I guess pa and m\ were pretty rid
one time , for when they caino to Cali
fornia it wns on tlioir wedding tour ,
and cost lota canio by the way ci
Now York and Washington and Pana
tna City , in a steamboat ; and ma
brought a maid to wait on her , and pa
had a aorvant named Jim ; and flicn
wo got to California I say wej I'm
only 14 now , but I was not born then ,
though that don't mittcr I guess pa
had lota of inonuy. I was born at the
Lick House , and you ought to ace my
biO y clothoi , Jones Co. havon'l
the kind of goods them wns , bccnuso
Miutd has drAt led thorn all to pieces.
Maud is the baby. Six years old
Maud i ? , and it won't bo long buforo
she will bo a clerk for Jonea it Co.
Firat babiea nhv.tya huvo the nicest
things. Ma any first babies are like
second wives.
Well , I nm of the opinion that after
PA wont into his houoo on Van Ness
avunuo ho wont into stock , whatever
that moans. Going into stock must
bo a curious business ; and sometimes
pa came homo looking splendid , and
wanted to buy everything , and
laughed at ma for bohiu so mean , and
not getting better clothes ; and then
ho wanted to drive in the park and go
to the theater. Ono day ho came
homo with a brand now carriage and a
span of long-tail horses and a conch-
man and footman. Then sometimes
pa citno homo and looked very blue ,
and talked about stocks , and 1 began
to watch pa , and noticed that some
times when lie laughed the loudest ho
looked as if ho wanted to cry , and
then ho cold the horse ? , and then the
house , and the furniture was sent to
the auction , and ma felt very bad , and
pa wasn't like himself any more , and
never told mo alorics nor kissed mo ;
and once when Maud was asleep in Ins
arms ho khsed her and cried , and
when I told ma she cuesscd pa did
not feel very well , and then she cried.
After thia vc wont to a board-houso
a naaty , musty boarding-house.
Everything was well enough , only a
boarding-houso ain't like homo.
Then the baby came , and it died ,
and ma almost died ; and I hunrd pa
say to the man that kept the boardinn
house that ho was pretty tiltht up , but
it wasn't ' all coming out right ; and the
nest dry j a didn't hnvo any watch
nor any slcovo buttons. 1 didn't
seem to notice it , because I saw that
maybe ho had sold thorn to pay board ,
and I heard pa and ma talk away in
the night , and sometimes ma cried ,
and pa would look in the morning just
as if ho hadn't slept a wink , and 1
don't believe ho had. Once it was
dicadful. Pn c.imo homo tipsy , and I
never saw ma fuel so bad never ; and
then they talked it over , and finally
ma went homo to grandpa's in Now
York , with Mnud , and I stayed with
pa to go to school Then pi went to
live in rooms and eat at restaurants ,
and pa stayed out lto nights and I
guess ho drank more than was good
for him , and I thought something had
got to bo done. So I eaid to pay one
day :
"Pa , lot'o go into business , and
open a at re , or a thread and needle
store , jus' ' , such as women keep and
little girls help in. "
And pa laughed , and oaid ho would
think ot it , and when ho cnmo homo
that night I asked him if ho had
thought about it , and ho 0aid ho had
not ; and I said ho had better , and ho
said ho would ; and that morning ho
didn't go out , but stayed at homo ,
and v/roto ma a long letter. So next
day I went into a store on Polk street ,
kept by a nice old lady who had a bad
husband , where they sold overythi-'g ,
and she said in French they cillod it
lingerie. I did not know what she
meant , because it was French , and I
asked her if she did not want to sell
her store , and nho snid :
' 'Do you want to buy a store , little
; 'irl ? " And I paid : "My pa does. "
And she smiled and iuid aho guobscd
the sheriff would have a ctoro to sell
n a few days. I said I would toll pa ,
because ho knew Mr. Nunan , the
Bhonil' It was one of Mr. Nunan's
men that sold pa's house and furni
ture for him.
.And the nest day I told pa about
store , and what a nica ono it was ,
and ho had been a dry goods man
once and had hr.d a lurgn store and
sold silk dress gomlu an-t velvets and
furs and lace worth more than § 1,000
apiece.
I don't exactly know what pa did ,
but I think something "turned np" a
few days aftcrwardu , for I heard him
say ho had mudu a "raise , " and ho
showed mo more than § 1,000 in gold
and notes , and for a day or two lie
carried them in n side pocket and
mostly kept his hand over thorn , for
fear they would jump out and lly
away ; and pa bought rnu como shoes
and a. hut and fitulf for iiprona , and 1
made them mynolf. and J never saw
pa look ao hap ( y MIICD ma wont anay ,
and ono day hu ( said to nn. :
"Vovio , I have bought -ho atoro on
Polk street , and you are to bo my
saleswoman and partner. "
And sure enough , in a few days wo
wont into the store , and over the
door wan a great big oign < jf "Jones t
Co , " and pa said I was the "Co. "
And when I said , "And HO , pa , you
are Jones ? " ho blushed , and 1 guess ho
didn't like his old friends to know
that ho wan Moiling needles and thread
and tape and things. Wo had two
snug little rooms in the back of the
store to sleep in , and I made pa's bed
and swept out the rooms and tidied
things. At first pa shut up the store
when ho had to go down town on
business , but after a w lulu I tended
't , and when there were two custom
ers in the store I waited on ono , and
it wasn't long before I could maku
chungu and sell things almost tui good
ad pa could ; and by and by when ho
wont down town T tended store , and
wo had splendid times. Wu wont out
to a nice place across the otrccit for
our meals ; I tended atoro when pa
went , and pa tended store when I
went.
Ono day pa came in and looked
dicadfully troubled , and then I said ;
"Pa ain't I nnd don't
, a partner , part *
ners have u right to know everything ,
and aint you hiding something about
Jones & Co. "
And then I found out that pa had
bought too many things for the oloro ,
and that a note for $1,000 had to bo
paid , and that'd what madu pa foul
bad , And then I thought and won
dered how I could got ? 1,000 ; and I
kept on thinking over overbody that
I guessed had § 1,000 , and evorjono
tint I guessed had it I guessed would
not lend it to pi. And then I thought
about the rich Mr , Flood , and naitt :
"I will go down to his lank and gut
it , fur ho'a cot inure- than a ih.iujam !
mi'Iions ; and don n to the Bank of Nevada
vada the collar is full of gold , and ,
( if course , ho don't ito it all the time ,
and before Mr , Flood wants it I'll
take it back and pay the interest. "
And then 1 jumped up and hurrahed
for Jones t Co. , took my beat bonnet
and put on my gloves , took off my
store apron and combed my hair , and
got into a < nr ; went to the Nevada
bunk , told the clerk I wanted to bor
row 81000 ; and hu laughed and said
ho guessed I had bolt6r see Mr. Me-
Line , t asked who Mr. McLino was
and the clerk said Mr. McLano was
the president and was in the back
room , and 1 went in the Inck room ,
and Mr. McL-xno said :
"Well , little girl , what cm I do for
you ! "
And I eaid ; "I until to borrow
S1000 ? "
Mr. Mclnno opened his eyes and
turned his chair around and looked at
mo and said : "A thousand dollars , "
with as much surprise as though SIOOO
was all the money ho had in the bank.
Then Ibog.ni to got scared and cried ,
and then 1 told Mr. McLauonll about
pa and "Jones & Co , " und what wo
wanted to do with the money , and I
would piy it back to him ; and ho
looked kinder puzzled , and asked mo
what pa'd name was , and I told him
and where the utoro was , nnd all about
ma and Maud , and how the b iby died ,
I guess that was not very much like
business , and I don't ' know what Mr.
McLinu M anted to know nil that for.
Then ho looked at mo again , and I
juoas ho wasn't going to lot mo have
the money , when a gentlemen at the
other desk come np to whore I waa sit
tiiH' on a chair , nnd Mr. McLaunsaid :
"Well , Flood , what do you think of
thin young merchant ? "
And then I know it was the rich
Mr. Flood ; and I looked into hia oyca ,
and ho said :
"Lot her have the money ; I will
indorse her note. "
Then I jumped up nnd kissed him ,
and ho kissed me ; and Mr. McLinu
nude a note for ninety days , and I
signed "Jones & Go. " nnd Mr. Flood
wrote hia name on the back of it. 1
took the inonoy away in a canvas bag ,
that Mr. McLino said I nmat bring
back , and I took the money to pa ;
and didn't ho look Hurprjsud when 1
poured out the great big § 20 gold
pieces on the counter ? Tnea 1 told
him what had happened at the bank ,
and when I asked him if he didn't
think 1 waa n pretty good business
woman after all I guess he felt real
ashamed.
After thia I never seen any ihing'lilto
it titich loti of carriages and such
nice ladico kept coming every day ,
and most all of them traded with mo ,
und pa was just ns happy as ho could
be. Jones tt Co. was making Iota of
money. When I took Mr. Flood's '
money back I juat marched right
through the bank , piat the big conn-
Lois , into Mr. McLino'u room , and I
took very good care to let the clerk
that laughed nt mo before soothe lug
Mr. Flood waa in there nnd Mr. MoLine -
Line , nnd I opened the bag. Mr.
Flood came up und laughed nnd Mr.
McLean laughed , and J hoard Mr.
Flood toll Mr. McLano they would
liavo the lunch to-day. And then
Mr. Flood told mo if I wanted to bor
row money again not to go to any
other banks but to como to his , and I
thanked him , nnd Mr. McLiino brought
my note cancelled by a croat blue
"Paid" stamped across the fnco right
over whore 1 wrote "Jones it Co. "
Then 1 told Mr. Flood that when wo
Eolt able to send for mal should come
over and borrowsomu more money because -
cause I wanted to buy u house for ma
and M.iud , so that they wouldn't have
.0 go into any more nasty boarding
IOUSPH , and Mr. Flood said J should
Iwo all the money I wanted.
When wo eent for ma nnd Maud ,
undpii guvo ma the mcnoy to come ,
and eo wo didn'tjharp to boirow any
more ; iud wo took u nice cottnue , not
very near the store , for pa didn't want
ma to know about Jones it Co. ,
Iicuyh I was just crazy to tell hor.
F\ir ocvoiul duyn wo fooled her. She
.hought pa had a stern down town and
L wax guiiu ; to schuol. I told lota of
ibs about being detained nt school ,
going down town , and all sorts of
stories to nccounl , for being homo late ,
Dno day who should I EDO coining into
.ho store but mu ,
'TJave you any peinl shirt buttons ,
.ittln girl ? " said ma.
"V'ts , ma'nm , ' sttid I , looking her
light squate in the face.
' Goodness gracious ! " said ma. "Js
; hut you , Vevie ? "
I said , "l ei { pardon , ma'am , what
did you want ? " And then ma looked
it mo uguin ,
I had n nlorn apron on and a small
cap like u French girl ; and become I
wasn't very high pa bought mo a pair
jf wooden brogixim , with felt buttons ,
into which 1 alippod my feet , and
made mo four or live inches taller ;
and ma starodut mo , nnd then laughed
iiid said ;
"Oh , I beg your pardon , little girl ;
, 'ou look so much like my daughter
j'onoviovo that I thought you wore
her. "
Then I hoard pa snicker down bo-
lind the counter , lie had seen mo
come in nnd ho hid. Just as soon as
: na wont out pa jumped up and
aughcd nnd suid : "Snatch oil' your
upron an cap , Vovio , nnd run round
; hu block and got homo buforo your
mother. "
I did oo , and when ma got home
she was the moat surprised person you
over saw.Voknow this thing wouldn't
ust , nnd BO that night wo told ma nil
nbout thu house o "Jones it Co , , "
und ma kiaaed pa , nnd eaid ho was n
noble follow , nnd "just an good as
gold , " and that she "never was so
: > roud of him in all her life , " and fell
: o kisoing him and crying and taking
on , I never BIIW nm not ao foolish in
all her life , nnd pa said nho WUH "milk
ing love to him over again. "
Well now the story is nbout over ,
Mu came down to thu ctoro to help ,
At flrat she looked kinder shoopiah ,
especially when some lady came in she
lud known nt the Lick house ; but she
aoon got ull over that and biyan to
naku bonnets , and we hud n millinery
store , and then uhe insisted upon sav-
ng the oxpensa of a separate houno ,
and wo moved into u larger store next
door , with nice rooms fixed to live in
and n nice show window for bonnets ,
and little Maudio is beginning to be
handy about , and all of us work , anil
wo are just us happy ns the days are
long , and wo have lots of inonoy.
I luvo never aeon Mr. Flood but
once since , when I wont donn to Mio
tnuk unknown to pa , nnd told Mr.
Flood nnd Mr. McLino that any lime
they wanted to borrow $1,000 "Jones
A Co , " would lend it to them ; and
they laughed and said : "Couldn't
toll stocks might go down , " Ami
then Mr. Flood said : "If all the
people ho had given nnd loaned money
to would pay it back nsT had ho didn't
think ho would get busted in n long
time. "
And then I saw the clerk that
laughed nt me , and I smiled nt him
and bowed ; and since then ho hn *
boon buyinir all nisglovoaat the store.
1 told him I thought he used n grcal
many pairs of gloves , and he snid they
wore out very fantcounting _ money ,
He is dreadful particular nbout Ilia

store but me he is sometimes half an
hour picking out just thu kind ho
