The people of Holt county feel ju-
bilnut over the prospects of the
crops. The county is settling up fast ,
and mostly of good and experienced
farmers from the middle states , A
great many are going into stock rail-
ing. A largo amount of young stock
has been brought to this part of Ne
braska , where there are excellent op-
portunios tor this business.
The alUirs of government tire the
most Important and prolific source of
discussion with most of the people ,
and will bo till after the fall election
and why should it not bo ? Everyone -
one should take n great interest in
affairs of state. It is a matter that
demands everyone's co-operation , ns
the present campaign is an important
one tojNobraska. This will bo n now
deal for Nebraska , and it is important
thnt wo start rifiht. The most essen
tial feature of the coming elec
tion is the question of congress
man. Does northern Nebraska ,
the Third congressional dis
trict , want Valentine , who has
represented the whole state for tnro
wliolo terms and part of another. The
very fact ot Valentino having served
the state so long should be n reason
why the Third district now should re
ject him for re-election. Is there not
a bare possibility that Valentino's con
stituency in the two southern dis
tricts would got as much from him as
the Third district ? Each of the
southern districts will elect a man who
will represent their respective dis
tricts , and not bo so directly , under
obligations to the whole state. Does
this largo and rapidly improving
northern district want a man who has
represented all thcso sections ? I think-
not , but a man who will represent
this district first and the state at largo
next. Valentino would bo the lust
man to represent a single district ns
the state is now divided. One of his
chief aims since his first election has
been to impress upon the people the
importance of returning congressmen.
Does this mean himself ? Val. has too
many cunningly divised forces all
over the district in working order ,
lie has control of the postolliccs ; a
contract that these oflicos will do their
best to secure his election. It would
bo no worse if ho had bribed each
with the amount of the income of
thcso ofliccs to do work for him.
With the great majority this ia the
case. In many instances ho has had
removed good and competent men
men whom the people and patrons of
such ofllces were entirely satisfied
with , and others put in their places
that were obnoxious to the great
maiority.
Ho has made room for editors when
possible ( by the way Val. was a prin
ter once ) who would , through their
papers , work on the minds ot popple
in his behalf , quote the little sayings
of throe or four other papers through
out the state in Val'a favor , and oc
casionally say some little thing him
self for the other papers to copy , and
thus keep the ball rolling in the little
ring , working in this way on the
people. If there are not editors
enough for every office , ho takes up
with some one who will throw awuy
all independence of character , and
for consideration of the ollico will do
his beat for Valentine , regardless of
all other inteiests. Four cases in
Holt county will illustrate how'Our
Vul. " manipulates.
Mr. Mathowo , of The Frontier , by
claiming great instrumentality in the
success of the ropulican party last fall ,
but which the people know
to bo false , and that ho positively
injured the party and lessoned its
majorities in many cases and helped
in none , promised Valentino that if
ho ( Val ) would give Mathews the
O'Neill postollico ho would bring vho
delegation from Holt county and un
organized territory next fa'l ' for Val
entino a clear bargain and sale. So
Mathews assumes to carry Holt
county in his vest pocket j to lend the
people around like puppets. It also
shows what kind of "one of the
boys" "our Val. " is , to take such a
promise. Well , Mathews got the
ollico on this contract for piping for
Val. through his paper. Before ho
got his commission a remonstrance
was signed by moro than nineteen
twentieths or the patrons of 'the
oflico. In fact , he was the most un
popular in nil at homo and in his pro-
: inct , but Val , had the promise , and
Lho little paper for outside inlluenro.
A delegation of two men accom
panied the remonstrance to Washington -
ington , Val. said it must stand
as ho ordered , but admitted
that ho "thought ho had made a mistake -
take , " etc. The senators and Mr ,
Hatton , first assistant postmaster general -
oral , assured the delegation "that so
Far as they wore concerned , Mr.
Mathewa * commission would not is
sue ; " that "they did not put in such
men , " etc. Jiut Valentino soon after
carne round and ordered Mr. Hatton
( who , by the way , is also a printer and
u friend of Valentino ) , to issue the

people and patrons of the O'Neill

party for the latter , according to the
vote cast last fall in this precinct _ for
county ollicors , to say nothing of the
stuto ticket , four out of every five
signed the remonstrance against
Malhows , The democrats , of which
this precinct and patrons of the
O'Neill postoifice , are a largo majority
of all voters , moro than U7 per cent
signed it , Hay this lao Imposition
on the people ? It is tyranny of the
worst form.
Soon after this , Valentino , thinking
the people would acquieso and rally
around the "top dog , " in order to
mnko Mnthows ns prominent as poasi
bio , appointed him "overseer" of Hell
county postofllces. Mr. Mathowg was
ordered to Stuart to select a mnn fein
n now posliUaator. Mr , Alathowt
chose Mr. llnllock , and his immo wet
sent in , and in duo time Ins appoint
ment came. A romonatr.itico was
signed by moro than a score to one.

Valentino and all his supporters
should sneak off for shame into some

gross violation of the spirit and prin

I think there was misrepresentation

What bettor can be cxpeclo. ? A re
publican in Illinois , a democrat in
Wisconsin , independent and after
wards a pretended republican in Ne

men as Mathowa , Smith. Graves and

was judge , Mr. Barnes was city at
