[ Cincinnati Star. A FAITHLESS W1KE. Sad Story of n Young Wife's Deser tion of Ilor Husband , nnd Children -Sho Prefers tuo Society of n Dirty Tramp to That of R Loving HUB- band. Specl.l Dispatch to the Chicago Trlliuns. EIXIIN , ID. , Juno 10. Richard Prescott , n farmer living north of this city , was hero to-day searching fur his wife , and the otnry of her riicappcar- anco in a sad and withal strange one of woman's infatuation for n most un worthy object. Ton years ago , at Wayne , Du Page county , ho wooed and won Emily Miller , a handsome girl of 17 , nnd the daughter ot a most respectable farmer. IIo was then 30. They lived happily together near that place , and within tire miles of this city , until a year ago , six children blessing their union , five of whom are now living. Eighteen months ago , when ho was hard pressed for help , n hard-looking young tramp drifted to his farm. The stranger , whoso ntimo is Charles Lay man , was a boy of 22 or 23 , ragged , filthy , and ill-favored. Although ho was lazy and dissolute , ho managed to retain his place until a year ago , when Mr. Prcscott leased of P. 0. Gilbert , of this city , n valtiablo farm situated at Gonon , Do Kalb county. Then his mployor discharged him , but ho boldly refused to leave. To increase Mr. 1'roacott'a astonishment , his wife also refused to allow1 the follow to depart - part , saying she liked him. Eoforo this time no doubt of his wife's integ rity had entered Prcscott's mind , and the matter staggered him. Ho told the woman that Layman nnd ho could not both remain , nnd her answer waste to bid her husband to bo the ono to go. Ho came to this city , and the tramp for n brief season lived in style with his mistress on his emplojor'n hard earned money. Dissipating what was available , Lay man in less than two months loft for parts unknown. Then the faithless wife came hero to persuade the injured husband to forgive her and return. For his children's oake , ho , on her protestations of penitence and reform , at last consented. For a time all again was serene. Two weeks ago PrcBcott heard the tramp was again in the neighborhood , but was uut ublo to see him , although ho had reason to think ho had boon at his farm during his absence on two or three occasions at Sycamoro. This , however , the woman stoutly denied. Last evening when ho retired his wife stated she had some sowing to do which would keep her up late. Ho foil asleep , and whan ho awoke she was missing. Inquiry at the Genoa depot to-day developed the fuct that she took the early morning train for Chicago with her paramour. With her aho took her youngest child , a babe in arms , leaving four little ones , the oldest under eight , behind. Ho followed them , and , thinking the guilty pair might have loft the train hero , ho stopped , but found ho trace. They are doubtlosa in Chicago. Prcacott is an honest-looking.am qultu ( food-looking EuKlialimatt o. tarty. When fie told his story ho wept like n child. The woman ia moro than ordinarily gifted with goo ( ] looks , and before the advent of Lay man bore a spotless roputttion. Her relatives are highly rcspcctablu people. The tramp has all the repulsive traits of that order of beings. Tbo London Lancet. There is no need to jump to the conclusion , aa BO many people did when the reports of Mr. Edison's in ventions first k came from , America , that gas ia a thing of the past and that electricity haa already won the battle. No doubt electricity is gaining upon its rival , but that all electric lights are bettor than all gas lights is a proposi tion that is easily disproved by anyone ono who takes a walk at night down Holborn and across the viaduct. The city authorities , who , whatever their faults , are ready enough to make ex periments for the public service , are trying the Edison incandescent burn ers on the viaduct and the Siemens improved gas in Holborti. Wo do not know anything of the relative cost of the two systems , but as far as the light is concerned there is simply no comparison. The gas triumphs all along the line , There are other reasons which should make prudent people hesitate before investing in any of the multitudinous electrical companies with which the countries ia now being Hooded for example , there is the question of patents , and the extreme difliculty of deciding whether ono system if not an infringement or another. There is , again , the question , which only time can decide , of which system or sys tems are really the best. Still time will decide these points , and though many an unhappy investor may suffer the public will benefit. For there are no two opinions about the desirability of finding some substitute for the foul ; as which we uro at present condemn ed to burn in our houses and build ings. It nifty bo that under the spur of competition the chemical advisors of the gas companies will discover some way of making the gas they sup- ly less trying to the brain and eye , loss ruinous to .our books , our ceil- lings , our wall papore , and whatever else comes in con. tact with its iumcs. Till that is done , or till electricity has come in to lielp us , many of us have returned to thu candles aud oil lamps of our an cestors in sheer despair. At present , too , an evening in a theater or con cert-room ia an evening of ponanuo ; for in all the London theatres but two Dr three there is no adequate ventila tion , so that the combination of gas- lamps and crowds make the atmoa- phi-ro' intolerable. Wo can not lope that managers and archi- : ecU will over master the theory of ventilation , but wo now hope for an alleviation of our sufferings when the electric light is generally adopted. The ono London theatre which al present possesses it is a striking anc welcome exception to the general role which demands that a place of ntnuso- ment should bo like the Grotto del Oano at Naples , or like the channo tunnel when Dr. Siomen's proposed scheme of carbonic acid is in opera tion a place whore neither man nor animal can broatho. Mr. J. Marsh , Bank of Toronto , Ont. , writes ! "Bllllousness nnd dyspepsia eeem to have i-rown up with me ; hiving been a sufferer fnr years.
