Omaha , TILDEN'S NEW PALAOK ' The Old Statesman Proposing to Llvo \ iYorV Letter to I'hiHdclplili Hint * While the unsubdued pashns of the Trtmmany at * Irvinp hall tribes are drilling their Bedouins for active sor- vlco nt the state democratic conven tion nt "Undo " Syracuse , Sammy" Tildon , Now York's political khedivc , is in retirement , wrestling with n pri vate architectural problem , A year or so ago ho decided transform his famous Urnmorcy park retreat into a mansion that would throw Vandor- bilt'n now palace completely in the shade , At that time it was Enid that the house , with its owner nnd other curioo , was to form a sort of matrimonial menial prize package for a St. Louis belle , but aa there is no nursery in the now edifice the story is not behoved to have boon made out of whole cloth , lie that na it may , the mansion is un doubtedly the hobby of Mr. Tildon's life , nnd when completed it will have cost something like a half n million dollars and eclipse in artistic finish anything of the kind in this country. For months past ho has spent ono or two days every week In hia architec tural temple , and when ho does not appear on the scene of action ho sends down his tri-weekly documents of in struction from his $5,000,000 place on kho Hudson. When ho began the alterations Mr. Tildon intended to spend about $50- DOO on them , but that sum was swell ed to $300,000 , nnd it is thought that $200,000 more will bo required to fin ish the decorations. The building fronts on Gramercy Park nnd takes in No. 15 , Mr. Tildon's old house , which lias been remodeled throughout and united to an adjoining building of the same size. This gives the now palace , which is four stories high , a frontage of sixty and a depth of ono hundred nnd ton feet. Traces of the Gothic style of nrchl- ; octuro nro noticeable in ninny parts of .ho building , but no conventional rules liavo boon carried out. The architects lave worked under the personal super vision of Mr. Tilden , and the result is ono of the most unique nnd beautiful residences in America. The front of .ho building in based on brown sand stone from Belleville , Now Jersey , with n superstructure of delicate pink Scotch sandstone. The prevailing .ono of the facade is pink , nnd a bril- iant contrast is brought about by nar row bolts of Mnino granite , which epurato the native nnd imported sand stone. These black granite belts nro lighly polished and prettily engraved. The arches and window trimmings are nil of black granite. There are two entrances to the front of the mansion , and the main ono , heading into Mr. Tilden's old house , 3 remarkably beautiful. Four col umns of polished red mottled granite support the handsome porch over the nain ontranao , and above those col umns are four colossal feminine busts , representing thoaousons. TheRO were carved from Scotch granite and are trained in graven foliage , typical of spring , summer , autumn and winter. A slab of black granite , so highly polished that its under side reflects iko a mirror , forms the top of the porch. The stolid trimmings of the porch , and indeed of the whole front of the IOUHO. are beautifully and elaborately carved , and the designs are AS quaint aa they nro varied. In the countless clusters nnd garlands of foliage ore birds , rabbits , eqnirrols , frogs , toads , turtles , snakes , lizards , bugs and buc- .orfliea , the whole forming n morvol- oualy executed study in natural his- ; ory. It would take hours to exam- no the foliated carvings in the pink sandstone , for those carvings are rep resentations of no less than 15' ) varie ties of foliage , ranging from fern nnd clover to maple and oak. In this nans of foliage are 300 animals , birds , reptiles and insects. Between the two immense bay windows dews is found one of the most striking lieces of decoration on the building , n a largo panel of brown sandstone are live niches containing the heads of Shnkspearo , Milton , Goethe , Dante and Uonjamin Franklin , the latter occupying the center , with the others at the corners of the tablet. The ligh roof is broken by dormer windows dews of modern Gothic ctylo , and inials ornament the coping. Notwithstanding the artistic beauty of the exterior cf the mansion , it is ho interior that will excite the most general admiration from lovers of pro- use decoration , The front rooms , n > arlor and a library , Hank tlu * hull- and one of the hugo bay windows allorda light for each department The library , which is twenty feet wide nnd sixty long , is the largest room in the house. Mr. Tilden has ono of the largest and most valuable "ibraries in America , and the twenty houaand volumes it contains will iill ; hia now apartment to overflowing , Hie bookcases nro of eolid rosewood , richly carved , The main parlor is foot long and twenty wide , and .ho . ivprk of frescoing it nnd the li- jrary is not more than half done. Of all the rooms in the house , however , lie dining hall is the most handsome. [ t is thiity-fivo foot equaro and has a raultod ceiling. This is believed to jo the finest dining room in the coun- ; ry , and although $35,000 liavo buen expended in decorating it the work is not near finished. florond Edition of Jolj. Mm. DKAH Sin : At the present time much is being said and written in re gard to eilk culture , and indeed It is high tiino the subject was agitated in the United States , for if once develop ed it will furnish lucrative employ ment at their own homos for thous ands of women and children , and add largely to the natural development of the land , Perhaps a few practical ideas in regard to the relative value of the different kinds cf mulberry for silk culture , front ono who Ia engaged in the business will bo of interest to some of your many renders. For the northern stales I place at the hon < l the Russian , brought to this country about soon ycnta ago y Russian Mononitcs. Firat , because it is perfectly hardy mid will thrive in nny soil. Second , it is a rnpid grower. Third , it produces hirgo quantities of leaves which furnish silk ot' the fin- ojt quality. Fourth , it produces iho best fruit ot nil the mulbenies nnd the most of it. It can bo grown to the height of forty feet and 'from three to five feet in diameter , or can ba _ sheared to any ci7.o or shape you like , There nre aloycn vnriotios of the Morua Alba , or white mulberry. Among them nro the Morua Tnrtnrica , Morns Multicantis , Moms Mpscttn , Morua Japnnic.i , English white nnd others. Tlio only hardy mulberry nmong the above named parts of the Morns Tartarian from Russia , where it has long been uacd for nilk. It produces a rodish white fruit of inferior quality. For the south there is but little difference in value of nny f the Morns Alba varieties. The Morns Multicantis produces Iho largest loaves , but the common old English ia hardy nnd is planted largely. The following tnblo will ohow the relative value of the loaves used for silk : Eighteen pounds of Mullicnulis make ono pound of silk , 1C pounds of Eng lish white , 14 pounds Morettn , 13 pounds Tnrtnrica , 13 pounds of Albrn Rosin , 12 pounds of Jnpanici , 13 pounds of Russian , Nearly nil of the nilk producing countries of the old world have their favorites for silk , In China and Japan the Mullicaulis is said to bo the best , while Franco clings fondly to Morus Alba Rosin. In Italy the Marettn leads nil others , while the German thinks tlio Morus Migra has no equal oven if it dees produce silk of n course quality. Soil and climate have much to do with the different varieties , but if wore to plant two acres it mattora not in what part of tlio United States , ono would bo the Russian , and then if you tire of silk culture Its fine fruit will more than pay for labor nnd expense - ponso of growing Never plant the common American or Morus Rulirn nor the Paper mulberry , and I would not ndviao planting Morua Nigrn for silk culture. Plant ono year old tree : . iVvoid cutting ] in they are not sure. In conclusion let mo aay that in Europe and Asia the mulberry is con sidered the most valuable of nil trees , for it produces the most delicious fin it. Ito timber is used in the arts and for fuel , the bark nnd fiber for paper and fabric silk. At Boino future time I will Bond you an article of the different kinds of silk worms. G. J. OAIU'ENTEU.
