After a broadside from two of the members of the board of public works , on the relative merits of Sioux Falls Jasper and other stone , st evening saw a mooting of the hrco most important bodies in the city , all upon the all absorbing topic. The first of those meetings waa that of the City Council- A special mooting of the city coun cil was held last evening , for the pur- ) ese , aa stated in the cill , of taking nto consideration all matters pertain- ng to the paving of Tenth street. All the members were present ex cept Metara. Herman and Dunham. On motion the council adjourned. At the same time there waa a moot ing of The Board of Public Works- A mooting of the board of public works was hold last evening , and iho resolution adopted and transmitted by the city council received. Chairman Oroighton oaid , that this communication coming from the city council , ho felt it was binding , even if it had boon against hia judgment. Ho moved to accept the bid of Wm. Mack. Mr. Barker moved , which waa seconded ended by Mr Wilson andcirriod , that the further consideration of this matter - tor bo postponed to Wednesday eve ning , November 8. Board , of Trade. There was also called for the aamo evening a special mooting of the Omaha board of trade. In the absence of President H. G. Clark , Visa President Liningor took the chair and stated the object of the mooting , which waa to hurry up 'tho ' paving of Tenth otrcot in order that a portion of it might bo completed this fall , if possible. An informal discussion of the nub- joot then took place , participated iu by the members of the board and by a number of property holders on Tenth street. One opposed any at tempt at paving this fall , aa it was too lalejanother thought it should begin at once , and arcracd that with such weather as we had last year much might bo accomplished by January 1st ; still another spoke in favor of Mon- dota atone and one man upoko vehe mently against beginning any work until next spiing. Mr. Gibson thought that while the whole paving question had originated with the board of trade , that it had now passed nut of their control be yond mere rccommondatione. Ho } fTerod the following resolution : Itetolved , That it la doomed advlsa- blo to inako strenuous efforts for the paving of Tenth street at once and that this board urgoa the board ol public worka to make the contract for paving at the earliest possible mo ment. TUB CITY r.NoiNKEii , City Engineer Roaawator spoke at length upon the proposition , ' 'I * it practical , undur the law and circum- stancfs , to pave Tenth street this year ? ' Ho claimed that it was not , but that , if paving ia to bo commenced next spiring the contract must bo let at an early day , iu order to complete the job during the summer. The pubhn has no idea of the work re quired to-got out the atone for the pavement or its foundation , nor of the dlfliculty of securing adequate tnmapcrtition. The superstructure will rtquiru 5,000 or 0,000 tona of atone , aud the eub-structuro about tlioo Hitno amount. This will inuVo ovur 10 OCO toua outside of the gravel utid othur noccmry initeml , and wruld ba equal to ubont 1,000 c-ic lojrlo. He alluded to tlo contracts undertaken , by W. II , B Slout aud John Green , and thotimo consumed in filling them. It ia absurd to under take the job before sprint ; . The con tract should bo let uarly , the wurk be gun in the spring and completed iu August , Mr. Rosowatcr also dis cussed the legal difficulties in the way. Unless it ia decided to pave with granite , now legislation ia nccea- saiy which it will take eighteen months to complete. The question is DO WK WANT TO VATEl If eo the contract must bo let at once , Ho explained the taxation for paving , and the inodo of its payment , in five annual installments nt probably C * per cent. Interest , which would make It easy for property owners and enhance the value of their property , ODD of the taxpayers present charged that gross misrepresentation had been made as to the cost of granite ito and threatened to auo out an injunction - junction if it was undertaken. Mr. Lluingor favored the abandon- ana Illinois uontrai. It was agreed to restore the rates from all points in Iowa between Ooun- mont of the idea of laying a permanent pavement this f ll and instead that a TXUfOllAnY PAVKMKST bo laid for the winter , to consist of plank aud bo paid for by subscription. The plaa was talked of , and will probably bo carried out , of laying a fiitoon foot plank roadway on Nine teenth street , to fit tniigly to tbc street cw track , and that Oipt. Mirsh plank rho track , which would uivo a plank road nearly twenty feet wide and save the city from a repetition of the ditcraceful condition of nfTiira last winter , during the reign of mud , The following iraa finhlly offered as a substitute f jr. Mr. Gibsou'a resolu tion and Adopted : Kttdttd , That it Is the aonso of this board and the Tenth street prop erty owner * present that the interests of thi city require the paving of Tenth stteot at the earliest practicable moment , and that the board of public works bo requested to lot the contract for said paving with the lorvst possible delay. Harmonious Concert Full of Discord , Whllo Ihn BrnM Dnnd Pnyn "Glory Unllnlnjikh" A : was announced last week , the political quinlotlo had it all their own way at the republican primaries. The five Gonntorial dictators held ncveral atnr chamber caucuses Kith their trusty drummers , lifers snd trumpot- pri , Saturday nipht nnd Sunday. The Bcoro wao all fuwl for grand bar mony , with Oowin aa basso prohindo , and S undera as fahotto , while lirigga held the trombones , Mandoraon sang contra alto and Millard swung the baton aud directed the chorus , Tlio full rehearsal waa to bo held at 10 o'clock Monday morning , with John M. Thurston aa chief U. P. mutical critic. Although the band had undergone a good deal of drill , the overture waa very discordant after all. While the majority were playing their parts oil right , quito n number were out of tuuo. Before the re hearsal was half ovor" there was a general - oral bnez and growl. AH harmony was at an end. The cauao of all this wai that aomo of the principal performers had been shoved aside and preference waa given to follows who sing very high up on Capitol hill , while thooo who play down in the Third and Fifth wards and ever in Bohemian garden wore dismissed without pay. It became manifest that the political concert which was to take p'aco ' at the city mil at 2 o'clock was to bo an extra select , aristocratic affair. Mike Vloaney , Pat Hawcs , M. Leodor , McGuckin , and other old timers swore that there would bo a day of reckoning yet , and a reliable contraband was hoard to eay that the colored troops had "Dun fightin cnuff V dis yore crowd. " During the opening overture at lalf-past 2 p. m. Isaac Hascall was acting aa musical director , and he , rlnd hard , bat in vain , to keep the ; roupo in harmony. Mike Mcanoy naiated upon singing a solo while the ilillard string bond was performing "When I Can Road My Title Clear. " Some of the band insisted up on Btandlng up while Haa- call insisted that they must sit down and lot Ooutant act as prima donna. Mike Moaney asked whether ho parted hia hair in the middle. ( Gen eral-tiproar. ) The musical director ; hen aakod for an expression by tissue ballots and finally he declared Gout- ant's engagement off , and Col. Smyth entitled to the next score. Smythy hon sang in a very loud voice , "A charge to keep I have , " nnd in re sponse to an encore h sang , "O , no , no , not for Jo. " At this juncture the quintetto acorns'to bo on the point of a general smash up. Political The colored citizana met last night at the city hall , for the purpose of electing delegates to represent ; hem in farmers' and working- men's convention to-morrow. Mr. 0. H. Graham was chosen chairman and Mr. 0. 0. Carey secretary. The following gentlemen were choaen as delegates to the farmers' and workingmon's convention : Henry Curry , 0. D. Bell , P. J. Williams , Thomas Scott and 0. 0. Oaroy. The painters and paper hangers also met last night to select delegates to the Farmers' and Workingmon's con vention. Owing to the place of meet ing being occupied by the republican contention , and soon after by the city council , the majority dispersed at nn early hour , thinking that' ' it was a put- up job by the city council to keep away the workingmsn from the maot- ing. Therefore the mooting was postponed until this evening at 7:30 : at Fire men's hali , with the request from the ohair that each brother painter re quest hiit brother painters to attend this meeting.
