The contest la over , nnd the repub
licans by being defeated in namu have
proved victorious in fact. Anderson ,
who was forced upon the republican
party by machine politicians and
bosses , is beaten , and the republicans
have by joining in defeating him , told
the world that they will not endorse
unfair moans or support candidates
whom they believe corrupt. Mr.
Fuaoy , a domoorat , is elected , but if
any fool inclined to regret the election
of a democrat they can blame only
these who forced upon the ropublica , ,
convention a congressional candidate ,
whoHO record , known before the nom
ination , and still better known after
wards , was such as to prove repuluivo
to honest voters. Many rcpublicano ,
yesterday , voted for the first time for
a democrat for any national position
and many hope thixt the action of f u-
turo conventions willbo ] tmohjlhat they
will not bo called upon again to thus
support a candidate of opposite viewa

in choosing.
Pusoy'a majority in thin district is
estimated by his friondu and the com

In making thin estimate , based on
partial returns , they claim Pottawat
tamio county by 1,000 majority , Fre
mont by 700 majority , Crawford by
450 , majority , and Harrison , Mills ,
Shelby and Oassiby 100 oaotij making
a total of 3,050 , to offset which they
concede to Anderson Montgomery
coun'y by COO , and Auiubon by 500 ,
leaving Pusoy'a majority about COO
in the district.
The official returns for the county
outside of this city are all in , except
five townships. They show a major
ity of 010 for Puooy , which added to
the majority of C04 in the city , makes
Pusoy'a majority in this city nnd
county laiO , which will bo increased
somewhat by completed returns.

protest against Anderson , and the
light centering about the congressional

On Tuesday afternoon last Mrs.
L. Pettit , wife of the teller of the
Tirst National bank , of Fort Wayne ,
apparently died , and the undertaker
took charge of the body. Arrange
ments were making for the funeral ,
and watchers sitting with the sup
posed corpse. At 10 o'clock at night
a faint tigh was heard coming from
the body. The watchers started to
their feet with alarm , stopped to her
side , found her eyes wide open , while
in a iToice that was scarcely an oudi-
bio whisper she recognized thorn and
asked for her husband. At first the
attendants were speechless with won
dor at this resurrection of the dead ,
then , with the revulsion of feeling ,
they almost screamed with excite
mout. The husband catno in haste ,
and with joy unspeakable clasped
again his living wife in his arms. The
doctor was nont for , and ho was us
much astonished as the rest of the
household at beholding living what ii
his exact medical science ho had declared

position. " Thia is undoubtedly true ,
and it is probable that no intelligent
man or educated physician ever
thought otherwise.
"What has been called 'aowor gas' '
ia composed of nir , vapor and gaacs
in constantly varying proportions , to
gether with living germs vegetable

putrescent matter. In uhort , is com-
poaoi of whatever is Gufticontly vol
atile or buoyant to float m the atmos
phere , and in consequence of which
buoyaucy it h permitted to escape
through various sower-outlets. The
term is , in thin omiso , well understood ;
and it Is , moreover , just aa correct as
would bo thu tunns sewer-vapor , or
sewer nir , which nome have chosen to
substitute for it. It n proper hero to
add that the olfensivoneps of odors is
no test of their insalubrity , but that
most fatal germs are often conveyed
in on atmosphere which in odorless.
The absent of unpleasant odors , there
fore , furnishes no proof that the air
does not contain sewer emanations.
