About thirty ictail rocora of this
city , mot at Gladstonu'd grocery etoro ,
on Douglan etroot las1 evening , for the
purpoao of organizing a Ilotail Gro
cers' association. E. E. French was
elected ohairman and J. I Niohol sec
retary.
Mr. Glndalono stated that ono of
the objects of the meeting was to
tnko steps to atop wholesale dcalera
and commission morchnnta from sell
ing direct to hotels. This could le
d > no by agreeing not to purchase any
gooda from any wholecalo dealer cr
commission mo reliant who does busi
ness in that way.
Mr. Robert Easson , representing
the wholesale house of Pnxton &
Gallagher , introduced the following
risolutinn :
Jiewlrej , That wo , the retail gro *
curs uf Omaha , will not purch&so any
gooda from any wholesale dealers or
uotumissiou men who sell to any one
not in the grocery trade. Tliia in *
eludes the tradu of the atato as wollns
of the city of Omaha.
This resolution wus carried.
In behalf of Paxtou & Gallagher ,
Mr. Esaon oaid that the would guar
antee that his firm would nbido by the
resolution and ho said that ho thought
every other wholesale house would do
it , as the wholesalers wanted the
trade of the retailers of this city. He
also thought the commission men
would follow suit.
Some discussion followed , after
which it was moved and carried that
a committee of , seven bo appointed to
wait upwn the wholesale men and com *
nmion merchants and inform them ol
the action of this meeting.
Tbo chair appointed the following
committee : MoShane , Dorman , Gen *
leman , McYittio , Spetman and Glad
stone.
Mr. Easson thought the retailers
ought to protect themselves in othei
wavs. Ho referred to the habit ol
cutting prices in certain goods and
under ceitiin circumstances. Ho
suggested that some ono man ought
to have the power vested in him tc
say what certain gooda shall bo sold
for on a certain day , the idea being to
sell goods at u ui.iform rate.
Mr. Niohol thought that the retailers
tailors should form a protective union.
T. A. McShuno moved that the
temporary organization bo made per
manent.
Mr. Gladstone thought the matter
should bo postponed until all the gro
cers wore prreont.
Mr. McShano's motion was carried.
Mr. Easton mored that the nimo
of the organization bo "Tho Retail
Grocers' Frotectivo Association. "
Mr. French suggested that a com
mittee be appointed to draw up a con
stitution and by-lawa.
Mr. McShane ouggcated that there
be an initiation fee to pay expense of
hall , etc ,
On motion the chair appointed
Messrs. Sander , Madien and Ilolin to
make arrangements for securing a
place for meetings.
Mr. Kasaon tuggoated that the mat
ter of credits bo taken up , and that
grocers report to each other the stand
ing of customers who obtain credit
from place to place. The object is to
put a chock on dcadbeats ,
Mr. McSlmno snid that Mr. Yatca
had u plan that might work , and that
wan to have a forfeit of $25 on the
part of any grocer who trusts a man
who has l > uen rut used credit else
where , if the grocer is aware of the
fact , The forleit to go to help pay
the bill at the previoua place.
Mr. McShanu said it had cost him
82,000 to learn the dead beats of
Omaha.
Mr. Fleming said that a man aught
to do business as he pleases , and
when it came to the credit question
ho wanted to have u full expression of
opinion.
