A NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS , Thoru wore two of ua chatting nnd smoking cigarettes nt the corner of Canal and St. Charles streets in that qtinint nnd old city , Now Orleans a city of noror-ouding chatnn , mid of queer phasva of lifo nnd mysteries without number ; n miniature Pftris , with its bijou thwttres in the French quarter , whcro the piny is in French , and the KnglUh language is n foreign tongue ; nnd nhuro the men wear their hats nnd the ladies sip nbsintho tvnd pull' dainty rings of cignrotto smoke from pretty mouths. "NVoll , whcro shall wfe go to night1 ? Morlan nsked mo. 'Grand Opera House , " I suttposlod. "What fira't yon tired of Jiuiau- schok'o diamonds yet ? " "Well , say the varieties. " "Thoro is nothing thcro but the frcftcohiR in the lobby. " " Academy i" Wo amrked nwny in nilmico , nnd flnnlly decided to nuo Mile. Muthildo nt Lo I'otit Francaiso thimtcr , on Olmrtrea ntroat. "If Golson is in the crowd , we'll appropriate him. Ahn ! thorn ho is now. Golson , como lather ! " cried Morlan. A number of young tuon had crossed Cnnal struct , nnd were passing up St. Charles ( utrnrd Common , ethers - ors continuing their wny nlong Canal to Baromio. A handsome , small doli- cnto student emerged from the crowd. Ho had hands ns nnmll and \vhito ns n woman's , long , black hair , n pale , thoughtful face , unit large , calm , ex- prcssivo eyes. I was introduced to liira , and ho graepod my hand wnrmly and firmly. "Iltwo you anything to do to-night , Golson ? " naked Morlan. "Anything to do ? Oh , yea , uonio Infernal thesis , I bellovo ; but hang , the thesis nnd , by Goorgol the dissection , too. 'Whoro nro you going ? " "To the French theatre. " "Wlmt , the absinth nnd the head- ncho ? Come with mo to the college. My little girl will do the tight-ropo from the roof , nnd I'll introduce ) you , " urged Golaon. Wo turned up St. Gh.trloa street to Common , down Common to Bnronno nnd the college. Crowds were beginning - ginning to gather at this point. Wo trended our wny through the throng that preeaod against the railing around the collcgo yard , nnd entered a email door nt the side. Wo climbed four [ lights of dnrk , dismal stairs , nnd tum bled nt the > turnings. Wo felt our wny nlong n hall pervaded by a stifling blackness nnd n musty smell from the dissecting rooms. The light from the street below streamed meagerly through n window , nnd showed us the extremity of the hall. Wo climbed and crawled through a hole in the coiling. Hero the darkness win in tense. Wo found another ladder close nt hand , nud by fueling for the rounds gained the top nnd emerged upon a itoop roof. Wo looked around. Now Orleans ay nt our fcot in all the glory of a starry night. On the nouth wo could ; racn the river winding in n crescent 'orm around the city , and reflecting , ho colored lights from the shipping. Away to the northeast could bo seen , ho dark , flat surface of the lake. To he southeast lay the French Quarter , with its tall , old-fashioned houses nnd ts narrow streets. To the westward Jpper Town stretched nil its wealth and grnndour over u largo area. Un der our feet was the glare from Canal , St. Charles , Camp , Common , Caron- delot , liarormo and Tchonpitouslas streets. A parapet about twelve inches high was all that could have preserved ur 'rom the morgue , if the foot had slip- led un inch , or the treacherous slate lad broken. Throe persons were standing in the gutter against the par apet. Of thooo , two were roiifih-look- ng men ; the third was a woman in ights and short skirts , covered with spauglca and stars and gold lace. The men were engaged withcortain pulleys and cords in drawing to n greater ten sion the wire cable that stretched 'rom the parapet of the college to the wilding opposite. The woman was standing in ( ho shade of the parapet , and looking down abstractedly upon , ho thousands of human beings who jacked the street , and whoso unturned aces , so expressive of anticipation , she seemed to bo studying attentively. "Already hero , Zee ? " asked Golion , n his soft , smooth voice. The woman started and turned quickly toward him , an expression of ntunao happiness lighting up her laco. "I WHS looking for you below , " she said. "I was afraid , but I am strong now. You don't think I will fall , do you ? " "Certainly not. You are very fool- ah to ask such a question. " Ho introduced us ashia friends , and she greeted us pleasantly , She had rather an agreeable face , though wo could not HL'o distinctly , the only ighting being Unit of the stars and the Faint glow from the lamps and torches below. In any event she hud a pleas ant voice and that was nufllciont. She also was small am1 dolicatoand young A shawl WRB thrown over her bare shoulders nnd nrins , but she shivered In the night air. "I woa thinking , Goldy , " she said , and a more decided thivering shook her delicate frame ; "I wonder what they would think , and how they would feel down there , " "Nonsense , littlu Hoe ! " She laughed softly and put her arm through Golson's , and looked up into hia face with a touching tenderness and reliance. She again scanned the crowd , "Well , but aupposo I should. Do you think they'd care } Or would they eay I was n little fool and it served me right' " "What ia the matter , pet ? " HJ-'Oh , nothing nothing whatever , " and she laughed attain musically. "I was simply thinking. I remember that a long time BBO , when I was a child , and my father wan letting tun stand on hia head while ho rode two horses backward around the rinsr and I was terribly friuhtenod once when the horses became wild with fear or something I don't remember what and he caught mo strong and close in his arms as I was falling , and kissed my lipa , my cheeks , and eyes , and forehead , and held mo in his arms for quite a while , and called mo his dear , precious baby. What was I going U toll you ? Oh , yes ; about the man who foil from the llght-ropo. That was terrible ! One end of the rope was pasted ever the roof of n house , nnd carried down the side , nnd , made fast to wooden block underneath. "It had so happened that the block hnd rotted off next the ground , and ( hero was no weight upon it whatever. Well , nnyhow , they tied the rope to the block , nnd the professor was half way across the street when ho began to give nn exhibition of jumping. Sud denly wo saw that the rope wna giving wny. The jerking had pulled the block up from under thti h use , nnd w s dragging it up the aide. 1 ho pro fessor turned quite pain , and eioodnud waited. Ho uamo now slowly with tha ropo. It seemed as if it nov > r would stop slipping ever thn roof like n long , ugly snnko , It soon lucatno tlack , mid it wna of cjoureoimioli harder to balance on it ; but ho nor lo&t his [ > rcceneo of mind , nud atomi perfectly : nlm mid straight. When the bloc * liad nnarly reached the roof it was a two story house the rope slipped oil' , ttiul I heard the block drop to the ground. 1 hid my fnco nnd crouched jown against n wall , and then I lw\rd liim strike the ground like something doAd. Oh , it vrns BO horrible ! " She peered around into the dnrknoas niid shuddered. "Poor follow ! Im full flat on hiu fnco. It was the cruoleat thing ; hat over happened. " She sighed , nnd still gazed abstract edly nt the people below. "Did it kill him ? " "No , not quite ; but ho was delirious 'or novoral weeks. When they picked lim up blood gushed from his nose , UB eyes , and his ears , and a bloody 'roth ' came from his mouth. 1 was a ittlo child then , nnd I druuned of iim every night for tno or throe fears. I dreamed o him ngain hut liuht for the first time in a great while. I thought I went to pick him up , nnd could feel his broken bones ; ratlng against each other , and his jlood-shot eyes otarod wide and cold at mo. " "You are not well to-night , Hoc , " said the man of science , examining icr pulse attentively. Ho became thoughtful. "I don't think you ought , o risk it , " ho said. "Oh , I am not afraid now you are lore , " she said in her charming wny. "I think you hod bettor wait " "Now don't get nai.ghty. I must ; o. I want to go. Why , there's two tundred dollars in that crowd , any- low ; my manager would bo crazy if I did not walk. Besides , I contracted .0 do ono street walk every two weeks n addition to the lofty centre-polo ict every day. Why , I've done the of ty five hundred times nud never lost my Iv.iad , and. why is there dauqor now ? " "But it is more diQicult to see the rope at night , " ho persisted. "I never look at my foot when I walk. " "You are feverish and nervous. " "It will make mo all the more c.u-o- ful. " "Well , walk then , " said Golson , with n shrug of 1m shoulders. "Now , Uoldy , don't look that way. " Ho became cheerful nnd beaming in a moment. The manager appeared on the opposite roof nnd signalled the ; irl to proceed. The attendants at 30th ends examined the fastenings of the rope to see that they were prop erly uccured. They produced trays in which to burn colored ilrva , and leaped lumps of the combuntiblo material upon the parapet. Koo nonntod the parapet with an olastio atop , and threw kiiaea t the shouting crowd below ns the red fires brought out her frail form. She looked very charming and pretty , standing smiling n the intense glare of the light. "Givu mo the polo , " feho demanded smilingly of Golson , holding out a small , pretty hand and dimpled arm. Ho picked up the cumbersome bal ancing pole and placed It in her hands , She lound the center , shook hands with Golson , throw kisaea at the crowd and stopped firmly upon the rope. 3ho BOOH found neo'i pose , took a few steps and halted. She glanced back at the attendants , and anxiously re garded the pile of fire. "You are burning it too fast , " Bho said , "Good-by , Goldy , " and she licked her way ever the narrow ) ridge that spanned the yawning chasm beneath. She was graceful , and walked with considerable ease up- larontly , stopping occasionally to shift ho polo and steady herself. "Sho ia walking slowly and shaky " said of the , o-night , ono men "Is she not walking as well as lanal ? " aakod GoUon , hurriedly , as 10 looked at her steadily. His glance never loft her a moment. "No ; she can beat that. I think she must be in the sulks. " Golson paid no attention to the in sult , and watched her with fascinated gaze , His face was somewhat pulor Jian usual , in spite of the rod glare. He did not move n single muscle. Zoo lad passed the middle of tha street , ho most dangerous plncu and con tinued ht < r walk towarod the other end , 3ho toiled up the incline the rope do- irt'BBing under her tiny , nimble feet , ind at last jumped safe and sound upon the opposite roof , A tremendous , deafening shout arose from the mob , and the plucky { irl throw a bunch of kisses at Golson , The cclor had returned to his face with unnatural intensity , and the look of anxiety had passed. His cheat waa broader and his eyes brighter , Ho simply smiled at Xuo , and did not oven applaud her performance. The shouting below continued. The men made no preparation to roniovo the ropu , but Goluon started for the ladder , "Hold on ; she's coming back , " said ono of the attendants , Golson stopped as if ho "had been shot through the brain , The hard , anxioua look returned , and the deadly pallor came back , "I did not khow that , " ho said calmly and resignedly. Ho resumed hia old position , and watched the girl with intense interest with a gaze in which were concen trated liiH soul and heart and strength and mind a look in which wis ex pressed the profoundcst fooling of u utmng nature. Xoj rested a moment and cgain stepped upon the ropo. She had pro ceeded ab'jut tea font , when ono of tha moil remarked "Shu's Hcarod. " Golaon noticed it ; we all saw it. Her teeth were so tightly compresset tbat in the dueling light we could ecu ridgc.8 in her chieka. Her nootrilo were expanded , Her breathing wan short , and a tremor appeared In hoi hands and knees. Instead of hoi usual erect carriage , there was a per ceptible loaning forward. when she had mndo but n doztn stops nho stopped nnd appeared in doubt , the then apparently made an etlbrt to walk backward , but was evi dently afraid to uudcrtako it. She stopped again , mustered her coarago , threw n quick glance nt Golnon , and rect nimunced her dangerous journey. The rupo trembled nnd swayed under her feet , nnd this way caught n ( twing ing motion that trtoi the nerves of the moat experienced balancers. Whim she hud reicliccl the middle it was imio , atllo ) to proceed , Shu might Imvo crossed safely , hut the ( ire on our side wni exhausted , She had wnlkuil more slowly than usual , nnd thu lire HHB consumed to soon , nndsho could not BOO the rope distinctly enough , She stood Mill for several seooiiiln Thn light behind her con- tiinit > d to burn , but it wns of no uaeis. tauco to her , and immediately after ward it wns nlao exhausted. In another moment she grasped the rope with the other hand nid hung perfectly qu : ) t. Golnon waited but a few seconds , when ho saw that fright had taken the strength from her nrms , so that she could not climb upon the ropo. Ho dashed ofT his hat and grnspnod the rope with both hands nnd throw ono eg across it. Ho crnwled nlong caro- ; ully , that the shaking might not cnuoo the girl to lose her hold. The crowd watched him in breathless silenco. The ropu swuna lower under ; ho doubled weight , and the fastenings - ings croaked and groaned. "Hold tight , my chi'.d , " wo could tear him say to the fainting girl. "Hold o.i , for God'o sake , and I will save you ! " She raised her head and looked nt liim fur n moment , nnd then dropped it ngain between her iirma. Fie up- ironched her slowly nnd painfully , 'or ho was n stranger to the situa- ion , nnd was afraid of shaking her off. At length ho reached her. He whispered something to her , nnd she ookod him full in the face. Ho nl- owed his right knee to remain across the rope , and throw his right hand around underneath to fiocuro a firm told , nnd passed his loft arm round ho girl'n waist. TJio strength of nil nan wns in the supple limbs and clean cut mueclos. Ho draw hnr toward iim. She released her hold , her head [ rooped , nnd nho fainted. "Pny out at the college end ! " ho houtod. His feet were in that direction. It equired four of uu to lot it out. It lipped ever the parapet slowly , nnd ho suspended pair began to bo low- rod. "I'.iy it out ! " ho ohoutcd again.
