really ; nomehow it seems

"What's that you say ? Did I do al
that ? And I a deacon , too ? " ejaculated
latod the country gentleman , becoming

"Yes , and n deal sight more. You
got drunk , broke into a store , smashed
a $100 showcase , carried off the cash
drawer , knocked down an inoffensive
citizen and tried to kick the life out
of him , shot a bar-koopbr who wouldn't
give you another glass , and fought a
pitched battle for ten.minutes with
half the police in Cincinnati ; then the
patrol wagon arrived and they chained
you down and brought yon hero. "
