CORSET-MAKING.
Bow Woman's ' WlialelniiQ Prison

nually in St. Louis.
Fost'Dlipalch
The whalebone prison hao had a
succession of fair captives in the past
seven centuries who , like the good
Dohivard , have learned to love their
chains , and if forced to accept freedom
do so with a sigh. As traces of priso
ners' foot prints were loft iu the dun
geon fl ipr at Chilian , so the whale
bone prison ahoirs not only in part but
throughout the imprint of its occu
pants , who have gradually supplied it
with coTiforto that make captivity far
moro endurable and even plcasurab o.
Ono of these prisons cherry color ,
decorated with blue was opened yes
terday that a Post-Dispatch reporter
might Impact its mysteries and learn
thu changes aflicti-ig it.
"Satin cornets i i high art colors , "
said the modielo "form inJi
, an < peu-
sable part of every handsomely dresnod
lady's coatumo this season , though a
fair years ago respectability would
purchase nothing but the white
goods. "
"Who introduced colors for ouch
purposi ? "
"Njbody knows. Goneta were
formerly called stays. Black ones
worn first made in England during
1707 , and shortly after colors came
into uso. These stays were of silk ,
fastened with straps and buckles. The
present fancy for color is therefore a
revival. "
"What does a pair cost ? "
"From SlOto 816 and 818 ; the lat
ter price generally indicating a bridal
corset , which are of pure white. "
'Are the red shades preferred ? ' '
"No , indeed The woman who can
afford it saves enough ioods from each
new dross she buys to have a corset
made to match. Where this notion ia
carried to extremes she will probably
have several dozen expensive corsets ,
representing $300 or more , for that
ono article of costume for a season.
For example , there is the black satin
corset embroidered with red , the rose
with old gold , pale blue and blue ,
jlivo green and rose , gray and rod ,
darkbluu , aud sa'mon ' , crimson and
white , pink and green , light tan and
black , terra cotU and blue , and all the
other combinations that may bo sug
gested. I hose corsets aru lined with
coutil a Frouch mitorial as noaruver-
laating as anything nude. A strap is
Btitchod ncrous the middle of each un
derside which prevents the goods
stretching out of ahapoby thu bending
or brudkirg of whalebones. A silk
braid is used to lace thu b ick. In ad
dition to fancy stitching in a contrast
ing shade , some aurt of flower spray
IB embroidered on the bust fore , or
folds of satin are crossed on it in
triangular foirn. A good many are
trimmed around the tup with narrow
applirjuo point or thread laco. Thu
binding is yononilly of satin h'alshod
in Kensington stitch. "
"What should a perfect figure meas
ure ? "
MOCK MODKL IS TUB VKNUH OB MILO.
She in 0 HE urea thirty-eight inches

waist and thirty-live around the bust.

"Amsrica : and the women of this
republic have the finoat , most erect
Figures in the world. Foreigners roc-
otrnizo them at once bccauso of this
fact. Up to about 12 yoara ajjo there
were no corsets made in America
The first manufactory was catabluhod
iu Norr York , but at present the larg-
rat number cornea from Now llnvcn ,
Hridgrpnrt , Oonn. , Worcester mid
North Brookfield , Mass. The tendency
doncy ia constantly for a better clans
of goods and moro of thorn. Cinapa
were invented some twenty yrars ago ,
and quickly displaced the stiff modern
busk which had boon used to stiffen
the front of the coraot. Up to tlmt
time they had been in ono piece , and
opened only in the baok , which was
laced. They were Very uncoinfortn

worn , the epoon-busk , which wnuun

sion that it improves the form. Sev
eral physicians luivo told tno tlmt it
was very injurious , bccauso the steels
broaden to fully double their width ,
si mo four inches , nt the lower end ,
and are Romowlmt curvod. Thoao
pieces of oteel are not perforated
They accordingly absorb n great deal
of animal hu.tt and generally act up an
inlb tmiation. The corded health
waist , which coinos from Boston , has
very little sato ia this city. The Urge
stores have discarded it as uunrofita-
bio. "
"Thoro ia , and a St. Louia invention ,
too , which has found honor in its own
country , contrary to Now Testament
theory. It ia called n combination
coraet and shoulder brnco , and manu
factured fromheavy white jeans , Lon
don cord having gene oat four years
ago. Made to order it ia generally of
coutil or aatteon , though a few e.Uln
ones are demanded iu thia ahapo. The
brace consists of two thin peif irated
stools ( perforated to prevent absorp
tion ol heai ) connected and hold by
broad clastic from ono to several
Inches apart , graduating ( slightly from
the bottom up. Detachable shoulder
straps to buckle around the arm are
laced to the top of this brace , and arc
padded on the under side ao as tint to
cut the wearer's arm. The brace is
laced either aide down its length to
the curaot , which is cut to fit with it.
Once on a woman it atraiehtcns hur ,
} tivos the chest a chance to breaded by
drawing the shoulders back , and cor
rects weak backs and lungs. "

"Society belles by the score , their
sinters and main mas by the hundred ? .
With the exception of the satin corset
for full dress , this in coming iu uni
versal use , and there is such a demand
already that all the stores nro nulling
it , though ic has boon out only about
a year. An nuprovutnont which atout
women will appreciate is a third steel ,
or busk , placed just under whcro the
other two clasp , thus preventing the
bonding and breaking of these II-CCB.
An improvement recently made IB the
putting of several eyelet * through the
busk to keep it from slipping down
and cutting the goods. Goutil cor
sets in thia shape cost $7 , but they
wear for years. This material is com
posed of very narrow stiipos , crossed
diagonally by hair lines , each stripe
forming an angle , ita length with the
ono next it , Besides those there are
various other ooraots.iticluding French
makers , which eoll from fifty cents to
$3 and $4 , though more of the eighty-
five com quality are bought than any
other. It is probabio that over 100-
000 corseta are sold hero annually to
residents , and the largo country trade
exceeds that several times Sales
huvo increased wonderfully for seven
years past. "
