JOE MURPHY'S MISTAKE.
A Lone Fisherman Wlio Fooled the
Irish Oomodlan ,
San Francisco Call ,
The story of Joe Murphy's ( the
actor ) experience while out fishing
with AIox. Bad lain * uid Fult. Berry ,
is being told in the clubs , on 'Change
and in the green rooms with so many
variations , that for the sakn of history
the only true and correct account is
hero 'given Murphy and Berry wore
asked , with Dr. Brown , to go up to
Badlam's ' ranch for a quiet fishing
jaunt over the Fourth of July hoh-
dayn. Near Badlam's house he has a
little carp pond , whore ho had fixed
up a most ingenious dummy "lono
fisherman. " The Bluffed figure
was Buppliod with slouch hat , hob
nailed brognns , pipe and fishing
outfit. The figuios sat cross-legged ,
holding a long bamboo polo , in con-
ncclion with which Badlam had ex
pended his ingenuity. The butt end
of the polo was cunningly attached tea
a little ovorcnst water wheel , mudo of
oyster cans and propelled by the lit
tle stream supplying the pond. The
revolution of the water wheel caused
Iho lone finhormun's polo to be jerked
uulcntly out of the water and thrown
luck again at slow regular intervals ,
Speaking of the pond , which Murphy
had not yet scon , Badlam bewailed the
trouble tramps and others caused him
by fiahing out of the pond right un
der liia noao , "They are getting DO
cheeky now , " said he with a sigh ,
"that they won't move when yon tell
'cm the time. If they only fished
thu stream like a true sport , I wouldn't
mind , but to haul 'em out of the
pondl why , it'a daughter. "
oo Murphy , as regards fishing , is a
true sport , and Badlum'a story excited
his utmost indignation. After dinner
lie happened to walk down near the
pond , und euddonly stopped -it just
such a night as his host described.
Rapidly getting mad ho slowly ap-
proachud the lone fisherman until
within a few feet of liia back , when
he yelled in a voice calculated to
frighten the man into the pond :
"Hollo , you rascal , have you got a
permit to fith here ? "
The lonely one did not move for a
second , and then , with a sudden , un
expected jerk he lushed Ills pole and
line over his head , the hook narrowly
cncapiiit. thu irate comedian'u jaw an
it swung back.
"Look hero , you blasted fumbler , "
Murphy cried , as lie jumped hack to
escape tlio hook , "Say , did you hear
what I said to you ? "
Evidently the man did not hear ,
'or , after letting his line sink dowrun
the placid watora , it was again , with
startling suddenness switched out ,
and again thrown into the water ,
Choking with indignation , Murphy
puttered , "You blnnkoty blank fool ,
; ot up hero and face me , and I'll tons
rou into the pond for your blank in-
lolonco. "
The lone fisherman's line switched
out of the pond and spiinklcd Joe
with water , but vras again thrown into
ho pond by the unmoved fisher ,
ilurphy tried to speak again , but his
cclincrs wore too much for him , Ho
rushed back to the house , and ex
claimed , "Aloxthero'B ! arascal tramp
lown there , fishing the pond dry , and
10 won't butlgo for inn , ( live _ mo
cave , and I'll thump him as ho fits. "
At these words Berry jumped up
like a madman , grabbed a Winchester
illo. and made n rush for > lie pond ,
ll.uuam running after him , yelling ,
"Shoot the beggar ! Fult , shoot him I
I'll treat these tramps a lenaon. "
The doctor looked from Murphy to
: ho running men in amazement
Murphy , nearly stunned with the tor-
rilio turn of atUirs , gasped out , "Stop
"em ! doctor , stem 'oml
Then thu doctor and Murphy started -
od down and overtook Horry and Bad-
lam just as the former raised the ritlo
to aim at the distant fisherman ,
silently whipping the placid carp
pond. "For heaven's sake , t top this
! " tlio doctor ctiou
nonsense . . , grasping
* *
the rillo.
"Don't you interfere , sir , " fiercely
yelled Badlam to the apparently hur *
ror stricken doctor. "Shoot the beggar -
gar , Fult * give him one in the head
for '
luck.
"flood Lord , Alex. , what are you
tbout ? " exclaimed Murphy , white and
frightened ,
"Lot mo give it to the rascal ! "
Derry exclaimed , breaking away from
Iho doctor. Ho raised the rillo , fired ,
the ball crashed through the fisher
man's head , making a lot of straw and
dust tly , the polo switched up , the
line dangled a second in the air , and
the lone fisherman again tossed the
liook carefully out upon the water.
Murphy looked upon his three con-
vulted companions , and then with
desperate calmness tried to borrow the
gun.
gun."I didn't know whether Joe wanted
to commit suicide or murder Alox. , "
Berry savH , "so I didn't let him have
