Of nil the myatlo arts pothaps non

To got , nt EOiuo fnir understanding ol
this strnngo use ot the human voice , a
reporter ot The Post-Dispatch cillw :
upon and discussed thu subject Ine ,
evening from its practical standpoint
with Mr. Albert O. Duncan , whoae
skill in the art hns an netonislied ntit
doliithtod audience * at Popo'a during
the present week. Mr. Duncan is on
of the youngest as well as uiobt sue
coastal mombora of Ills profession
which ia Raying a good dual , consider
ing the fact that tlioro are only thrro
or four really successful ventriloquists
now living , although many aspire to
nuch honors.
The reporter opened the interview
with the simple question , "How cut :
an ordinary man tvor. become n vcu
triloquist ?
"I do not knosT that it is popsiblo
for every man to succeed in that lino,1'
was the reply.
"Then what do you consider the
proper qualifications ? "
"I cannot ssy. I hnvo atudicd that
matter from observation for aomo
time , but noticed but few thingi po
cnlinr to the members of my protca
sion. I have noted thnt the organs of
speech are wull formed nnd thnt those
who nro nblo to practice it tire generally -
ally short , stout or well formed. Fur
ther than tlint I have observed noth
ing common to the claso. "
> lin it a natural gift or a cultivated
ntt , one that everybody with good
lunga need throat and mouth can
ncquiro ! "
" 1 should rather call it a gift , nl
hough it requires constant cultiv.v
ion. "
"How did you cultivate il ? Are
there any books on that niibject ! "
"yes ; tlioro nro a number of works
n which pretensions tire made , but
I have found none of them of the
sligliteBt benefit in inc. In fact , they
rather had i tendency to confueo and
discourage mo. "
"Well , then , how did you learn itf"
"I'll just toll you. Ever since I
wan a small boy I had the habit of
necking equuEtling pigs , dogs , frogs ,
crying children and screaming wins-
Ics. In thin childish sport my voice
cccivod line training , and putting it
o the various testa I may aay I ncci
dentally discovered thnt I possessed
ho power of locating the sound elso-

"Ifovr did you mako. shis discov

'I can't toll you now exactly. It
came to mo gradually , I had often
thought it nouudod away from mo
whi-ii T growled at dogs or mowed in
: ho presence of cats , and finally other
people took notice of it nnd began to
call mo n ventreluquiat. You know I
won a boy then , and did not oven
know what they moant. "
"How long have you been upon the
regular ntago ? "
"Only about three yenra. "
"How long before that was il that
you became conscious of your ability
to control your voica in thin man
ner ? "
"About thrco years. "
"How old wore you then ? "
"Tlut was sixteen years ago ; I am
now twenty-five ; I was nineteen.
That is the date , you understand , of
ny first appearance in public. My
roico had been gaining strength for
tome time , and I had amused my
ricnus at private parties time nnd

ivordo into the mouth of ono that were
lalculntcd to precipitate a row. Then
s the two were about to clinch and
have it out I would make Iho offender
pologisso "
"Thon what would you do ? "
"That depended on circumstances.
Sometimes I would stop nnd explain ,
"lut my common coursn was to [ jot -
way as fast as posaiblo. "
"And would you succord in all this
without being discovered ? '
"Oh , yia ; don't ' you ni'o from my

an evening , but I don't hko it to

"Docs the wotk over seem tiresome

It is never monotonous , because I
very it to suit the occasion , but when
the weather is bad as it was yesterday ,
heavy and oppressive , I moin , it is
hard work. Then I felt as if I w anted
