IT wan a boss defeat in moro ways than ono. THE Gorman vote went almost unanimously ever to the democrats. TE Pennsylvania Independent par ty Is a bigger man than Don Camoron. THE Boldler vote didn't rally around Valontino'o flag to any alarming ox- tont. IT i an off year. The republican party scorns to have flown clear off the handle. The assistant democrats throughout -tho country noom to have boon in a largo majority. TUB Republican has three dayn in which to rovlso its returns from the Third district. EVEKY cloud haa its silver lining. Scoor Robonon has climbed the golden political stair. VAL can't road his title clear to n third term in congress. His seat will bo warmed by Wm. II. Mungor. BEN UUTLEK , now that ho is gov ernor of Mausachuaotts , will adapt ae heraldic device a spoon rampant on an eye sinister. IN the words of the Omaha llepnlli- can , the primaries are unanimous and conventions enthusiastic , but the olco < itlon are moro than uncertain. THE independents and intelligent I"- citizens may bo "feather heads , " but they weren't feather weights. Even .Mr. ConkltnR will admit that. "Mn. Pr.kKiNH , of the Bioux Oil ] Journal , haa ncard from the Nintl Iowa district. Ho also knows some thing more of Nebraska politics thai ho did a week ago. TUB "boltois brigado" inflow York succeeded in rolling up 160,000 ma < foriiy for Governor Cleveland. They couldn't swallow the Folgor and Steve French stow without bolting. WILL the Republican road General Connor another luoturo on loyalty ! Thd general carried his county by ovoi 600 majority , and ha will occupy a ftont seat in the next Nebraska state .senate. TUB paternal ancestor of Vul's $ C clerk wields a good deal of influence in Dodge county , but ho can't olecl himself to the state senate , oven when ho stakes his whole lumber yard on the outcome. THE republicans of the ninth low district are to bo congratulated on the emphatic rebuke they huvo ad ministered to brazen bribery and cor potato bulldozing in the defeat ol 81,000 Anderson , and the election ol Mr. Puscy. THUKLOTT WEED , though dying , still retains his faculties. The day baforc election ho madu the following port ! uent remark : "If there had boon Icai timu devoted to proaidental junket ing ( and to the classification of tin president's 'private papers , ' and fowoi cabinet meetings on railroads and it hotels , the present outlook of the re pub ican party would have boon muol more satisfactory , " BOB INGKKHOLL is out for Genera Sherman aa president In 1881 , us th only man upon whom all clautesof re publicans can write.Yhother Popi Bob's judgment is at fr.ult in this respect spoct there ojii bo no question that h strikes the nail on tlio head when h attributes the republican defeat to th persistent refusal of the party to re duce taxes , their insane craving aftc office , and their reckless oxlravaguuo in appropriations. Nothing butbittc lessons of defeat could bring thoi wholesome truths before the part bosie , and if they are appreciated an acted upon , the election of a republ can pre' nnt two years hence is nc an imj , . riibllity. The republics party , or rt'her the party organlzatio is now on tno mourners bench , and il conversion to common sense and a < cord with public sentiment ought t tw the one result worthy of congratt i tlon u flowing from the late electlot THE REPUBLICAN DEFEAT , The Roncral election of Tuesday Is nothing loss than n political revolu tion. The republican party , BO long accustomed to victory that it has ca ressed illusions of invincible strength , ins received n crushing defeat. In every doubtful state its opponent lave swept the field. The most re- loubtablo ot republican strongholds mvo yielded to the invasion of the onomy. Now York , Pennsylvania , ndi.in.-x , Connecticut , Wisconsin and Colorado have swung ever to the [ omocracy , and a democratic governor will preside ever the destinies of Mas- achuscUs. Congress is lost in tbo oner house , and doubts are enter- aincd of the safety of the nnxt son- ate. A defeat so overwhelming , so universal , is unprecedented in nn off jolitic.il jour. The causes of Tuesday's Waterloo lire not difficult to discover. In 1870 ho republican party came oat of the ilcction for president in an actual minority of n quarter of a million rotes , and four years after only BUG- loodod through the remarkable per- onal strength of their candidate nnd ho most desperate campaign in the > olitical annals of our country. For hrco terms of congress in the last our the democrats have controlled the louse and the senate has been no clone hat n republican member dare not eave the body without a pair except ni the risk of destroying tbo party nnjorlty. Under these circumstances , n the prcacnco of n watchful and united opposition , the republican par- y has turned a deaf our to the popu- ar demands for n reduction of taxa- atlon nnd for reform in the admlnis- ration of national affairs , Sol- ish personal considerations and -ho arrogant rnlo of the bosses has destroyed the party harmony in a half a dozen states , while to cap the cli max the uncalled for interference of ho national administration in Now fork , the charges of fraud in the nomination of governor and the in- reduction of the most sinister In fluences in the campaign changed a republican majority of ever 20,000 tea a democratic victory of nearly 150- 100 majority. It would bo folly to aanumo that in creasing confidence in the democratic > arty to moot the questions which the ropublicaus have refused to solve is responsible foe. the republican defeat. The independents nnd intelligent vo- era have simply punished the ropub- leans for neglecting to oolvo thorn. Choy have discharged the servants of ho people tor refusing to obey their nastors. They have passed tholr udgmont upon the assertion hat twenty or thirty political managers own the party. They have denounced the defiance of public opin ion by Jay Hubboll's committee , the wretched drill of the house of repre sentatives by Roboson and Kolfor , the obstinate resistance of party man agers to the popular demands for the reduction of taxation and rovenun ro- brm , and the reckless waste of the surplus in the treasury ousuah jobs an ; ho rivet and harbor bill. Aa parties are hero constituted the only moans of defeating the republi can bosses was' through giving the vie- ory to the democrats. The altorna- ivo wasbravoly accepted by thousands of staunch adherents to republi can principles throughout the country. I ho lessen of the election is , that par ies and party managers are , and will > o hold responsible to their constitu ents ; that they may for a time evade ho responsibility only to find it forced upon them in the form of such a crushing overthrow as that which took > lace at the polls on Tuesday , STATE AND COUNTY. The cyclone which has swept over ho east has also taken in Nebraska. Hie causes of republican disaster in , hls state must bo ascribed to the con trol of the machinery of the dominant party of the corporations. For the irst time slnao the admission of No- jraika to the union the republican's will elect their stuto ticket by u plural ity only. They will lese ono of the principal state officers , the troaaur- orahip , and probably a regent ol the university. Lonn Olark it beaten by Mr. Sturdcvant , who wa ; supported both by ttho anti-monopo- Hats and democrats. "This is the inoal wholesome lesson taught by the cam paign. It demonstrates that oven in i state with 30,000 majority , the ropub Hcan party must hereafter lake can that'notorious jobbers and railroat cappers shall not bo forced on tin ticket. Returns from the Third district < far indicate Valentino's defeat , tlit thuro too the republicans who refuti to'b jw to the dictates of monopoly havi struck a blow that will bo felt fo : many years for honest government In the Second district Mr , Laird may pull through b ; the skin of his tooth , and if ho docs si it will bo by the railroad voto. Judgi Weaver's majority in the First dis trlot Trill bo comparatively light , am that mainly on account of the outrageous goous gerrymander in putting Dougla , county with the South Platte. The legislature is beyond doub anti-monopoly by a good working ma jority. In Douglai county the dem ocratlo anti-monopoly candidates an elected by from 1,500 to 2,000 major Ity , The contest between Oaufielc ( dom. ) and Dewey rep , ) will bo verj close. The democrats will doubtloM elect two-thirds of the house nnd thrco or four republicans may squeeze ihrough by very small majorities. Woman suffrage haa met with n sig nal defeat , not only in this county , jut in the state , and the qucntion in at least settled for many years to como , The Germans , aa a body , have gone ever to the democracy In Nebraska as , hey have in Ohio and Iowa. The prohibition craza Is mainly responsible or this. On the whole , Nebraska can bo con- ; ratulatcd upon the good work , THE TAJainr COMMISSION The tariff commission has finished its labors. After lounging by the sea * shore for weeks , and then making n grand tour of seven thousand miles , visiting many pleasant cities at the public expense and interviewing a lundred or so manufacturers , to the cheerful accompaniment of the pop- ng of champagne corks , the commis sion la prepared to report in a volume of two thousand pages "in favor of making the least poesiblo number of changes , and none of thorn important , in the existing tariff. " Tlnio ends an expensive farce. The commission haa justified the predic tions of its worst oncmioa , and the se rious work of revising the tariff gees back to the representatives of the poo- pie , to whom it belongs. The com mission as charged by General Van Wyck and others is a makeshift designed only fo postpone revision in the interest of the beneficiaries of tariff abuses. It was packed in favor of monopolist manufacturers , Several of its members had a direct interest in maintaining the present onormcus Imposts on dutiabln articles. Its designers - signers have accomplished their ob ject , which was to postpone indefi nitely tariff revision. No ono denies that the task of revis ing the tariff ought to have been undertaken long ago. With an impost of $250,000,000 annually from cus toms , of nhich $200,000,000 gees to the manufacturer aa a bonus , and the remainder to the government , with nn overflowing revenue which offers in creasing inducements to lavish and ox- tr-ivacjant appropriations , the tariff ought at once to receive attention through such a reduction as will re- iovo the people who are taxed by its provisions , without crippling the gov ernment. The people demand a prompt reduction cf the revenue. They will not bo content , with Judge Kelley , ; o BOO the taxes taken from tobacco and whiskey and retained on clothes and other articles of domestic con sumption. The republican majority in the three months which remain may win back a portion of the public confidence which ias boon taken from them , if they undertake and complete the work of relieving the people of the burden of an unnecessary taxation. A surplus revenue of $140,000,000 is worse than useless. It is criminal. Miss COUZENS lost her temper last night , and in losing it lost the pympa * , hy of her audience at Boyd's opera louso. That the criticism of TUG BEE upon her uncalled for and in decent remarks at the Fourth ward poll on Tuesday was just and timely ho loud hisses of the audience last night attested when she repeated the same remarks for which oho was called : o account in these columns. Mrs. Douzons , in common with many other ladies , who , like herself , food on notoriety riety , falls to understand that there can bo any such thing as an honest difference of opinion in politics. It was her failure to appreciate this fact which led to her performances of Tuesday afternoon and last evening. It is safe to say that if the woman suffrage question over comes before Omaha again for adjudication it will bo defeated by a much moro over whelming majority than that which has now snowed it under , and no ono will have contributed moro to such n result than Miss Couziin , whoso im polite and vinegar flavored utterances have alienated many who botoro her advent were strong supporters of the peculiar 'ism ' which she advocates. Whnn a woman so far lowers herself na to appeal to personal violence against those who differ from her upon purely economic questions she places herself out of the palo of that chivalry which oven the self-defend- out suffragists appeal for from the op. posito eox , If Miss Couzlns and her friends could have hoard the remarks from our best cltizans which greeted her indecent tlrado at the Fourth ward poll on Tuesday when Mr , nitohcock was so grossly insulted , she would have leas to say about "big brothers , " and the guns which her great , great grandfather broke over his knee in the riots in St. Louis , They might perhaps , afford her ground for reflection ever the difference be tween a courteous debater on a de batable question and a common brawler. CHUIICH HOWE has been burled so deep that the trumpet of Gabriel will not resurrect him , Ho wanted to be congressman and went to grass ; he ran for lieutenant governor and gel loft. And now the delegation for the legislature ho set up in Nemaha to trade on in the senatorial campaign it defeated by an overwhelming ma jority , although they were fair men and eound republicans just because they were nominated by Church Ilowo's convention.
