in the transfer of the private railways
to the government has stipulated the
industry a good deal , as the compa
nies , in view of covornment purchase ,
have for years past kept their outlay
on renewals nithin as narrow limits

time past the Prussian government
has boon giving out very largo con
tracts for railway material , There
han nlao been n very considerable
increase of constructive ) activity
in Germany. The extension
of mining in the coal di triots has re
sulted in important orders for appli
ances , hoisting apparatus , and so on ,
these structures being made of iron.
The destruction by tire of old coalpit
appliances and sheds hits also increased
the demand , an in all reconstructions
of this nature wood is being replaced
by iron. I'ho improvement uf the
loading and transporting arrangements
in the cnal districts again has given n
considerable impulse to the iron in
dustry. The extension of subsidiary
railway lines and tramways has not
only resulted in a largo orders for the
metals on which to run , but for small
bridges. While the homo demand
has thus greatly increased , producers
bomc able to take full ndvantngo of
the protection nflbrded by the import
duties , the export trndo in largo
girders , towing chains , and other
ironwork has , of course , remained
subject to the iluctuations of the in
ternational market , and has derived
no advantage from the activity of the
inland markets. The wagon
building industries have boon
; ho most benefited by the
argo orders given out on account
oc u'io state railways. The proprietors
of the rolling workq have strengthened
their position by combination for the
regulation of prices , while the large
pig iron merchants on thnfr side have
rnndo business more difficult for manufacturers
ufacturors , combining undnr an agree
ment to restrict each dealer to supply
ing the largo works within certain dis
trict limits , thus preventing competi
tion. It has for years been n subject
of complaint that the German iron
masters supply foreign buyers with
railway metals at lower prices than
they charge- inland buyers , and this
grievance if ) now extending to other
branches of the iron trado. To sum
up , the ( government purchase of the
railways and the coalition of the great
producers are the chief factors in re
gard to the present apparent prosperi
ty of the IlheniBh-Westphalian iron
industry ; but the demand for the homo
railways will bo fully covered in a rel
atively short time ; and with the con
siderable additions which are menti-
while being made to the producing
capacity , over-production will , sooner
or later , again bo apparent in Ger
many , and renewed depression set in.
