Some Account of tbo System Em- ployod-Dimcultlea Which Have Boon Overcome Tbo Experiment "About to Have u Fair Trial. Kcw York Evening Tost. The project of furnishing Now Yorkers with steam heat urid power from central stations , just as gas Is furnished from the gas woiks , will soon bo practically tested by two com- panics , b'oth of which are now engaged in tearing up the streets in half a dozen places down town. The plaas and methods of the Now York steam company have already been described in full in The Evening Post , the sys tem being a modification of that used in Lockport , Milwaukee , Lynn , and other places , and known us the Holly system. The pipes are incased in wooden tubs , coated with tar , and the process of laying them under ground may bo seen at present , in all its stages , in' Wall street , between Broad way and Nassau street. The company beaan to furnish steam to customers bout five weeks ago , and intends to extent ! tno UUSlUeai aa 1Mb aa tuu pipes are laid. A visit to Smith McNeil's restau rant showed the stonm from the Now York company's station in Greenwich street doing its work to the tntiafno- tion of the engineer , who said that the only defects were matters of detail - tail , which would bo overcome in a few days , the pressure being more than the machinery and joints had been accustomed to. The boilers were idle and the furnace grains empty. The steam wns running the engines for the dynamos which sup ply the olcctrio li ht , for the elevators , fane , nnd pumps. In the kitchen thu sime steam was seen boiling soup and roasting ribs of beef in a steam jacket. At the Metropolitan job printing office , No , 38 Vesoy street , n quarter of a mile awny from the boiler house , the forty-horso power engine was found womnti Ml the prcWs of the largo establishment by means of the New York company's steam. Iho engineer's occupation is half cone , ns there no more anxiety nbuut pressure in Iho boilers , nodangerof explosions , no fires to look after , nnd no coal to handle. In both Uicao places thu room nt pretont taken up by coal- vaults nnd boilers will bo valuable for other purposes. The station in Greenwich street has room for sixty- four boilers , and can produce 10,000- horse power , necessitating a consump tion of about 500 tons of conl n day. The American Heating & Power Company is also vigorously nt work , having begun to lay mains last au tumn. Its objects are the same ns these of the Now York Steam Com pany , but the system is n wholly dif- forpnt ono. The ofllcorn nnd directors of the company are : J Lawrence Lee , President ; D. W. Morgan , Treasurer j R , H. Bull , Engineer ; Gun. Newton , Consulting Engineer ; William E. Dodge , Robert B. Minium , W. D. Morgan , Gen. John Newton , C. 0. Baldwin , Alexander Hamilton , J. Liwrence Leo , U , B , Tremor , 0. 0. Dodge , Johnston Livingston , James I. Coleman , nnd C. B. Hoffman. At the present the comoany has laid about half a nulo of pipe , distri buted in John , Pine , Cedir , Liberty , und Wall streets , Muidun Lane and Broadway. Work is now going on in Wall street at the corner of William street , and in Gold street near the builder-houses. About the middle of next August the company expect to bejin distributing steam through moro than n mile of pipe. The total steam- producing power of ( lit- boilers in the Gold struct building , which is 125 feet wide by 100 feet dee1 ] , will bo about 10,000 horse power. The system to bo used is nn inven tion of Gen. Newton , who wont to Lock port ; some years 11150 to study the Holly system , and found that a sys tem which was theoretically porfuot seemed to fail in practice there. The reason for the failure was , according to Gen. Newton , a too rapid condensa tion in the pipns. A reduction of pressure or tumpcraturo will cause steam to condense. A proper insulat ing material if , therefore , of most im portance ; and in that respect also the Holly system disappointed Gon. Now ton. The problem to be solved was , how to carry steam through miles of pipe without cooling it to the con- , dousing point , and how to devise amore moro perfect insulation. Instead of passing steam directly from the boilers to the mains , Gen. Newton passes it through a gigantic heating drum , in creasing its temperature lo a degree which will enable it t ) circulate through miles of pipe without con densation. At the same tiino that the' ' steam is thus superheated it in dried and thus improved for purposes of wotking machinery. To illubtrato Gen. Newton's theory , suppose that steam issuing ; from the boiler comes out at a presBuro of seventy pounds und a temperature of 3'2a degrees. If the mains did not extend more than a few hundred foot , such steam would serve all purposes , but long mains will lead to the lowering of the pressure. By superheating the steam far beyond the condensing point a margin is obtained , Gen. Newton believes , which will allow steam to bo carried for miles without trouble , pro vided the insulation is comparatively perfect. Gon. Newton believes that he has discovered this perfect insulat ing material in lampblack , which is found to bo a protection against water and n poor conductor of heat. An experimental piece of trench was filled with water , which was allowed to stand for weeks , at the end of which time the water was drawn off and the lampblack found to bo perfectly dry ; it seemed to repel moisture. The use of lampblack hog been so great for this purpose that tbo company has had to establish a lampblack factory of its own. If water filteio down upon any steam pipe owmt ; to imperfections in the insulating material , the result is to almost put an end to the working of the system. The average pressure of steam in the street mains will bo about seventy pounds , but the service boxes at the entrance of each house will enable the company to regulate the pressure of steam in the homo pipes according to the purposes lor which it is to bo used , The advantage which the American Heating & Power company claim for their system is , first , ilmt tbo saving in nil but very largo buildings , such as the Equitable or Mills buildings , will bo fully one-quarter in the cost of coal and wages of firemen ; second , that the absence of fires will nialo- riully reduce the insurance premiums ; third , that the space formerly irivou up to boilers and coal-v > ults will bo sayod for other purposes In the up towns dwelling districts , where it is proposed to establish a plant us soon .13 the downtown district is in work ing order , the ndvantacos to house- kojpors will , it is claimed , make the steam an absolute necessity , while its cost will bo less than that of coal. A steam range has been manufactured by which cooking ) baking , and roast ing can bo douo a ? perfectly as with a coal fire It requires just three min utes for * ho range to bo at a cooking lioat after the steam is turned on. In apartment houses , in which the coal ind wood question is a serious ono , both because of the trouble of get ting supplies from the collar every day , and because of the notion that the janitor is accustomed to stock a coal-yard with the material abstracted by mistake from his tenants' birs the steam will bo invaluable. By October , at tlio latest , both of the steam companies will be supplying a large number of buildings , and it will then be possible to judge of the value of the system , jsecnesaa . The young man in Connecticut who wont to see his girl , and stayed BO late that ho discovered some tramps at tempting to wreck a train on u rail road bridge , is pronounced a shame less fraud. The story was invented by himself in the hopes of earning promotion , notoriety and a reward , instead of being a noble and virtuous young man , an honor to his state and a credit to the railroad , hn is now discovered to bo a bad boy with some of his family in the state prison. Iio was put in charge of the railroad station , in hopes of reforming him. The contusion on his chuok , caused by the alleged stouo which was thrown nt him , is pro nounced a mere discoloration , which might have boon produsedby tho'rub- btng of sand upon u ; ho was not wounded in the wrist , as lie said ; and the ductor did not remove a bullet from it , as the young man alleged that ho did , because there was no bullet there , and only a alight perforation in his co.it sleeve. His bogus heroism seems to bo con tagious and prevalent in Connecticut ; fur a niuht or two after a watchman on another road came to the front as guardian of the sleeping passengers , a train of wnoin ho stopped in order to have Bomo obstructing ties removed. The peril attending thisdofonsoof lifu and property consisted of un alleged stab inflicted u.ou the sham cham pion's body , afterward found to bo imaginary. lie was taken Into cus tody and subsequently discharged ; but unless vigorous measures are taken with these fraudulent ward ens and tutelary railroad saints , they will bring the uholo night transporta tion of the Connecticut railroads to u dead stop , It is besides a wet blanket to romance , and will maid people pause when th < y read ol daring deeds done by plucky engineers and courageous switchmen.
