A oixty day aojourn in Lnratnio
City nud vicinity , has given nui u
pnasably fair opportunity , of "sizing
up" this much-fumed section ol the
great nnd notorioua west.
Having hoard of the wild nnd
riotous habita of the fiery and un
tamed otccr , the obtrusive and nt
timca hiuhly oonsorioua conduct of
"Lame Eyed Jim" and hia blooming
colleagues In "aticking up" pasaongor
trains and compelling the timorous
traveler to Ho lilw a liorao thief , at the
businecs end of n four-barrolod Win-
cheater to retain hia valuables , and re
ceiving an indistinct impresoion of the
untutored activity necessary to avoid
the livcr-Bcarchliig bullets and reck
lessly handled uhoepo-lfnivcs of the
festive cowboy during hia moments of
hilarity , it was with considerable hesi
tation and an accident innurnnco policy ,
after "standing off" the washwoman
and securing another collar , I loaded
" " with tooth-brush extra
my "grip" a - ,
uuck and other littlo.mementoes of
crado civilization aud ntl'ocUng n spirit
of indilTeroncp , caying to the ' 'boys"
"I am just going to run up the road ,
you know , " I hoisted myself aboard
the train , and plunged into a Pullman
sleeper and profound meditation.
The journey westward has boon
written up and exaggerated BO much ,
that it ia utterly Impossible to "swell
the heads" of the public nnotho inch ;
"breeae lifter bioezi" has that long
Buffering body stood , and still the
"fiends of the press" whack away ,
giving us the same old doao.
The scenery along the Union Piiol-
fie west to Laramto , the noble expanse
of prairie Ijiag around looao , the oycr
changing telegraph polo , the ilock of
decayed Dutch baronesses with their
liftoon-quart , dirt calcimined tin buc
kets nnd same old Dontr , "Moestaro
woolen aio milb habon , " and "You
like some poolonooaausago , meostare , "
the number of trips the young rod-
beaded barbarian in your car makca to
the ice water tank , becomes so infer
nally monotonous , that the occasional
race wo have with a lame cow ahead ,
Is a delightful relief , only to have de
spondency again eot in , when wo got
gloriously distanced.
The average brakeman is an indiv-
viduul of immense pretensions , the
amount of cold railroad experience
leaking out of him , and the quantity
of stale , worn-out circus slang , ho
USOH , would nauaoato the driver of an
Oahkpsh slop wagon , and now since
lie glitters with the now regulation
liarness , a cheerful gladdening "break"
will occur for the southern overland
route.
A glass-eyed son of Albion , n high-
proof-cockuo'y with the usual loud
ligurod suit , snow-Hhovol shoes and
twirling the inevitable eye-glass
around the fingers of a hand that was
the aizo of a hired man's , "foil up"
against ono of those embryo railroad
directors recently , and listened to
Ilia melodious flow of ancient slang ,
ejaculated , "Why blawst his bloomin'
li'oyea , the fellow has the lingo of the
chain-gang at 'omo you know ; dam-
mol but ho must have been an Aus
tralian laguor , don't you know ? "
With many misgivings I climbed
down .the stops on the olTeldo of the
train at Larumio , fearful of confront
ing -'Bill Nye , " that ideal frontieis-
man , attired In the picturoEquo cos
tume which I , in common with other
habitants of the east , imagined wua
his custom with at least four ponderous
derous Colt'd navies hookodjuround
him , complacently whittling off a sec
tion of "plug" with an Arkansas tooth
pick aa largo as u meat axe. No such
pirate halted me , however , and I
thankfully hunted cover. Bubnequent
investigation showed the mistake ;
this North American land shark whoso
national reputation and ten cent tintypes -
typos adorn the finest rpguo'a galleries
ol our lane' , developed into a mild up-
poaring gentleman wearing a two del
larand a half smile and "allowing up"
an extent of intellectual skating-rink
that conclusively proved him a mem
ber of the noble army of inartym to
the belligerent saucepan. ' The most
formidable weapon ho slings around
"promibcuona" is u pair of pocket
scissors and the general diapoaition of
this Buppoaod Mohawk is so pacific
that you can just walk right up and
stroke him on the neck. Why , I
actually saw him collecting the assess
ment at a prayer mooting , and his fol
low citizens "warmed up" to him and
"put up a chip" every time ho felt for
them with the tin skillet. Us eastern
"ducks" are "away off our baao" re
garding this professional hamor dis
penser.
The city of Laramie presents a
whole raft load of .magnificent possi
bilities , and with the necessary capi
tal , or a government subsidy , could
readily bo developed Into a metropo
lis of terrific proportions. For fur
ther views of a similar nature , inter
view some of the moss-backed old
relics that own the real estate.
Having cause to enquire Into the
probate laws of Wj-ominp , I fouiui
statutory provisions of a character at
once wonderful and exasperating. In
a country whcro puritanical justice
and the neck-tie ooclnblo tvcro nt one
time prcdominont , it BOOIUS simply
miraculous that the early loyisl.itr
nnd constructor of the existing laws
over got away.

The ordinal/ Wyoming lawyer has
saddened , careworn aspect. The
only member of the fnUcrnity here
who presents n lusly appearance is a
big , left-handed rooator , who lot go of
probate matters after loading up tuth
ono dose. Thoblistoringmalcdiclions
of the unfortunate victims of probate
law ought to ccorch the everlasting
daylight out of Iho venerable fossils
who compiled thin mystery. 1 can
easily understand now how petrifac
tions came to bo discovert d out west ,
and why the county hospital llouriHhoa
with an army of par.Uyzort sufferers.
Awakening on the morning of Sep
tember 15th to find ice in the ditches
nnd nn Alaekan temperature driving
thermometers indoors , I was instantly
conriucod lhat the gront , crowding
necessity of this section u a direct air
line connection with the Now Mexican
Central railroad.
The return trip cast will bo nn experience -
porionco which I can anticipate with
placid unconcern , I have no weal h
to guard , no valuable to lay nwako
and tremble for. The nlcepiug car
porter made several grand single-

collected the usual blood money ,
by running ua into a corner with a
