On the night of Mnyor llnrriioii't )
reception , a wcok ago Wednesday last ,
when the grcnt crowds oa the otrootn
were attracted by the music ami the
display of fireworks , two little girls ,
nged respectively about twelve and
thirteen years , wandered awny from
their homes on the West Side and
were speedily lost in the crowd , The
children jotnpd in the stream of
'humanity that llovred toward the lake
front , but were unnblo , on account of
Iho dcnso crowds , to Rot further east
than State struct. While tliuy were
waiting on a corner for the procession
of Carter's followers the children were
approached hy a well dressed woman
of mature years and nn elderly rualo
companion. The woman smiled grac
iously , patted both little t'irla on the
head , and after being informed where
their parents lived offered to buy them
some candy.
The entire party , Including the old
man , then adjourned to u dago shop ,
and whili ) tlui little girls munchud
their confcciionory , the woman filled
their cars with stoiies of the great
sums of money rihe would give such
little girls if they would only como
and live with her. The little ones ,
completely intoxicated by the heaps of
candy and tine clothes their vision saw
at the kind lady's homo , agreed to go
with her at once. The party was at
the Northwestern depot in a few inin-
utos later , nnd the ! > o'clock Green
Bay passenger carried them on ruuto
to Crystal Falls , Mich. The train had
scarcely pulled out of the depot when
both children fell asleep. They did
not ngain open their eyes until the
train reached Green Bay. Hero they
xprufiscd repentance for leaving homo
without notifying their parents , nnd
; ho woman , fearing the conductor
would suspect ooincUnng amiss , hud
dled them together in one end ot' Iho
car and threatened them with death
in every form did they make any
outcry. The next afternoon they
readied their destination. Their
abode proved to bo a _ lumberman's
dance house.
Crystal Falls , situated on the bor
ders of Lake Superior in the extreme
northwestern part of Michigan , in a
: iow aottlemont , its principal street
being a forest of pine six months ago.
The lumberman nnd laborers in the
iron mines compose the population ,
and the very few score of frame shan
ties that servo as dwellings do equal
duty as saloons. The locality is wild ,
the donizcns ruthless. In the lowest
den in that depraved gathering ? the
little girls from Chicago vroro brought
jy the procuress. It stormed the
irat night and the house -was un-
visited.
A ball was given Iho following
nicht , and the old jczcbol instructed
the little ones how to act with the
men. Gaudy dresses were fitted upon
.hem . , and with cheeks painted a deep
rod and hair banged they were thrust
out in the ballroom to solicit. Quo
stalwart lumberman , surprised at
hiding the children in such a place ,
ook ono of them aside and obtained
icr story. Ho cautioned her to say
tothing , as the child would certainly
orfeit ncr life did it become known
o the procuress that the little ono had
charged her with kidnaping.
The lumberman at once quit the
dance house and laid the story of the
ittlo girl before a party uf a cozun
Honda who vrero assembled at a
neighboring bar. They were ull
rough fellows , but had soft hearts ,
and when it became known to thorn
hat two little kidnaped girls were in
heir midst and about to bo sacrificed ,
ivory man present registered a solemn
tath to rescue the children or die in
ho attempt. But the undertaking
was full of peril. The dance liouao
was in the possession of a half hun
dred of the worst roughs and bullies
n the camp. All were more or less
trunk and many of thorn were armed ,
They might well bo though capable of
making u desperate rc&istunco , and the
dozen lumbermen know full well they
would resist with detcrminataon the
rescue of the girls.
In this dilemma strategy was ro-
urtod to , and while the revels wore at
ull tide the door was kicked open and
the dozen lumbermen , with cocked re
volvers , ordered all present to throw
ip their hands. The hands wore up.
ittod in the orthodox style of the fir
West , and before the excitement hud
ubsidod both children wore being
jorno swiftly down the street in the
arms of thnir kind-hearted rescuers.
The little ones were provided with ac-
commodationu at the hotel , but in the
course of an hour the roughs and
rounders congregated about the place ,
and the presence of several of the bet-
, or disposed was required to intimi
date any attempt toward regaining
poieesHion of the children.
The proprietor ot the dance house
and his woman raised a large follow
ing , when it was"found necessary to
juard the hotel all night from their
depredations. A gentleman named
Jones took a prominent part in liber
ating the children , and ho won their
confidence and friendship. Early the
next morning some one about the
hotel was bribed by the procuress to
tell the children Mr. Jones was down
stairs and wished to apeak with them.
A s soon as the little girls appeared
they were seized by two men and
hustled into a buckboard wagon ,
were then driven into the woods a dis
tance of seven miles in the direction
of a second brothel , but before that
place was gained , they were overtaken
by a party of lumberman. Tbo chil
dren were ouco more rescued at the
point of the revolver and kept under
closer watch until the arrival of De
tective Simmons from Chicai/o.
Denny was notified of the matter by
telegram , and yesterday morning ho
returned homo with the ItHlo girls ,
who are now restored to their parents
unharmed ,
