Novel Teat on the Pontioy'- Kailroad. r Coaches IlluuiinaU d by Jfllcotric L'fihta ' for the Pirat 'L'lmo in this Country. Tlio Exjxrhnont Highly Sacce&ti'u - ThoEjitsm Umd. FhllyiMphU PrcM. For several days past Dr. Dudley electrician of the I'oiinsylvania rail road company , has been actively engaged gaged in applying electrical apparatus to ono of tlio company's pansotiL coaches at .Jersey city , lor the pur pose of testing the legibility tf the uaoof electricity in lighting C'Ua in the place of gas , \\hich is now used Yesterday , nil the arrangements hav ing been complete for a test , the car \viis attached to the train leaving Jer sey City at 3:10 : p. in , , nnd made tin trip to Philadelphia , arriving hero al GlJJO. As noon as darkness net in the electric carbons wore sot nthme , and a most beautiiul light waa the result. The party who came over on the car from Joraoy City wore all electricians , or in some manner Interested m the experiment. They were Walter B. Whiting , preai- dent of the Light and Fotco company of the United States and Canada- George W. Lock wood , president ot the Kallway Electric Lighting com pany , and A , 1' ] . Smytbe , treasurer William Lnchhtn , engineer to the company holding the .Kauro'a Electric Accumulator patent ; 1' . 1' . Qimckon boss , and Dr. Dudley , electrician ol the road. Inasmuch as this is the liist test of the kind ever made in the United state * , a description of the plan is interesting. Stored electricity is no longer u hypothecs , but a demon strated fact , as alunrn by the London and Brighton railroad in England , which for the p.iai tun months has been lighting ita cats by means of otorod electric.ty. TUB UAH AT TUB STATION. The car seen last night at the Broad street station ia which the teat w made WIIB an ordinary passenger coach. There woio uuven electric lamps in the coach with two burners to each lamp. The electricity waa supplied from a reservoir underneath the car , butter known to the BCientilio world aa F.uiro's Electric Accumula tor. Electricity waa transmitted to iho carbons by wirca on either eido of the car , connected with tlio accumu later , und waa cut oil'or aupplied at will by a simple key. The accumu lation in which the electricity was stored last ( ironing constated of a long woodt-n wuti-r tiijht box underneath the middle cf thu coach. 'Incased in this box were a number of lead plates. At ono cud was the positive and at the oilier the negative pole of the batteiy. Each plato ia coated with rod lead mixed with acidu lated watnr. After being perforated foratod with small holes about throe-sixteenth of au inch in diameter , a , sieve of parchment iu placed on each r.ido of each plato and the plato ia then encased in a cloth jacket , with the exception of ono end , which is left uncovered to form nn elec trode. The plates In the box wore parallel to each other , and their oloc Erodes stood up at each end. The electrodes were all connected together at each end , and connected with i brass terminal , through which the oloc trie current was supplied and drawn out. After the firat charge of elec tricity nan boon stored in the accumulator later , which is done from a dynamo machine , the rod load coating com pletely changes its nature , being con verted on the positive plates into per oxide of lead , nnd on the negative plates into a spongy , metallic state , ivhich absorbs , retains or throws out .ho electric current as need bo. The accumulator sctn last evening was about three foot kngandone wide and the lifo of the carbons used in connection with It covered a period of about 3,000 hours. The entire ac cumulator contained sixty volts of minion , or two volts to each coll. J'ho light produced waa npft , bright and clear and equal to oight-CAiidle uowor , and was supplied two.thirds cheaper than gan or oil. Every car can bo supplied with an accumulator charged with'tho amount < f electricity leaked from dynamo bivttery , or ono accumulator will mpply a train. The oar when lighted lust evening iroaontod a very brilliant appearance , ind ono could road nmtaspuperinany cat therein. There van no Dicker or laroto Iho light , and It burned with i persistent regularity of ilamo Taken iltocethor , it waa u numtauccoaatulde nonstration of its utility and feasibil- ty , and will probably bo universally adopted after Dr. Dudley makes his oport to the company , although ho leclined to apeak on that subject last evening sayinj. ; , ho would repot t first o the company. The other electric- ans preaunt did not hcaitata to pro- it a grand aucccax. MiTrrylntf Uicli.
