GnlUiron-
Otccola Sentinel ,
In connection with the White
Breast Bottom , lovrn , atcrni , we wiali
to apeak of the heroic conduct of Mrs ,
Carey , a youn married Indy , who
waa atoppuig with Mrs , SVilcs for the
night. About D:30 : or 10 p. m , the
banks of the crook bognu to ovotllow ,
and soon the water began coining into
the house , the _ whole bottom
was a black and roaring body of wa
ter ; the rain was pou.'ing down in
torrents ; the cloud overhung the sky
like a velvet curtain , and the thunder
was ten 1 tic. Mrs. Carey took 0110
Httlo boy , nqod about 0 , and Mtj.
Wiles' baby , but 0 weeks old , loft the
house and started for the high ground ,
lurching the garden fence , perhaps
100 i\ot ) from the house , she found the
current so strong tlmt site could not
keep her footing. Her clothes became
entangled In a harb wire fence.
Fortunately she was at the foot of
a tree. Helping the boy to climb the
trou she handed him the baby to hold
a moment , The waters wore raging
all about her , and wore rapidly rising ,
She must act quickly. With great
presences of mind she disengaged
herself by tearing her dross from her
person , ami swung herself into
the tree. Assisting the boy to climb
further up oho took thobabv and hold it
and herself by ono foot and one hand
to that swaying tree for three long
hours , and till rescued by men , who
swam in to her and brought her and
the children away by the aid of ropes.
When the men reached hnr she eaid :
"Save the children first. " The heroism -
ism of this noble little woman who
thus saved these children the chil
dren of another deserves to bo men
tioned in song.
